Charlie's Honesty: A bitter rivalry, a bitter pill to swallow

April 14, 2015

U.S. Marines Col. Nathan Jessup once classically barked: “You can’t handle the truth!”

He should have been addressing Texas Longhorns fans.

The truth hurts. Therefore, the sons of Bevo must be in agony.

Even worse, the pain has been inflicted by football coach Charlie Strong.

No doubt, you read the article by ESPN’s Chris Lowe in which Strong and Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin agreed they would like the Texas A&M-Texas football series to be renewed.

But Strong offered a caveat.

“Let me win some games first,” he said. “Then I can push (renewing the rivalry). I don’t know if I want to go walking into College Station right now.”

Strong’s message seems to be that he wants to play Texas A&M again, but not until his Longhorns are up to the task. Isn’t that kind of like saying you want to get back with your ex, but not until your Viagra prescription is filled?

Strong will surely draw the ire of his Longhorn constituents for his alarmingly honest opinions. Longhorns fans are too competitive. They’re too proud. They’re often too delusional. {"Module":"quote","Alignment":"right","Quote":"Strong will surely draw the ire of his Longhorn constituents for his alarmingly honest opinions. Ouch, that hurts.

Honesty is said to be the best policy.

However, that’s not always the case. Especially if you are a college football coach. In Austin.

Strong will surely draw the ire of his Longhorn constituents for his alarmingly honest opinions. Longhorns fans are too competitive. They’re too proud. They’re often too delusional.

About this time a year ago the first-year Texas coach angered some by admitting the Longhorns would not contend for the national championship.

“We have everything available, and I don’t know why we can’t be successful,” he said last year in Fort Worth. “There’s no reason for us not to be. Now, I can’t tell you how soon it’s going to be. Don’t hold me to that. Don’t say, 'Ooh, Coach said next year we’ll be in the national…' We will not be in the national championship game.”

Some in Austin were outraged by that admission.

Never mind that Texas had quarterback issues. Never mind that Texas had offensive line issues. Never mind that Texas had receiver issues. Never mind that it was the truth.

Frankly, there’s no reason to believe the Longhorns will get better soon. Their quarterback situation remains a mess. The offensive line is questionable. The defense, which was their saving grace in 2014, now has major holes to fill.

Meanwhile, A&M appears to be trending upward. The Aggies posted eight victories last season in what was expected to be a rebuilding year. They return eight starters on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Sophomore quarterback Kyle Allen may be an emerging star. Sophomore defensive end Myles Garrett already has become one.

Texas A&M obviously has the superior football program now. That was apparent in the Texas Bowl when the Longhorns turned in a dismal performance in a 31-7 loss to Arkansas, a team the Aggies defeated.

Lindsay Crouch, TexAgs Kevin Sumlin has made it clear he isn't against the return of the rivalry, but his focus has been on bigger fish: the rest of the SEC. {"Module":"photo","Alignment":"left","Size":"large","Caption":"Kevin Sumlin has made it clear he isn\u0027t against the return of the rivalry, but his focus has been on bigger fish: the rest of the SEC.","MediaItemID":55885}
Indeed, the only area in which A&M and Texas football appear on equal terms are assistant coaches with legal matters.

Texas offensive line coach Joe Wickline is suing and being sued by Oklahoma State. Texas A&M Defensive Coordinator John Chavis is suing and being sued by LSU.

Fortunately for Strong, he won’t have to worry about facing A&M any time soon. Even Sumlin said finding a place in the schedule to renew the series won’t be easy.

“I think it will happen somewhere down the road,” Sumlin said. “The tough part for both parties, when we moved, was scheduling.

“People sometimes take scheduling for granted and say, ‘Play this team.’ They don’t know the process. But I think the Texas series will happen. I just don’t know when.”

Actually, A&M and Texas might have played in last year’s Texas Bowl. Instead, the Southeastern Conference sent the Aggies to the Liberty Bowl where they spanked West Virginia, 45-37.

Some accused A&M of ducking Texas then. They implied the Aggies wouldn’t play the Longhorns for fear of losing.

Obviously, that wasn’t the case. It’s difficult to take seriously such accusations from fans of a team that finished with a losing season.

Combine that with Strong acknowledging Texas isn’t quite up to the challenge which A&M presents. For Texas that has to be a bitter pill to swallow.

A bitter blue pill.

They will post uncle Rico head to head series stats and last ten years ect. they are not very smart fans either and why should they play little brother ect.

Living in the past. Reminds me of my blind loyalty in the early 2000s and talked about how great we were in the 90s. They have Alabama arrogance without the Alabama history. as much as we hate Bama. At least their fans make Austin fans look like complete morons with cfb knowledge

Wow Sumlin's scheduling comment showed what a colossal idiot Strong is.

While honesty is the best policy as a head coach you should be able to answer media questions without lying but also without throwing your own team under the bus.

I like Strong. He is honest and that is something that has not been a behavior out of Austin. That means the Legislature, the sips, the DA, etc. in Austin.

We just "played" them in track and spanked them good on their own track. Surprisingly they voted the Ags the best team at their relays.

OK, sure we can play them anytime, anyplace, etc. Fine with me.

Aggies "spanked West Virginia 45-37." Outscored would have been a better verb.

Screw them!! Forever!! For everyone wanting to get back with that delusional, high maintenance, cheating, self serving bi!ch of an "ex", do I need to remind everyone about how many times we were screwed by the refs in past games. Of how they have treated us as a red headed step child when we were "together". Right now, we are finally realizing the potential that we should have enjoyed decades ago without that "anchor" dragging us down along with the help of the media and the NCAA that they bought long ago.

Now, they are the ones struggling. They are the ones needing a "high profile" in state game that will garner TV ratings and sold out stadiums.

For now, let them stew in the fermenting crap pile they created.

We do not need this game, they do.

APHIS AG,

Great POST!! You are 100% right. We don't need this game at all. Better to leave them hanging.

This. I'm still torqued about '63. Their 1st NC was bogus.

YHY, agree completely. Willenborg intercepted that pass in the end zone for sure. I still think about it to this day.

Folks that want to renew the series need to brush up on our long, one-sided unhappy relationship with those people. The degree to which they used their political pull to keep A&M in a diminished position is understood by very few people. If more understood there might be a revolution.

Does anyone think that if the roles were reversed that they would do anything other than step on our necks even more firmly? To Hell with 'em.

The last time Texas played A&M in football... Remember that? In Kyle field? A&M loses.

The bitter pill is having to be the team to leave the conference a loser.

You haven't won the SEC. Have you ever even won the SEC WEST?

The university of texas played for two national championships within the last ten years. The bitter pill is even when you are better than texas you are never quite good enough.

Well, longwhorns should know something about swallowing, LHoward. Refs had to put time back on the clock against Nebraska to get into that second NC game for Cote to wuss out once he got there. Don't forget the game where the sips flooded the field so that Wicky could get the rushing record. Cheaters. Don't ever wanna see that crap orange color on Kyle Field ever again.

At least we ARE in the SEC West. Something you turds will never be.

And don't act like its no big deal. Cuz we both know it is. Choke on that for a long a$$ time!

A powerful and moving defense of the Texas A&M education system. Texas won a national championship in 2005. What are A&M's odds to win a national championship in the next decade? You have to glamorize your two loss season when Johnny M was a freshman. Texas has played for the national championship twice in the last ten years. Texas played in real games that had national implications, we won and we eventually beat USC. In 2009, Texas played in real games that had national implications, we won and we eventually lost to Alabama. Misspelling Colt and Ricky's name is pretty comical. Thanks for that. All I'm doing is pointing out the truth. I haven't said one thing that isn't factual. Keep talking tough while your team is going in the wrong direction in the win loss column.

A&M Football:
11--2 in 2012
9--4 in 2013
7--5 in 2014

What was so terrible about the Big 12? Was it the losing? You are going to have a lower long term win rate in the SEC than you did in the Big 12. The SEC has better football than the Big 12 in every way. The SEC is the best conference in the nation. It is also tougher to run the gauntlet. There are pros and cons.

Playing with tougher teams makes one better. And I'm all for that. At least we play the cream of the crop always - not the Tcehs, Baylors or the Ou's of the BDF.

And certainly not tu. I'd be glad if we never played the whorns again.

btw - your coach doesn't even want to play us now. Jokingly or not (not) he's on record.

Dear whorns,

Your coach said your team is not good enough to play A&M right now. The joking part was inserted 24 hours after the article first came out, to try to downplay the truth he was trying to speak. You morons should listen to your coach. You are not ready to play A&M.

I agree the Texas team may be inferior to the Texas A&M team this year. I don't know why you guys are acting so tough about your team though when you are coming off of a 7--5 season. You had five losses.

When you peaked you had two losses. When Texas peaked they played for the national championship and won.

And what makes you think we "peaked" already. The pieces are finally falling into place for us and our potential is unlimited. We have a new DC that can actually coach defense and our offense is still top notch.

Now, lets look are your "peaked" football team now. I still do not see that "potential". You still do not have a QB, at least one that Strong can call by his first name. Your defense is going to be worse than last year and your coach readily admits the whorns suck.

So, do us all a favor and go over to your "real" rivals football board. I am sure both of you can compare suckage for we have some real football to play this fall.

These are what numbers look like when you've peaked. Texas peaked and played for two national championships. A&M peaked and went 11-2. What makes you think that you will win more in the future when you've consistently done worse each of the last three years in the SEC?

Pathetic sip takes the first three seasons of our SEC membership and compares that with a decade long decline of their dumpster fire of a program.

How bout top coaching recruiting facilities in a superior conference with way more national exposure. I like our odds to win a NC in the next 5 years. It will become more and more apparent in the next few years that our program won realignment. Enjoy that LHN and lack of BDF network.

With that mindset, what makes you think your "whorns" are going to win the BDF since they have also been declining, having a losing overall record these last several years.

And do not bring up a "new" coach because I stated the same thing with Chavis coming on board.

Howard,

You keep referencing a 7-5 season.

Maybe you are bad at math, or maybe you want to ignore bowl games last year -- because including them results in a losing season for the horns -- but the Aggies were 8-5 last year.

If you are going to purport to only state facts, it might be beneficial to make sure they are correct.

While you are superficially correct that on paper it looks like we are pointing in the wrong direction, many would argue that we are now bringing in our best talent, and with proper coaching, should see the results manifest itself on the field.

That being said, a 9-3 regular season (5-3 in conference) may not be impressive in the Big 12, it could warrant a top 10 national ranking in the loaded SEC.

Cheating? Both Broyles and Royal would laugh and wink about stolen playbooks in that one. Why Royal made that out-of-the-playbook call to win the game.

Nixon messed that one up. And it chapped Paterno's ass until the day he died.
