Kyle Allen named Texas A&M's starter vs. Arizona State

Kevin Sumlin and Texas A&M made it official on Monday by announcing on Twitter that sophomore QB Kyle Allen will get the starting nod in the opener vs. Arizona State in Houston:


Allen was named starter over incoming freshman Kyler Murray and sophomore Jake Hubenak. Allen started five games for A&M in 2014, going 3-2 in that span with wins over ULM, Auburn and West Virginia. He was named the Offensive MVP in the Liberty Bowl, and finished the season with a completion percentage of 61.5%, 17 total touchdowns and seven interceptions.

So finishing the year last year as the starter and winning MVP in the bowl game doesn't make him deserving to be the starter? Competition is good for everyone and it will be fun to watch as it continues the rest of the season.

No it does not. Best player plays no matter what happened last year, or that should be the case if winning is the highest priority.

Sawemoff, reading comprehension please. My post did not ask for confirmation that Allen was named starter, just what evidence from practice indicates that he "deserves" to start. Show me the glowing practice reports (and int's and fumbles don't count as glowing obviously) that show that Allen our performed Murray in practice. That's all.

We shall see company man. I don't like quarterbacks with a long throwing motion either. Sumlin might just be reluctant to start a true fish first game.

Been saying this since fall camp started. Kyle Allen is a great qb and will lead this team to a lot of wins.

The Kyler fans hate to hear it, for some reason. Not sure why.

Kyler will get his chance if he's man enough to take his time and learn the system. In fact, he will be a Heisman candidate if he has the patience.

If it's up to all his fan boys though, be will transfer before the end of the season. Which is a shame, he could do great things here.

Hope he has some patience.

Sumlin's answer in the presser was a lot of stammering with uh and you know, finally followed by it is an evaluation over couple weeks. Embarrassing to listen to. The job shouldn't be given based on tenure, and I don't think Sumlin would do that, but I'm not sure. He may be taking the "safe" course. Easier to bring Kyler in than to bench Allen and then bring him back. I just hope it's not so safe as to get in a hole we can't quite climb out of. I have nothing against Allen but I have never liked his long slow throwing motion. It can make the difference between a pick or completion, or even getting the ball out at all. My job has always been to be real. Some can't deal with real.

Have any of you over zealous, Kyler fans ever thought that maybe just maybe Allen has looked more like the starter this offseason?

Also, what proof do you have that Kyler deserves to be the starter?
