Jackie Sherrill discusses finding leadership from within

Key quotes from Jackie Sherrill interview

“The coaches are watching the film and looking at the tapes now and getting a better understanding what Kyle Allen can do, so I’m sure this week there’s quite a few things they’ve eliminated, and some they may have added. Performance-wise, it was not what we all expected and you’ve got to analyze why he wasn’t a good as we anticipated.”

“Going into the Arkansas game in 1984, we worked very hard defensively in stopping the option. We started very well and knocked their QB out, and then here comes their backup QB who couldn’t run, but he could throw and we hadn’t spent any time defending the throwing game. To make a long story short, it comes within. What you see on the football team right now and have to ask is where is the mature leadership? Compare it to other teams around like MSU or Auburn or Alabama, and they have some senior leadership.”

"After that Arkansas game, there was one player, Ray Childress, who stood up and turned the whole team around because they had never seen Ray say a word. He was very quiet and never talked, but he did that week. The players themselves then learned how to win. Part of winning is knowing how to win."

“How did Mississippi State flip flop around from last year? They go from really bad to all of the sudden being the top team in the country. Talent wise, you look at this team and you have talent, but it comes back down to senior leadership. How many freshman played last week for A&M? If it was easy to fix, anyone could do it.”

“You have to give Mississippi State credit. To handle the pressure, someone like the head coach has to take the pressure off the players. One of the best ever in the business at doing that was Berry Switzer. You would go to practice at Oklahoma on a Friday and they're out there laughing and giggling. He did a skit every Friday and it was a big deal with the players. That doesn't mean they weren't focused and ready to play. There is something to being able to keep your team loose but focused and ready to play.”

“Even you folks doing the radio and TV shows, how long did it take for you to get comfortable? The players that are really making the plays what class are they in? They aren’t in the senior class. How much better can Speedy get? How much better can Myles Garrett get? You know they are going to get a lot better and by the time they’re juniors and seniors.”

"The worst thing to happen to this team is what happened at South Carolina. What happened at South Carolina gave everyone a false reality that this team was going to be able to fight for the championship and that they were a lot better than they actually are because of that game.”
