We live about 1/4 mile from the damage of the tornado. I heard the tornado and saw the debris circling over our house before I escourted the Mrs. into our bedroom and ducked for cover. A very scary moment. BTW, this is the 2nd tornado in this area this year, the 1st one in March blew my next door neighbors tree into our driveway and damaged 13 trees to my neighbor 2 doors down. We are feeling very blessed right now.

The 1st 4 pics are from Doux Chene Apts. the last is the McD's roadsign on S'West Pkwy.

Damn!! I feel for those students that are out of town for the holidays and now they do not have a roof on their apartment. Wonder if the local Red Cross or some organization would come out and try and salvage peoples belongings in this situation.

It also amazes me that a tornado went through there and the electricity is still on!!

Be safe B/CS!!! Glad it did not hit campus!!

That is what is weird about tornadoes. We had one when I was in high school in Monahans, TX. I have pictures of a home where the roof was lifted off a house, the curtains were sucked outside the windows and the roof was put back down. The most bizarre thing I have ever seen with the curtains on the outside of the house.

It also picked up a boat and tossed it into the local hospital, there was brick missing on the side of the building in the shape of a boat with the boat in the hallway of the hospital. Weird stuff!!

Holy yu know what! I live VERY VERY CLOSE to Doux Chene...was there really a tornado that ripped through there? Had the downstairs closet ready for the dogs and I just in case, and I just had ankle surgery so it made everything that more entertaining...I heard roaring, but just thought it was really really gusty winds...was attempting to stay away from windows, so dind't look outside.

Way too close for comfort...

And to think I felt a bit paranoid having my family hunker down in the bathroom for a few minutes.

From Rock Prairie Rd I saw a little rotation and the wind kicked up a bit, but that was about it.

ruddyduck,

I was born in Monahans, moved all over W.Texas as my dad was with Gulf Oil. Moved back for 2 years of high school in the late 70's. Do know a number of people from Monahans and my parents knew quite a few people through church and the oil and service companies. Give me some last names if you want and I will let you know if they sound familiar.

Sounds familiar to my dad. Grandpa worked in the oilfield and he grew up all over OK, NM, and TX, finally graduated from Andrews High School. I was actually born in Odessa before we moved to East Texas when I was 7...still have grandparents in both Odessa and Midland. I hate to put last names on a public forum, but uncle is the large animal vet in Monahans, and my cousin played football at Tech. They live right beside the golf course in town.

I doubt it. And the apartment complex has no legal duty to do it either, although it would make for good PR.

Those without renter's insurance are pretty much screwed. Ditto for those with liability only on their vehicles. Mommy and Daddy's homeowner policies might offer some coverage for off-premises personal property loss.

Best wishes to all involved-this could have happened to any complex in town, not just these old ones.

Fire, flood, burglary, windstorm.... Invest in renter's insurance. It only takes one loss to make you start over.

just found out on the Aggieland board that there's damage to the Wolf Pen Car Wash on Harvey. if so, it was just down the road from me and Cru.

So it was a tornado for sure?! The husband and I live right behind Goody's and we saw tons of debris flying in the air. Part of our complex's fence ended up in the Goody's parking lot, car windows broken, Wolf Pen Creek Car Wash torn up, and Shoe Carnival's sign ripped apart. We thought it was just strong wind...

yep. reported on the news. if you see "tornado warning" for your area, that means an actual tornado has been spotted.

From what I have heard, the city is trying to set up a shelter for the displaced residents from Doux Chene at the Lincoln Center. Quite a few units were damaged - not sure how many belonged to students who are out of town. If you are in CS, try to stay in tonight. More bad weather is on the way and there are some power lines down also. I will try to keep the Aggieland board updated until I get to go home.

Lady...what do I do if I suspect my apt. is damaged but I'm 800 miles away? I'm not slated to be back in CS until Sunday evening.

I'm mostly concerned about leaks and no power in my apt. (I live in Doux Chene). But I'm sure the management has enough on their hands right now.

"tornado warning" does NOT mean an actual tornado has been spotted. It can also mean the radar has indicated rotation that can creat a tornado. In the panhandle we have tornado warnings all the time without actual tornadoes

jlvaughn if you tell me what apartment number or building you are in I can check it out for you in the morning! I do live in Doux Chene! All electricity for the apartments has been shut off and most cable cords have been cut in the heavy damage areas!

jlvaughn - I was at the complex about an hour ago and there were still people in the office. You could try to call there?

This is the last info I had before I left the office.

UPDATE: The College Station Police Department advises that extra officers will remain on duty tonight to assist residents as needed. In addition, the following information has been provided from the College Station Fire Department:

Update from Doux Chene - Because of the difficulty of determining the extent of damage to the buildings at this apartment complex, College Station Utilities has decided to leave the electrical power to the entire complex shut off until sometime tomorrow. This means that an estimated 180 occupants will be displaced at least for tonight. Shelter has been made available at the Lincoln Center. The Lincoln Center can accommodate 200 plus individuals. The CSFD Community Assistance Response Team (CART) and the American Red Cross are assisting city employees in this endeavor. TAMU Critical Incident Response Team is assisting with any TAMU students who may be displaced.

ruddyduck,
Will mention it to my parent's to see if they may know who they are. I was mostly raised in Midland as I lived there twice also and for the longest period of time. I graduated Midland High in '79 and started at A&M that fall. We moved to Sugar Land(Houston area) that summer and have pretty much lived in the Houston area ever since. Do get back to W Texas, mostly Midland about once a year. Midland is a nice town and if I had to live in W. Texas again Midland would be my choice.

Hope all of you in College Station dealing with damage make it okay and that you get the help you need. I am sure the B/CS community will come through-they always do!!

That was wild to see. The wife and I saw it forming on the south side of town and head that way and got some video but you can't see much.

It's weird, we know how destructive and deadly they can be but at the same time were fascinated by it and couldn't stop watching.

I banged a girl that lived in those apartments fairly regularly my freshman year. Great way to build up experience. She was one of those 'not even pretty drunk girls' but what she taught me made the rest of my time in college fantastic!

Lady - thanks for the info. I didn't want to bombard them as I'm sure they're already stressed. I'll call Saturday.

Callie - I'm in unit 36. A buddy checked it out and said I had a busted window. Could you confirm? I'm also really worried about leaks since I'm upstairs and from what I understand some shingles were pulled up.

Is there any reason I should cut my vacation short and come home tomorrow (Saturday) instead of Sunday?
