Profile
Following a breakout junior season, Nate Askew emerged as a "must-have" target for the Aggie coaching staff during the spring evaluation period. After A&M made the strong push for his services, Askew chose the Aggies over runner-up Oklahoma State. At the time, he also held offers from Texas Tech, Florida State, Arkansas and Missouri.
While racking up 40 catches for 919 yards and 7 touchdowns as a senior (along with two punt returns for scores), Askew's stock soared but he stayed firm with Mike Sherman and the Aggies throughout the recruiting process. Following his stellar senior campaign, Nate earned several honors, including Honorable Mention All-State, 26-5A First Team All-District and First Team All-Area.
Nate's size, separation speed (he was clocked at 10.7 in the 100-meters last spring), long strides, strength, soft hands and terrific body control make him a very similar prospect to Aggie standout Jeff Fuller. In other words, Nate has a skill-set that makes him a deep threat, a possession receiver and a go-to talent all wrapped into one 6-4, 215-pound body.
The Ags are loaded with talented young pass-catchers but Askew's physical gifts are impressive enough that it's hard to envision him not finding a way onto the field as a true freshman. The reps will be important, because Fuller could bolt for the NFL following his junior year and Ryan Tannehill could very well be the Ags' starting quarterback in 2011. That would leave Askew as the only "big" receiver on the roster.
As a junior, Askew hauled in 51 catches for 856 yards and 8 TD's. He caught 17 balls for 313 yards and 9 scores as a sophomore.

What They Are Saying
"Nate is a tremendous athlete with great leaping ability and great hands. He turned into a real hard worker and a great leader for our team. My only regret is not being able to get the ball in his hands as much as we needed, and wanted to. In a perfect world, even though we were a running team, he should have caught 60 or 70 balls this year. We just weren't able to make it happen. Nate never complained about how many touches he was getting. He has a really good team attitude. I'm really proud of how much he's matured in the last year or so." - San Antonio Madison head coach Jim Streety.
"Askew has an excellent combination of size and athleticism, but he will likely be more of a physical, possession receiver at the next level. Is strong and well built. Has the size and wingspan to be a factor on the deep ball and in the red zone. He is not a guy that is going to create consistent separation as a route-runner, so he must use his frame and long arms to shield defenders from the ball and out-muscle defensive backs in tight coverage. He is a smooth, fluid player for his size. Shows some glide to his running style and can weave or stem as a route-runner to help gain an advantage at the breaking point. Has big hands, will extend away from his frame to haul in passes and has shown flashes of being physical in contested matchups on the jump ball. He can be a load to bring down after the catch, keeps his balance upon contact and will drag tacklers downfield." - ESPN/Scouts Inc.
