Recruit Profile

Shaan Washington

Alexandria Senior (Alexandria, LA)
Ht: 6-3  Wt: 210

Recruiter: Price
Offer: Yes
A jumbo-sized safety who covers plenty of ground and possesses tremendous ball skills, Shaan naturally plays downhill and is physical at the point of attack – traits that will serve him very well as either a big, rangy safety or, perhaps eventually, a hard-hitting, 235-pound linebacker. Because of his frame and superb athleticism, the odds favor Washington making an impact in the defensive backfield. Already standing over 6-2 and checking in at 218 pounds, Shaan probably arrives on campus as a 220-pound safety. Wherever he lines up, the A&M defense added a tremendous athlete and football player. Whether chasing down ball carriers from sideline to sideline, taking interceptions or punts to the house, picking off passes or hauling them in as a receiver, Washington gets it done on the gridiron. It’s rare for players his size to make the kind of plays Shaan does on offense. When the ball is in the air, the big man flat out goes up and gets it, regardless of whether a defender or two is there. He has strong hands, excellent body control, leaping ability and excellent timing which make him a terrific “jump ball” target on deep balls or in the red zone that few high school corners or safeties are capable of stopping. He also runs through most arm tackles, routinely turning short passes into long gains. This fall, Shaan earned 3-4A Defensive MVP honors and first-team All-CenLa mention after totaling 72 stops, 2 sacks, 4 pass breakups and two interceptions – both of which he returned for touchdowns. As a junior, Washington emerged as one of Louisiana’s most productive two-way football players while grabbing first team All-District accolades as a safety, wide receiver and return specialist. Playing primarily safety on defense, Shaan registered 88 tackles and picked off seven passes (including one TD), earning LSWA Class 4A first team All-State honors. On offense, Washington totaled 1,196 yards and 11 touchdowns on 92 catches.
