No. 25 Aggie volleyball sweeps No. 19 Kentucky, 3-0, retains SEC lead
In the immortal words of Jerry Reed, "When you're hot, you're hot."
His words certainly rang true for the Texas A&M volleyball team on Wednesday. In front of one of the season's largest crowds at Reed Arena, the No. 25 Aggies swept the No. 19 Kentucky Wildcats, 3-0, to extend their winning streak to eleven matches.
The Aggies and Wildcats traded points for much of the first set, but Kentucky (18-9, 11-4 SEC) opened up a six point lead during the home stretch. Down 18-12, Texas A&M (20-6, 13-2 SEC) became the beneficiary of a bevy of Wildcat errors, closing the gap and eventually tying the set at 23.
As she has often done during the Aggies' winning streak, Ashlie Reasor put the set away. Sending two kills into the backcourt, the sophomore from San Antonio iced a thrilling comeback and gave her team a ton of momentum going into the second frame.
"It shows that this team is never going to give up," Reasor said of comeback. "This team will not give up at all. It shows the team's maturity."
Kentucky went up early in the second set, reeling off six straight points to take a 7-2 lead. As was the case in the first set, the Aggies weren't going down easy.
A couple more kills from Reasor spurred a quick comeback for the home team. With a 14-10 lead in hand, Texas A&M traded points with the Wildcats, pulling away at the end and taking the set, 25-19.
The third frame followed a similar script. Kentucky raced out to a 7-2 lead, but the girls in maroon and white fought back. The comeback took a little longer to roll in than in the first two sets, but the Aggies ultimately tied it up at 19.
For the next few points, the Aggies and Wildcats traded blows. Kiara McGee sent a kill into the midst of the Wildcat defense with the score knotted at 25, giving the Aggies the opportunity to close things out. One Kentucky error later, Texas A&M had won its 21st set in a row at Reed Arena.
For most of the season, Head Coach Laurie Corbelli has been impressed with her team's ability to finish. Wednesday was no different.
"I think more than anything, (this match) was just another testament to this team's resiliency," she said. "They're able to keep their composure even when they're down five, six, seven points, and that is a quality that coaches really appreciate."
There won't be much rest for the red-hot Aggies. They'll take on No. 14 Florida in another pivotal SEC match-up on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Reed Arena.
