Aggie volleyball throttles Georgia, 3-0, runs winning streak to eight
To be a good team in any sport, you have to do at least two things. You have to beat the weak teams on your schedule, and you have to win at home. To this point in the year, the Aggie volleyball team has done just that.
With a sweep over the league-worst Georgia Bulldogs on Sunday, Texas A&M improved its home record to 10-1 and gained a share of the SEC lead.
As expected, the red-hot Aggies jumped all over the Bulldogs from the first serve. Behind an early push from Kiara McGee and a couple aces by senior Katelyn Labhart, Texas A&M raced out to a 10-5 lead and didn't look back.
The Ags hit an impressive .609 in the first set and held the Dawgs to a dismal .000, putting on a full-court press in a 25-11 victory.
The second set was similar to the first in all aspects but one: the players. Though Texas A&M was able to put together a strong second frame and win 25-11 once again, Head Coach Laurie Corbelli had the luxury of emptying the bench and getting some little-used Ags some playing time.
"It always feels good for the team and the teammates to see their teammates get to compete as a reward for their hard work all week," she said. "That's a nice benefit of a match like this."
All in all, fifteen girls got on the floor for the Maroon and White, and the Aggies till managed to post a .458 hitting percentage while driving home fifteen kills in the second set.
Texas A&M posted an early lead in the third set, but struggled to finish, letting the Bulldogs see a small glimmer of hope for a stretch. After running out to a 19-13 lead, the Aggies lost six of the next eight points before Corbelli called a timeout.
Whatever she told her team, it worked. The Ags didn't drop a point the rest of the way, capping off the sweep with a 25-19 third set victory. With the win, Texas A&M ran it's winning streak to eight matches and improved to 17-6 overall and 10-2 in SEC play.
The Ags will go on the road next week, taking trips to Ole Miss and Mississippi State before coming back to College Station for the final home matches of the regular season. Corbelli is ready for the season's home stretch.
"Ole Miss and Mississippi State are already on my mind," she said. "This team is very self-driven. The want to win, and they want to work to win. I have every bit of confidence and faith that they'll give it their best effort the rest of the way."
