Rick Stansbury hired as final basketball assistant

May 7, 2014

Rick Stansbury — the former head coach of the Mississippi State Bulldogs — visited Billy Kennedy in College Station on Friday last week to interview for the final assistant coaching spot on the Texas A&M basketball staff.

On Wednesday, it became official: Stansbury will be hired to fill the position.

Stansbury, who decided to retire from coaching in 2012, has remained prominent around the college basketball world and kept track of everything that has occurred throughout the past two seasons. While he chose to end his career to enter 'the next stage of his life,' he hasn't forgotten everything he knows about college basketball since that time.

During his years leading the program from 1998 to 2012, Mississippi State won more games than any SEC program not named Kentucky of Florida. In fact, during his tenure as head coach of the Bulldogs, Stansbury went 293-166.

But that's just conference play jargon. What about the postseason?

Stansbury won a number of conference games, but he also made it a habit to extend his team's play into Spring Break. In 14 years as head coach, Stansbury's teams made trips to the postseason 11 times — six NCAA Tournament appearances and five visits to the NIT. Included among those are the four SEC tournament final games he led the Bulldogs to, two of which he won.

Interesting. Package deal?

It can be anticipated one of Stansbury's first assignments would be to pursue former McDonald's All-American Devonta Pollard to sign with Texas A&M's 2014 recruiting class. Pollard, who spent last season averaging 12 points and 6.4 rebounds per game at East Mississippi Community College, was a major recruiting target by Stansbury when he was at MSU and Pollard was a five-star player out of Kemper County High School. His mother, Jessie Mae Brown Pollard, was arrested and charged with kidnapping a 6-year old girl over a land dispute with the child's mother. Pollard was later charged with conspiracy to commit kidnapping and he left Alabama in June. Pollard testified against his mother and in exchange for his cooperation, he was given a two-year probationary period. His mother was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Built in excuse for when Kennedy runs him off after the season. Sounds like a perfect fit.

How do you wager on something where there is no proof?

Unless you have some sort of photograph or other source like texags corroborating, you cannot prove what you saw. All you can say is you saw it.

You cannot win a wager on this without something other than your eyewitness account.

If you have proof please share it. Otherwise I call bull****.

I think it is a great hire from many angles.

I am not sure it is enough to save BK but the hire definitely piques my interest.

I really want to know the background on the motivations for the hire.

I would have been interested in the possible Banks hire but this is magnitudes more impressive than that would have been.

Why don't you just provide the proof? Only an idiot bets blindly. Instead of trying to engage in some asinine internet wager, show us what you have in terms of proof.

All you have provided is your eyewitness account of BK buying Stansbury's gas in BCS in mid-April. Sorry if we do not accept that as the gospel.

But I thought you weren't betting blind? I thought you had a source that conflicted mine, and that my source should get their eyes checked? How confident are you in your source, I'm 100% positive in mine...

Besides, if I'm going to troll, I might as well try and make some money with it, amirite

I'm more confident in my source than your source until you provide proof.

If you cannot provide proof your source is no better than anyone else on this thread.

Sorry that is just the way it works.

Hence the proof.

Where is it? You either have it or you don't. You either provide it or you don't.

Trying to make up some stupid bet to cover for the fact that you do not have any proof to back up your claim, is pretty much grade A trolling.

Trust me, if Logan comes out and backs up your story, I will give you credit for not being full of ****.

Until then you are.

This is a great hire, but the interactions between Stansbury and Kennedy are going to provide some high order intrigue. Stansbury is substantially better qualified to be the HC by every metric you can think of and they're roughly the same age. Not only that, but he has to know this. Their resumes aren't even comparable and the eye test says the same thing.

I wonder if it's going to bother Stansbury to watch Kennedy screw up things Stansbury knows he wouldn't screw up, all while he earns less money than Kennedy. Or will Stansbury will be content with a lesser role? Or maybe he'll be happy to fix things in the background and let Kennedy take the credit. If it's number two, I wonder if it will tick Kennedy off that Stansbury is acting like the HC and overriding him in a lot of ways?

Could be Game of Thrones: Reed Arena next season!

If true, Logan will probably confirm in the next 24 hours through texags and if he does, good for you for having a sharp eye to recognize BK buying Rick Stansbury's gas a month ago.

That would have been aggiegrant material if you had shared it then.

That is why it is a brilliant move. It increases interest in what would have been a terrible trudge through another awful BK season. Now, there is some hope and intrigue.

Yea if Kennedy gives him enough authority and autonomy, we can actually have a decent team. This guy has a rep for developing big men. Well, Trocha and Roberson both have some talent. If he can surprise there, help the team cut down on dumb mistakes, and fix some of our fundamentals, we could make a big improvement. I wish like hell that we'd kept Jones.

Miss State is doing so well without him.

I remember he had some nice things to say about Billy when they drubbed us at MSG shortly after Kennedy came back from his medical absence.

I agree. I hope it happens. Frankly, if BK becomes a HC in name only and Stansbury runs the show, it would be the best thing for the program.

Yea he wasn't outstanding there, but in 14 seasons he made the NCAA tournament 6x and the NIT 5x. That's rock solid when you consider that he was at Mississippi State.

8 of their 10 NCAA berths came with him on the bench and 6 out of their 8 NITs since he was also lead assistant there under Richard Williams. They also made the final four with him as an assistant in 1996.

Correct, Deputy. Stansbury can coach up some bigs. Rebounding. Defense. Inside scoring.

He's not Howland at recruiting, but this was Starksville

JJ: I remember the MSG game well. Miss St. was a very well-coached team. Injuries stalled a top 15 team.

sounds like just the kind of character guy we are looking for. charged in a kidnapping of a 6yr old, then flips on his mom in order to get probation. this is a much better guy to have in the program than some pot smoker like JM Reese. cant wait to see txag72 defend him as a good kid while he is trashing jamal jones.

According to reports, schools showing interest in recruiting Pollard include Kentucky and Mizzou. I have no problem as a fan with us showing some interest in him too. Any fan that is interested, I recommend reading articles about his situation and what happened rather than forming an opinion solely based on TexAgs posts. There is plenty of info out there.

I would say KY in out of the picture for Pollard because of all the returning players at UK. Stansbury has a history as an excellent recruiter and gets talent to his school and even some guys with some less than stellar personal backgrounds. It's a good possibility that Pollard will be wearing maroon now with a chance to play for Stansbury for two years.

Seems like a pretty unfair take on things re Pollard. I remember reading and hearing about it at the time and I felt sorry for the kid. From what I could gather, he didn't know about the kidnapping and his only connection was that he got called by his mom to pick up one of the conspirators (a relative or friend of his mom 's) after the conspirator's car broke down. He picked the conspirator up and dropped her off at a hotel and left. His mom put him in a bad situation and he paid the price for it.

Regarding him "flipping" on his mom, he did testify against his mom but they had multiple conspirators (who were actually in on the kidnapping, unlike Pollard) testify against each other so it's not like his testimony ended up being significant enough for him to get a sweetheart plea bargain. He got off (the charge has been/will be expunged) because he wasn't a bad actor in the deal.

DPT is kennedy's biggest supporter on premium. of course you can justify this as a legit move.

dude was charged with conspiracy to kidnap a 6 yr old by the people who know MUCH more about the case than you or me. he then got a reduced 2 yr probation for flipping and testifying against his mom. those arent my opinions on the case, those are FACTS of the case.

I like DPollard's passion/energy...the closest we have to that kind of energy is AC. He would be a good addition to our team after JJones departure.

I'm BK's #1 supporter? Man, that's bad news for BK, since I thought he should have been "strongly persuaded" to retire after year 1. I'm just not one of those people who get mad at losing and then start disparaging people's character because I'm mad about the losing. Just because I think he's a good man doesn't mean I think he should still be our coach.

I've posted a couple of times about the Pollard situation. I think a fair reading of the reports makes it seem like he just had the misfortune of having a mom who did something bad, without his foreknowledge or involvement. The people who "know much more about it than you or me" decided not to prosecute Pollard yet they put five other people in federal prison for their involvement.
