Jackie Sherrill shares his thoughts on ASU win, Chavis' defense

Key quotes from Jackie Sherrill interview

“When you look at the team, especially the defense, you were very, very pleased.  We’ve always said A&M has athletes, but what John Chavis has done is turned them loose.  Myles Garrett looked like a man playing with kids. They started single blocking him and then they moved the line protection wise to his side, which would put the guard and tackle on him. When that happened, all of a sudden Chavis puts him inside to defensive tackle where he would still be one-on-one.  And then, they started putting three on him, the tackle, guard and running back. By doing that, when people move the line toward Myles, it leaves the other side – Daeshon Hall – one-on-one and puts that tackle on an island.  Everyone is sliding left and he’s on the island by himself and he ended up with four sacks.

If you always go back and analyze Chavis’ defenses scheme, your safeties are going to be your number one tacklers.  Armani Watts is a really talented player and he showed up Saturday with ten tackles.  What’s really impressive to me was the play of Daylon Mack. He played a lot better then what he has been practicing.  Which means, when he turns his motor up, it’s awful hard to block him.  He’s got tons of talent.  He got hung up two or three times, he just doesn’t have enough knowledge yet on how to use his hands.  But, when he gets techniques and fundamentals down, that’s a big plus inside for the defense.”

“Mack is quick.  That first tackle, that guard didn’t even know he was there.  I mean, he was so fast.  What I like is how he chases the football.  Now you got to think about putting two on him and that means with Hall and Garrett that somebody is going to be single blocked.”

“You don’t have a choice when it comes to combating the A&M front.  Everything has got to be quick, you got to get the ball out of your hand with the quarterback throwing in three steps.  You’re not going to go back five steps and read.  You’re going to have to run a lot of draws, a lot of screens because that’s the only way you can offset that.  The difference this year is that they are not making Garrett line up in front of somebody, people are having to move to him just like the offensive tackle.  He didn’t have a chance because if you try to turn out to try and block Myles—you’re in trouble.  The only way you’re going to have a chance is backing straight up to the quarterback and cutting the angle down, or you don’t have a chance.  There are very few offensive tackles out there that has that ability, those guys are playing on Sunday.  So, those two guys, Hall and Garrett will end up being the Sack Brothers of 2015. The last time A&M had a duo like this is all the way back to [John] Roper and [Aaron] Wallace. These two ends are really going to wreck havoc with everybody they play.”

"I was pleased certainly with Brandon Williams, because the corners, all they have to do is latch on.  So, for the first five steps they got hold of their receiver and so the ball has got to get out of their hands.  It’s not like they can run down field and do a deep comeback or run down field and do a corner because the ball has to get out of the quarterback's hand real quick.”

“Offensively, the receivers stood out.  When you look at the receivers, you look at Josh Reynolds, and to me he’s a big time player.  He doesn’t get the recognition that he deserves, but Josh Reynolds really is a solid, good player and a deep threat.  But then all of a sudden, here comes Christian Kirk and you’re putting Speedy Noil on the back burner.  Six months ago, if people thought Speedy Noil would be on the back burner when you looked at the receivers, people wouldn’t believe that.  Right now in the receiving corps, they have to have as good as or better than anybody in the country.  Then you throw in Ricky Seals-Jones, so you got the big inside target receiver.  You know, Kyle (Allen) did not play the first half very well and there’s no getting around it.  The broadcast said he was pressing instead of playing and I think with Kyler coming in the game and Kyler doing some things and Kyle coming back in, he stopped pressing.  He looked very solid and very good the last half of the game.”

"With the quarterbacks, they both realize that they’re going to play and certainly they both want to start.  Both of them want to play, but as a team there’s a place for both of them.  The challenge is for Spavital to come up with a package for both of them.  There are very few guys in the country that have Kyler’s talent, to be able to run like he can, his quickness.  He had one bad throw and the other one – he misread the safety.  Football never changes, if they’re playing zone, you have to have more people in that zone.  It they have two, you have to have three, if they have three, you got to have four.  You have to find the single receiver and if they’re playing man then you go to the receiver that has the mismatch. That is never going to change."
