Jackie Sherrill gives coach's insight into A&M's issues

Key quotes from former A&M HC Jackie Sherrill

“The question is, are we being realistic? Before the season everyone predicted a 6-6 or 7-5 season. We still can finish between 6-6, 7-5 or 8-4 or even 9-3. What is the problem? We over inflated the balloon against SC and it burst against Mississippi State and flattened when we lost to Alabama. Like Kevin said, we are in the process of finding the holes and patching the holes and blowing air back into the balloon. The question that everyone is trying to find out, is the balloon repairable?”

“You go through Lamar, Rice and SMU and A&M did not have a true evaluation. That gives you a false reality plus it produces a lot of false habits with the players. After playing those three games, reality set in against Arkansas.”

“Kenny was not as sharp against Arkansas like he was in South Carolina. There’s a reason for that and you have to trace it back.”

“Somebody has to stand up. It comes down to how mature is this team? That is what's frustrating. Where is that guy that will step up and lead? We coaches get a lot of credit. But the guy standing on the sidelines is not the guy out there. Somebody has to step up and be a leader. Someone has to be accountable.”

“It’ll never change in any level. If you can’t run, and you can’t stop the run, the chances of winning aren’t very good.”

"Myles is dominant but the D-line isn't. I feel for Snyder. It's hard to go to a fight when you don't have the same tools."

“Top to bottom you’d have to say Auburn probably has the best personnel, and Alabama … those two teams. Then, Mississippi Sate and Mississippi. Those four teams, you could put in a basket and shake it, and any of them could win a game against each other at any time.”

“You have one dominating player defensively … Myles Garrett. Now is he dominating in the run? No. Is he dominating in the pass rush? Yes. He will end up being a great football player.”

great insight and spot on. No leadership from young team, defense has 1 dominant player, we play smu, lamar, rice..doesn't tell us anything before we actually play real teams.

I agree with everything he said. However, he seemed to put it all on the feet of the players. It's up to the coaches to develop these kids. Myles was not the only good defensive player that we have recruited. And it's not hard to develop leadership. You simply point at the upper-classmen and say, "You need start leading these younger guys" just like the Cadre for the Corps of Cadets does.
