Football Recruiting: 2017 San Antonio Reagan QB Kellen Mond

On Tuesday evening the top 2017 quarterback was headed back to San Antonio from Aggieland with an offer from Texas A&M in hand.

Earlier that morning, he didn't even know if he would make the visit.

Mond made a last-minute decision to trek to College Station to work out for Kevin Sumlin and Jake Spavital, and by the end of the day he was glad that he did.

"I was debating on whether or not to go today, but we decided to go on short notice and I'm really thrilled that we decided to go," Mond said. "It was amazing to be offered by them. I know Coach Sumlin and Coach Spav have had great success with quarterbacks everywhere they've been. Coach Spav is one of the best offensive minds in college football.

"I definitely wouldn't mind playing for Texas A&M."

Mond worked out for Clemson and Auburn over the weekend and picked up offers from both schools just as he did at A&M on Tuesday. The Aggie staff had some high praise for him after seeing him work in person.

I know I'll probably redshirt my first year depending on what quarterbacks they have on campus, but I would like to play my redshirt freshman year. I'm planning on graduating early and getting in to learn the offense as quickly as I can. {"Module":"quote","Alignment":"left","Quote":"I know I\u0027ll probably redshirt my first year depending on what quarterbacks they have on campus, but I would like to play my redshirt freshman year. "Coach Sumlin was really glad that I came down and got to see me in person," Mond said. "He had seen my highlight tape and told me I was good, but thought that I was even more impressive to him in person."

Mond has seen his stock soar over the spring with offers from Baylor, TCU, A&M, Clemson, Auburn and others, but he's in no rush to make a decision. He's taking a wait-and-see approach and keeping an eye on the class of quarterbacks ahead of him.

"I don't plan on making any commitment until next year sometime around Signing Day," said Mond. "I want to see where some of the 2016 quarterbacks commit, and that's around the time I'll make my decision.

"I know I'll probably redshirt my first year depending on what quarterbacks they have on campus, but I would like to play my redshirt freshman year. I'm planning on graduating early and getting in to learn the offense as quickly as I can. I think it would be good to redshirt and learn the offense better because you are going against elite teams every week if you're in a major conference."

Mond has no problem noting that the depth chart will play a big factor in his decision, but it's not the only thing he's looking for from the eventual college of his choice.

"The depth chart is big because I want to go somewhere I can play as early as I can," he said. "After that, the relationship with the coaches and the type of offensive system they run is something I'll look at."
