From NOLA.com / The Times-Picayune (New Orleans newspaper) recruiting chat, excerpts that have A&M connections

topeka9: Do you think the [Les] Miles Sports Illustrated story will have any negative impact on recruiting?
James Smith, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune: I don't because of how long ago those events may have transpired.
Tiger Fan: Yeah and not with the stuff NOLA has reported so far. There is nothing of note against Miles that I have seen.

tigas1: Where does LSU stand with Hootie Jones, and do you think Cam Robinson's recruiting for Bama has any effect on Louisiana guys the Tigers are still targeting? It seems to me most recruits would be firm in where they stand now.
James Smith, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune: CRob's decision would only affect Hootie, IMO. The bad news for Tiger fans is that it appears to be affecting him. I feel that LSU trails Bama by a smidgen.
littledebbiesnack: Be honest, James. Hootie is essentially gone, right?
James Smith, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune: I would say that Hootie has one foot out the door with the other moving in the same direction.

tigas1: Is Gerald Willis starting to take place in Speedy [Noil]'s twitter fun and buildup for January? I would guess they are both committing at all star games?
James Smith, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune: Gerald and Speedy are having fun with the process. I don't have faith in the reporter from the A&M site, but the tweets are worthy of a second look. LSU is in their top group, though.
Tiger Fan: You know right, that the guy who runs Aggie Insider is predicting Noil to go to LSU?

Tiger Fan: Hope Mack Brown is here. :-) When you give up 550 yards rushing, it is NOT a defensive scheme issue. It is a lack of talent issue. Have you heard in past years that Texas basically did little camp evaluation and took the services ratings of players as gospel? If so, that would explain a lot wouldn't it?
James Smith, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune: Texas put a lot more into the star system than other programs from my experiences. Very little went into camp evaluations with most players already being committed by the time that rolled around was a major part in that. They certainly don't have the talent that many are accustomed to seeing.
Mack Brown: Yeah, I’m here. I’m not afraid to show up after a tough loss. The problem at UT is not my talent evaluation, because I use this recruiting chat to get my info. We had a bad game Saturday but I identified our one and only problem and I solved it. I fired and replaced our defensive coordinator Sunday and now we’re good to go! (clapping) I’m optimistic!
Tiger Fan: Hey Mack!!! But didn't you get rid of [Greg] Robinson a few years ago and luckily he got the Syracuse job as he was being booted out the door? I mean, [Manny] Diaz WAS the answer right? I can identify the problem and it has been the same one for years. Your defense can NOT tackle. LOL!
Mack Brown: I hired Manny Diaz because I thought he might help our recruiting in the Hispanic community. Unfortunately, he instituted his "Matador" defensive scheme, in which our defenders simply waved at ballcarriers as they ran by.

Tiger Fan: I will go out on a limb and give my next LSU commit prediction....Tony Brown! James, are you still sticking with [Russell] Gage?
James Smith, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune: TBrown is a solid guess. I will stick with Gage for now. I think both could be done soon.

lsutigers1919: How many commitments will LSU get during the high school football season?
James Smith, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune: I see four or five in the next 2-3 months. Tony Brown, Clifton Garrett, Gage and Gerald Willis could all be before season's end. Garrald McDowell will likely decide by then, but I still feel Ole Miss is leading there. In fact, I know they are.

Luvdatide3: LSU is still solid with [Leonard] Fournette it seems. Bama is still trying. What is the result?
James Smith, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune: Of all the big name prospects, Fournette is the one I am most confident about declaring for LSU.

Tiger Fan: Heard that Daylon Mack (2015 DL from Texas) will be at either the LSU-Kent State or LSU-Auburn game. He of course was at the LSU-TCU game. Looks like LSU is opening a huge lead for one of the very best players in Texas for that class!
littledebbiesnack: I hope Jimmy says something that is in complete contrast to what Taylor Hamm is saying. Please do it, Jimmy!
James Smith, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune: I was told the Auburn game. Mack is having a lot of fun with this process so I wouldn't put too much into what he says. However, LSU is in a good position right now.
Tiger Fan: Not going by his statements...going by his actions....2 LSU games in 4 weeks!

Ross: James, IMO, Saban seems joyless to be around. Les Miles seems like a coach I would want to play for. He seems to enjoy being the coach at LSU and enjoys his players. Does this play at all with these young recruits?
James Smith, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune: Saban rules with an iron fist, but some kids/parents like that. It all depends on the individual.

I wonder if the guy ever stops to think about the max # LSU could take. If all those guys that (his view) are ready to commit actually did, LSU's class would be 35 or more.

Love how the TigerFan is insistent about Mack even when James fricken' Smith is trying to temper expectations.

Maybe a lurking corndog could tell us how many ships they plan to give out this year.

I wonder if after the game Saturday this writer solidifies his picks of all elite LA players that visited will go to lsu...

Are we to the point yet where this is such a business that we can trade offensive verbals to other programs for defensive verbals?!?! kidding, kind of.

LSU only has 14 commits right now so I am not sure what you are talking about. I don't think he listed 21 names.

LSU will give out 25. The rest of the in state kids they want plus TB would put them around 22-23. They are also looking for an OT to replace Robinson. LSU has a kicker committed as well who apparently isn't that solid, who might get asked to grey shirt. That leaves a couple spots for the inevetible surprises that happen every year.
