Rick Stansbury hired as final basketball assistant

Rick Stansbury — the former head coach of the Mississippi State Bulldogs — visited Billy Kennedy in College Station on Friday last week to interview for the final assistant coaching spot on the Texas A&M basketball staff.

On Wednesday, it became official: Stansbury will be hired to fill the position.

Stansbury, who decided to retire from coaching in 2012, has remained prominent around the college basketball world and kept track of everything that has occurred throughout the past two seasons. While he chose to end his career to enter 'the next stage of his life,' he hasn't forgotten everything he knows about college basketball since that time.

During his years leading the program from 1998 to 2012, Mississippi State won more games than any SEC program not named Kentucky of Florida. In fact, during his tenure as head coach of the Bulldogs, Stansbury went 293-166.

But that's just conference play jargon. What about the postseason?

Stansbury won a number of conference games, but he also made it a habit to extend his team's play into Spring Break. In 14 years as head coach, Stansbury's teams made trips to the postseason 11 times — six NCAA Tournament appearances and five visits to the NIT. Included among those are the four SEC tournament final games he led the Bulldogs to, two of which he won.

Why is Kennedy a good man in your opinion?

The empiricists would probably say it's some combination of nature vs nurture, but I lean more towards it being about his spiritual rebirth because that's where he would give any credit.

What, that not what you were looking for?

There was a lengthy discussion about this here: http://forums.texags.com/main/forum.reply.asp?topic_id=2475376&forum_id=7&page=&txa=r#r

You can read about the positive opinions about BK from people who know him and hear that those opinions are worthless from people who don't. It'll enlighten you, about some of the folks on this board if nothing else!

Never ever in the history of man has an ******* had his buddies vouch for him.

That is indisputable evidence he is saint.

I don't base my opinions on knowing him. I base them on how he has treated his assistants and players here as a coach. That is more objective than your vague drivel about him being some awesome guy because you go to church with him and have some undefinable business relationship with him.

jorts probably knew him better than you (through his relationship with Cyp) and jorts sees that BK is not some saint.

Good people take responsibility. Good people don't trash their players. Good people don't stab their palls in the back. Not saying Kennedy is evil, but a good guy he isn't.

I think Stansbury + Rahim is likely an upgrade in coaching staff from Cyp + Reese the previous season. So all I can ultimately now do as a pure basketball fan who mostly just wants to see us WIN is applaud the staff changes that Kennedy made. Things were obviously not working the past 3 seasons, and Stansbury has more skins on the wall in terms of bench coaching and player development than Cyp, and he looks like he has a pretty good recruiting track record as well.

Whatever personally happened between Kennedy and Cyp is their business. I've heard things on the .net from both sides and like any divorce who really knows the whole story.

The biggest fly in the ointment with this change is Jamal Jones jumping ship. Presumably, he would have probably stayed had Cyp still been here.

the main thing about stansbury is can he coach sets and can he improve players. It seems like there is no real offense and the players have not gotten better since BK arrived. Immediate improvement in this team if he can do either of those two things.
