Legendary Aggie Rod Bernstine on Manziel, Miller and Texas A&M

Key quotes from Rod Bernstine interview:

"The thing that attracted me to Texas A&M was living in Bryan... I got to watch all the big players from Texas A&M. I wanted to out do what they did."

"It was definitely Jackie [Sherrill] that drew me to Texas A&M. He is one of those guys that you are still afraid of him. He is a personable guy, but you have to respect him. When he walks in to a room, the whole room kind of stops."

"I wasn't very happy [with the move from running back to tight end]... I wasn't the guy that wanted to block."

"When Jackie [Sherrill] told me about the position switch, I just did what he asked me to do. I was rebellious at first, but after a while, I realized the decision was pretty good."

"The first Cotton Bowl when we played Auburn, I knew then that my position at tight end was something that I would flourish in."

"Kevin Murray was very instrumental in every thing I did at Texas A&M."

"[In this current offense] I would have caught probably 110 balls. They play a lot of 1 on 1... you just have to beat the guy in front of you. I had the speed, at the time, to do that. I would love to play in this offense."

"[In 2010] I had been watching the powerhouses [in the SEC], and I wasn't really sure that was the way that [A&M] should go... I thought that those guys [at Alabama] were a little bit bigger, a little bit faster and a little stronger. I wasn't really ready for us to make that move."

"[A&M] made the move gracefully and look what has happened. With a new coach, I didn't know if those type of offenses would allow A&M to flourish the way that they have. They seem to be doing a wonderful job."

"I have watched Johnny Manziel for the last couple years, and I really haven't seen another player like him. You watch him from week-to-week, he makes plays that you say 'Man, how did he do that?'."

"Last year when I watched him, I didn't think that he was able to make the passes that he would need to make at the NFL level. This year, he is a lot better in the pocket. He has great pocket presence. He is making accurate throws now, not just throwing them up."

"He has a great opportunity to play at the next level from what I have seen him do this season."

"The Chargers had the offense from Don Coryell. Who, at the time, was something similar to what Kevin Sumlin has done with Texas A&M."

"John Elway and Dan Marino are the top two quarterbacks I have ever seen."

"I am definitely excited to see Von Miller back on the field."

"As an A&M alum and a Bronco alum... I tried to reach out to him just say to hello and take him to dinner and help get his mind set... maybe just get him away."

Bernstine was an incredible talent, and durable. Played 9 years in NFL as RB (and TE).

Lifetime 4.5ypc is really outstanding.

Move from RB to TE at TAMU, then back to RB in the NFL. Good to hear from him!

I feel privileged to have seen him play in the Cotton Bowl. Fantastic Aggie and football player.

I remember that Bryan team with James Flowers, Todd Howard, and Rod Bernstein. Rod was a big back before he eventually went to tight end at A&M. Todd was a great linebacker, James was great at DB and QB. At Bryan they would probably have one a state championship if James did not go down with a knee injury in the 3rd playoff game. At A&M they had pretty good careers as well during Jackie's coaching years.

Uhgg. Here we have Rod Bernstine a former TE in NFL and we don't ask him his thoughts on how A&M should be using their TEs. Missed opportunity. I find it interesting that Auburn DC even talks about A&M NFL quality TEs but doesn't use them. Here's an idea .... Send one of Texags reporter to post game interview and ask the OC or Sumlin " hey I notice y'all don't use TE position is that by design or oversight? Can u imagine Cam Clear "clearing out" the spy on Manziel

Rod feasted on Auburn in that Cotton Bowl. He and Murray torched that defense. Rod was a baller on the court as well and I believe also played basketball at Bryan. Used to ball with him at east Kyle.

Why waste a TE to block Johnny's spy when Johnny will just fake him out of his jock?
