Memory Serves: The truth about an A&M-Texas bowl game

November 18, 2014

Since creeping into my 50's, the memory plays tricks on me.

On Tuesday, it was running serious razzle-dazzle.

The confusion started with this tweet from Chip Brown, a respected Austin-based sports journalist: “Is the SEC telling bowl games with SEC and Big 12 tie-ins it doesn’t support a Texas vs. Texas A&M postseason matchup?”

He took a passive-aggressive approach. Technically, he only asked a question, but implied the Southeastern Conference might seek to block a Texas A&M-Texas meeting in a college football bowl game.

Two Dec. 29 bowl games — the Liberty Bowl in Memphis and the Texas Bowl in Houston — match SEC and Big 12 teams. So are we to believe the Southeastern Conference, which assigns its teams to specific bowl games, would manipulate the pairings in other bowl games to ensure the Aggies and Longhorns don’t play?

The implication that the SEC or Texas A&M would seek to duck Texas really has the memory befuddled. After all, wasn’t it Texas, angry that Texas A&M was moving to the SEC, that ended the regular-season series?
quote
right
The implication that the SEC or Texas A&M would seek to duck Texas really has the memory befuddled. A request for comment from the SEC is pending.

The implication that the SEC or Texas A&M would seek to duck Texas really has the memory befuddled. After all, wasn’t it Texas, angry that Texas A&M was moving to the SEC, that ended the regular-season series?

Wasn’t it then-Texas athletic director Deloss Dodds that told Texas A&M that the Longhorns’ football schedule was too full to include Texas A&M?

To refresh a failing memory, this excerpt was found from an Oct. 15, 2011 ESPN.com article:

"'We’re scheduled out with non-conference games through 2018 and our Big 12 schedule is not yet settled,' Dodds said in an email to then-A&M athletic director Bill Byrne. 'What we have right now is a full schedule, but if any future options are available, the decision will not be made by just one person.'"

College football schedules are often adjusted and re-adjusted. Games and can be canceled or postponed. The trick is finding an opponent that wants to play. Texas A&M wanted to play Texas. That series could have been continued had Texas shared that desire.

Later, Dodds told the Texas student newspaper The Daily Texan: “They left. They’re the ones that decided not to play us. We get to decide when we play again. I think that’s fair. If you did a survey of our fans about playing A&M, they don’t want to. It’s overwhelming. I know. I hear it. Our fans are important to us. I think there’s got to be a period where things get different. I think there’s too many hard feelings.”

Of course, there was some revisionist history as well as some typical arrogance in that quote.

SI.com The end of DeLoss Dodds' time in Austin was characterized by, among other things, a constant misrepresentation of the A&M-Texas situation.
The end of DeLoss Dodds' time in Austin was characterized by, among other things, a constant misrepresentation of the A&M-Texas situation.
To say A&M didn’t want to play Texas just isn’t accurate. A&M just didn’t want to play Texas as a conference game.

And why should Texas get to decide when to play again? Why would that be fair?

That comment brought back memories of a colorful remark by Baylor women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey, who said she wouldn’t schedule Texas A&M for the same reason she wouldn’t sleep with her ex-husband after a divorce.

Dodds' comment sounded like someone who’s been divorced, but thinks the ex should be at their beck-and-call.

Dodds felt like Texas should get to decide when to play A&M again?

Well, obviously the Longhorns decided that Jan. 4, 2013 wasn’t the time to play.

Texas and Texas A&M could have played in the Cotton Bowl following the 2012 season. The Cotton Bowl wanted that matchup. But two Cotton Bowl officials told me face-to-face that Texas wasn’t interested.

Look, I was born and raised in Texas. That traditional Thanksgiving Day game between the Aggies and Longhorns was part of my heritage. It was part of who we were. I hate that it’s gone, especially because so many people who aren’t from Texas were instrumental in that rivalry ending.

Yet, the Aggies’ non-interest in playing Texas now is understandable. Texas didn’t want to continue the series, but now wants to play a bowl game. Therefore the Aggies should dutifully comply?

That ship has sailed.

Though Brown’s tweet only asked a question, it came off as an accusation. Did someone inside Texas’ athletic department make an accusation that led to the tweet?

Kirby Clarke, TexAgs At this point, the Aggies have way more important concerns — and opponents — than Texas.

If so, that comes off as monumentally hypocritical.

Besides, why would Texas A&M, which has played five teams that are currently ranked, look to duck unranked Texas?

At least one ESPN analyst projects Texas A&M to face Texas in the Texas Bowl. Another pits Texas A&M against West Virginia there.

But Jerry Palm of CBS Sports projects Texas A&M to the Outback Bowl to face Wisconsin. That’s the matchup the Aggies should be looking to duck.

That would pit A&M’s struggling run defense against Wisconsin Heisman Trophy candidate Melvin Gordon, who leads the nation in rushing and gained more than 400 yards just last week.

Texas’ running game isn’t nearly as potent. The Longhorns haven’t rushed for as many as 250 yards in any game this year.

Well, that is if memory serves.

They hear what they want to hear and believe what they want to believe. Unfortunately, the majority of the national media will more rapidly share t.u.'s opinion on the matter than A&M's.

"Texas didn't want to continue the series, but now wants to play a bowl game."

As to the second half of that sentence "sez who?" Why is the writer assuming Texas wants to play A&M based on a question some rarely-accurate sportswriter asked?

Let's just let things sit where they are for a while, like about 19 years - that's how long Texas waited to play Arkansas after they bolted the conference ...

There is absolutely nothing to gain by playing Texas, but a lot to lose. We have the advantage in recruiting just by being in the SEC. Why give them the opportunity to gain some advantage on us?

I think Texas would play us in a heartbeat. They are surging and we are foundering. It's time for us to put our money where our mouth is, with recruiting on the line. If we declined this matchup with all the whining about Texas dodging us, would prove us to be hypocrites. And if we get our butts kicked, that would be the impetus to make major changes in our coaching staff in short order. We should be promoting this game, and if Texas backs out, then they are the pansies, not us.

would that it could be so. Can you imagine 19 years of A&M and the SEC in Texas, with no t.u. in the mix?

Talk about solidifying your base!

I think our defense will be healthier by the time we get to a bowl game and will surprise some folks. I'd love to get matched up against Texas too. Olin's article almost sounds like this is a case of "nuh-uh...they did it first."

We should look forward to a chance to play and beat up on UT-Austin any time. Plus, who doesn't want "eternal scoreboard?"

True and that healthier defense would still get power stomped by Wisconsin's run game.

Oklahoma got pushed out of a BCS game because N illinois finished in the top 16 of the last poll. The Cotton Bowl took the second place Big 12 finisher over a Texas team that finished in the middle of the pack and had just got killed by TCU on Thanksgiving. To say the Cotton Bowl would have picked Texas over OU is crazy.

I find all of this chest-thumping and finger pointing by t.u. interesting and ironic. Where was all their crowing about playing us while Johnny was playing? I'll tell you where it was......non-existent!! Now that we are having a down year in the SEC West, they want to play us? How pathetic and obviously transparent!!!

t.u. has a bunch hypocrites that call that university home. And their arrogance is beyond measurement. They constantly say that any conference in the US would be glad to have them as a member. I know as a fact that the SEC absolutely does NOT want the horns anywhere near the conference. This information comes from a very high ranking source inside of the SEC. They do not want and would not accept the "prima donna" horns in the conference.

The JFF Aggies would have destroyed the horns in both 2012 and 2013 by big double-digit margins (just like Oklahoma in Cotton Bowl) and they know it if they were an honest bunch. Probably not this year though. It would be a toss-up this year due to our youth and current talent level. However, I would still like to see the game and see what happens. Win or lose, both schools would win in the Public Relations race.

As a UT student who grew up in College Station in a UT-A&M-split family: I hope to god the teams play soon.

I still follow both Longhorn and Aggie football, and I'll root for either team (and only a smidge harder for the Horns at that). But students in Austin want to see a match-up. Aggies want to see it happen. My whole family wants to see it happen. Honestly, the Thanksgiving game was my absolute favorite family tradition. I only got one as a student, and I felt kinda robbed.

I mean the Aggies would probably slaughter us, but I don't give a damn. I just want that game back - and so do most Horns I know.

Chip Brown seems to me to be a self-promoting tool of the former (and present shadow AD?) Texas AD. Might not be fair, but he always had that perspective neatly in a package with a bow.

The sooner we can not schedule to play Texas, the better.

As a fan of Texas football in general, there would be nothing more beautiful than a Texas Bowl featuring the two flagship schools in the state of Texas. Of course the Texas Bowl wants this game, its absolutely going to sell out. Hell, they should rename it the "#WRTS Bowl." Point blank these two schools need to get their heads out of their asses and give everybody in the state what they want to see.

Neither the venue nor the quality of the teams this year are worthy of the match up. It's just all wrong. This game must be played in college station, Austin, or a major bowl venue to be worthwhile. Texas bowl sucks. Both teams are mediocre this year. Neither side should want this game.

Just cancel the entire college football season and just recruit and national titles will be handed out in February.
Maybe that will work better for you

I don't understand why a lot of you are saying this, or saying it's a no-win situation. I think there's plenty to be gained from playing and beating texas. Current status aside, they're a name brand still and considered a "blue blood" program in the football world. Even beating them while they are down would have some merit. It can also help solidify the choice we made to leave the conference. It can show everyone (especially recruits) that while we may be floundering a bit in the SEC, we're still better than a surging texas from the BDF. I think it also would be beneficial for saving face - we've had numerous officials make the "any time, any place" statement and to then duck under the "well the conference decides" excuse is pretty chickenshiit. While the SEC may decide, I think our statement should be something like "while the SEC Conference does get final say in our bowl destination, we'd be eager to play our old rival. You never know when we'll get the opportunity to have this matchup, it could be another 30 years before it happens again since they have refused to discuss any regular season scheduling." Remind everyone they are just as much to blame as us leaving for there being no annual game, and make it clear we aren't going to duck anything.

I think the more we can make big bad texas look like the little pansy biotch for not playing us, the better it is for us. Sure there's a little downside if we lose, but in all honesty it'll likely be a 6-6 team vs. a 7-5 team, it's not like they'd be ruining a dream season for us or anything.

Let's stop here for a second. The best college football conference invited us to become a member. We happily accepted. We also wanted to retain the game with horns OOC and the SEC agreed to accommodate that request. The horns refused, and it wasn't even a polite refusal. A bowl game won't "solidify" anything, nor does our choice require any justification...ever.

It can show everyone (especially recruits) that while we may be floundering a bit in the SEC, we're still better than a surging texas from the BDF.

Recruits are not as dumb as you are implying here. The best want to play the best. If they want to be noticed by NFL scouts they know the SEC is the best place to be for that to happen. You may think that we are "floundering" in the SEC but so are Auburn, Florida, South Carolina and LSU. We still have more national attention and relevance than any team in the Big XII.

I think it also would be beneficial for saving face - we've had numerous officials make the "any time, any place" statement and to then duck under the "well the conference decides" excuse is pretty chickenshiit.

You do understand that the entire bowl game mechanism has dramatically changed since those statements were made. Either the play-off committee or the SEC determines the bowl selections. The bowls themselves have no say anymore, even the biggest bowls.

That sounds okay, but there is an addendum: we want to play in the best bowl against the best opponent. Is that really the horns this year??

Really starting to get irritated by how much people on this board are blowing the whole "we're in the SEC" thing way out of proportion. This is a gross oversimplification of how recruiting works. If this was all there was to it, every school in the country would want to be in the SEC. Being in the SEC does not automatically make you relevant or get you attention. Winning does. I'm sure any Vanderbilt, UK, or Vols fan could explain that to you. We've gotten to where we are over the past few seasons because we've been a WINNING SEC program. And we had a Heisman QB who was constantly in the headlines on and off the field. If we had gone 2-10 and 4-8 in our first two seasons in the SEC, you would be singing a completely different tune about whether or not we needed justification to recruits for the move. Those seasons were our justification, and a win over Texas would be a nice way to rebound from a potentially embarrassing 7-5 season.

And saying we've got more national attention and relevance than any team in the BDF? Bold move, Cotton. I'm sure TCU and Baylor would disagree with you. Why go play for a mediocre SEC team when you could play for them, win a natty championship, and still get more if not as much exposure to NFL scouts?

Being in The SEC won't solve all our problems for us. Thinking otherwise is a very narrow-minded and conceited way of thinking. Very similar to the type that put the sips in the position they're in now. You have to consider all variables.
aggiehawg

Where did I say that winning was irrelevant?? I didn't. Rather I was talking about the exposure for the program afforded by being in the SEC and having JFF.

And I seem to recall a certain former Athletic Director who deduced that recruits would like to be on tv a lot so his family and friends could see him play, even if they couldn't attend his college games. He even thought these recruits would get a kick out of being on tv while they were still in HS. Created a network to do just that. Just didn't work out the way he thought it would.

I'm old. I tend to take a longer view of things. Five years from now would playing the horns in the Texas Bowl be a watershed moment for either team? More than likely not. Would not being paired with them affect the trajectory of either team? Again, more than likely not.

My preference is to go to the best bowl we can and IMO that isn't the Texas Bowl to play a 6-6 horn team.
