Everyday I am unistalling this winfix program. It trys to look like something that came with windows, but I'm sure it is just a way to get people to register and take their money.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8500 and it came with Windows Office XP 2002 and two or three service packs have already been installed.

If this winfix program is able to install itself on my computer every day what else is "invading" my computer. In the last week I am starting to get popups as well.

Did a setting or something else possibly change on my computer? Do I need to go buy some popup blocker software?

This winfix program is really annoying. I don't see how they get away with doing this crap!

Any advice appreciated.

Is "winfix" the exact name?

My suggestion is to install AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy on your computer.

When installing Spybot Search & Destroy, take the "teatimer" option. This will help protect the registry from allowing these things in. Of course, that assumes that you use it wisely. For example, when it pops up saying something is trying to change the registry, check it out before you allow or deny the request.

You can get AdAware from http://www.lavasoft.de. It takes a bit of looking around to find the free home version.

Spybot Search & Destroy is available from http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html.

In both cases, you will need to load the updates after you install the software.

For some reason, the latest version of the Spybot Search & Destroy doesn't seem to scan well the first time you run it. So the very first time you run it, do the updates and the immunize thing and then exit and run it again to do the scan.

And I refrained from suggesting OpenBSD or Linux.

It's a pain b/c it takes awhile to go thru it all, but once you do you can stay spyware free pretty easily.

I went with XoftSpy 4.15 (before the responses on this thread) and it seems to be working well. I only got one pop-up in the past three days compared to dozens each day.
