A defeat of a top-25 team and a 2-0 start in SEC play is a solid place to begin.

Naturally, we're talking about Texas A&M, which defeated No. 21 Mississippi State, 30-17, at Kyle Field on Saturday to run its record to 5-0 and stay unblemished in conference play. In accordance, the Aggies made the jump from No. 14 to No. 9 in the newest Associated Press poll.

In the process, they completed a five-week rise from unranked into the national top 10.

A&M also landed at 11 in the Coaches Poll. It previously was ranked No. 15.

Following a week in which the previous No. 3, 6, 7 and 8 teams all lost, the SEC placed six teams in the AP Poll overall — and three in the top 10.

Kevin Sumlin's Ags will next enjoy the sweet satisfaction of a bye week before welcoming Alabama — which whupped Georgia to ascend to Nos. 8 and 10 in the respective polls — to College Station.

The first College Football Playoff rankings will be released on November 3.
