Key quotes from Mike Evans interview

“(The Mike Evans Youth Football Camp) is my first camp. We thought that this would be a good place to do my first camp in between my home town and College Station. I love giving back to kids. I’m just looking for the kids to have a good time, and I’m just teaching some things along the way. Most importantly, we’ll just have fun.”

“(Randy Moss) was one of my favorite receivers growing up. (Meeting him) was such a blessing. That’s what’s cool about this game. You make it to a level, and your favorite athletes are starting to learn your name. That’s been great throughout this whole process. He’s one of the realest dudes that I’ve met so far in this process. He kept it real with me and gave me a lot of tips. He told me a lot of stories about him in the league and how he was able to dominate, so I was up there for a week with him, and I’m going back soon. It’s great learning and getting knowledge from one of the best.”

“Assuming (Jameis Winson) is the starter (in Tampa Bay) – he’s the number one pick. He’s been looking great in practice. If he is the starter, I think he’ll do well. I’m excited. I like his game a lot. As for the comparison between him and (Johnny) Manziel, I don’t know about that. They’re both great players, so that’s the comparison. Manziel’s more of a dynamic athlete – get outside the pocket, keep his eyes downfield and make crazy plays. Jameis Winston is more like a Peyton Manning or something. He’ll sit in the pocket and deliver the rock, deliver strikes. They’re both great players.”

“(I’m working on) the little, nagging injuries. I just want to be more flexible. I want to be a better route-runner, of course. I thought I did well last year, and I know how defenses and cornerbacks are going to play now, so I should be much better this year when it comes to route running. I want to be more flexible. That’ll take away all the little strains and stuff like that.”

“My most memorable catch or touchdown (while I was at A&M) was at Ole Miss in 2012 when Manziel won the Heisman and we won the Cotton Bowl. That was a historic year, and I made a catch – it was third-and-nineteen, I believe, late in the fourth quarter. Manziel threw me a jump ball. I caught it over the Ole Miss corner. That kept our drive alive. We scored and eventually ended up winning. That kept our season alive right there.”

“I think we were one of the best teams. We were a couple of points off of a national championship. It was tough. We had some unfortunate breaks, but that was a great season. It put A&M back on the map, back on that high level with the top contenders in the country, as we should be. We’ve got all the talent, a great coaching staff, the greatest fans, so we deserve to be mentioned as one of the greatest teams of the past five years. I’m happy that we got to do that at A&M.”

“I like all of our receivers, but I think Speedy Noil – even though he did well last year – he’ll improve greatly this year. I think they’ll have a great year. They’re one of the best receiving corps in the country, in my opinion. That’s not biased at all.”

“The most memorable touchdown (of my rookie year) was probably my first one against the Pittsburgh Steelers. They’re a great team, and we beat them, so that was great. I thought I had a decent year. I could have done better. From the outside looking in, everybody thinks it was a great year. I thought it was OK. I left some plays out there. I’m just excited for this year, because it should be much better.”

“I’m ready to get back to the kids. I’m having my camp in between Galveston, my home town, and College Station. Most of the people from that community, hopefully, can come out. I’m just looking to have a good time. I love children. I hope this can change some kid’s life. When I was younger, I went to a camp – Casey Hampton, a guy that played in the league for a long time, did camps in Galveston. That kind of changed my life a little bit, just by him being there and seeing how successful he was, so why not me? Why couldn’t I do it? I hope I can change somebody’s life and just bring joy to the kids.”

“I miss a lot of things (about College Station). I miss the restaurants. I miss just miss the fans, really. Those are the best fans in the country – I think – at any level, so far as I’ve seen. It’s crazy how supportive they are. The tradition; that’s what I miss.”
