Texas A&M Football Recruiting

Elite QB Kyle Allen chooses Texas A&M

Kevin Sumlin and the Aggies have landed their second 2014 commit in two days ... the latest addition being perhaps the most important piece of the 2014 puzzle.

Scottsdale (AZ) Desert Mountain quarterback Kyle Allen informed Sumlin, position coach Jake Spavital and area recruiter Jeff Banks on Monday that he had chosen A&M over finalists Ohio State, UCLA, Notre Dame and Oklahoma State, as well as offers from most of college football's power programs.

Allen — one of the nation's top five signal-callers and A&M's No. 1 target throughout the process — addresses a dire need at the position and gives the Aggie offense an elite-level passer, leader and all-around field general under center. He's the quarterback that Spavital and the Aggies pegged as a dream catch from day one, the gunslinger who has blown up on this year's summer camp circuit and also the 2014 senior who will serve as one of the true centerpieces of this year's A&M class.

Make no mistake, Allen is as talented as any player A&M will sign this year. He's a guy who held offers from power players such as Alabama, ND and Ohio State but chose the Aggies and the chance to earn the starting job after Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel takes his game to the next level.

A strong-armed, 6-3, 195-pound signal-caller, Allen threw for 3,119 yards on 72-percent passing as a junior, tossing 36 touchdowns versus just seven interceptions. Kyle can make all of the throws look easy and is a plus athlete who has the ability to make plays with his legs by extending plays.

In addition to a quick release, an outstanding, smooth throwing motion and a live arm, other strengths that immediately jump off the screen when watching Allen throw the ball on tape are tremendous pocket presence and next-level downfield vision — the likes of which you don't often see from a high school quarterback prospect.

Allen's commitment is proof-positive that the Ags' out-of-state recruiting efforts have the potential to pay significant dividends.

It could also open the floodgates in the state of Arizona. Kyle's teammate is nationally-recruited inside receiver Mark Andrews, who is set to visit College Station on July 12. He's also connected to Chandler (AZ) Hamilton studs and longtime A&M targets Qualen Cunningham and Casey Tucker.

In addition, the Ags have already offered the state's No. 1 player from the Class of 2015 in Scottsdale Saguaro WR Christian Kirk. Every player mentioned — particularly those on the offensive side of the ball — are very interested in either catching passes from or blocking for a local superstar who many consider the nation's top pro-style quarterback.

Another headline-grabbing commitment for Sumlin and the Aggies. Like Jarrett Johnson's just one day earlier, Allen's pledge is important for the A&M program on multiple levels.

I went to lunch with a Texas alum today and as much crap as he has given me regarding A&M, even he brought up this commitment and noted that times are changing.

When can we start calling him "Kyle Football"?

How about after National Signing Day?
If he lives up to expectations, we can even name the stadium after him.
