Offensive Tendencies

PRIMARY
They like to advance the ball up the court with a pass up the sidelines and then attack the basket with the dribble. They have a lo of "quick hitters" (sets that require only one or two passes before they try to get a shot) that get them into the flow of their offense. Love to use ball screens to penetrate into the paint for a shot or kick out to the open man behind the 3-point line. They will shoot a lot of threes if given the opportunity.

HALF COURT OFFENSE
Quick Hitters -

If they don't get a shot off the quick hitter, they go to a 4-around-1 set or a 5-out set, looking to penetrate and kick.

"Flex Screen" - This is used to try to post up their bigger guards
  • Point guard passes to a big in the high post and cuts through to the ball side block
  • PG sets a flex cut screen for the wing in the corner and then ducks in, trying to post up
  • If the big can't pass it to the PG, the weak side wing rotates up and the big reverses the ball and they play from there

"Hand Off / Stagger" - This is used to get a 3 at the top of the key
  • The point guard is in the middle of the court, the posts are at the top of the key and the wings are in the corners
  • The PG dribbles to the opposite side of whoever he wants to shoot the ball
  • When the PG picks a side, that wing comes out of the corner to receive a hand off (free throw line extended)
  • After the hand off, the PG cuts through to the opposite corner
  • While the PG is cutting through, the two posts at the top of the key are setting a staggered screen for the wing that is in the corner without the ball
  • The wing receiving the staggered screens is looking for a shot at the top of the key

"Ball Screen / Stagger" - This is used to get a 3 on the wing
  • Point guard in the middle of the court, One post on the block, One post at the top of the key, wings are free throw line extended
  • PG dribbles to a side and pushes the wing to the corner, at the same time, the post on the block is moving to the opposite side of the ball
  • The PG reverses the ball through the post at the top of the key
  • The post then passes it to the wing and follows his pass to set a ball screen
  • As the post is setting a ball screen, the wing in the corner starts to run the baseline
  • The ball comes off the ball screen hard, looking for three options 1) he takes it to the basket 2) he penetrates and kicks it to the PG 3) he passes it to the wing that ran the baseline and is now coming off of the staggered screen
"Staggered Ball Screen / Staggered Down Screen" -
  • The PG dribbles to the right side of the floor, there is a wing in each corner and the two posts are at the top of the key
  • The two posts set a ball screen for the PG
  • After the ball screen is set, both posts then continue to set a staggered screen for the wing in the corner
  • The PG is looking to 1) turn the corner to get into the paint in score, 2) make the help defense collapse and kick it to the wing, or 3) pass it to the wing who is coming off of the staggered down screens for a shot
5out
  • Pass and cut
  • Penetrate and kick to the open man
  • Post will set a ball screen and either roll to the basket or pop for the shot
Horns set
  • Posts are spread high at the top of the key, the PG is in the middle of the floor with the wings in the corners
  • The PG can pick which ever post he wants to use as a screen and that post will roll to the basket, while the other post will pop to the top of the key looking for a shot
  • If the PG doesn't shoot or get to the rim, he reverses through the high post and they play 4-out with 1 post player
End of shot clock or game clock
  • They will go into a 1-4 low set, where the ball handler has the ball in the middle of the floor near half court and the other four players are spread across the baseline
  • One of the posts will come up to set a flat screen right above the top of the key and the ball handler will use the screen and try to make a play

Defensive Tendencies

Man-to-man
  • Don't really pressure the ball handler, unless they think his handles are suspect
  • Will deny some players (Middleton, maybe Holmes, or whoever gets hot)
  • Different for each player's scouting report
  • Will switch guard to guard screens and big to big screens
  • Try to force the dribbler baseline and not let them into the middle of the floor

2-3 Zone

  • Have shown it throughout the year and should expect it against the Aggies
  • Not the most active zone, but they switch it up and never stay in it for too many possessions

Keys to the Game

  • Be Aggressive... Start strong and end strong, don't give them any hope.
  • Be Physical... Put a body on them after every shot, hound them on defense, don't let up.
  • Bench Play... Wear them out. They only play seven or eight on a consistent basis. Run them into the floor and put pressure on them for 40 minutes.
  • Protect Home... A&M has lost the last two home games.
