recent comments from Geoffrey Ketchum, the Rivals Longhorn guy:
quote:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"In the wake of the recent NCAA rules changes that allow for programs to hire recruiting coordinators and support staff that is separate from the actual coaching staff, all of whom are eligible to participate in recruiting in almost every aspect (outside of off-campus visits), the simple truth as of this very moment is this ?

The SEC is ready for battle. All one needs to do is take a look at the support staffs that are being built across the board in the country's most dominant football conference. An inspection of staff directories will show that Florida has 24 football-specific employees and Georgia is up to 22. And growing.

However, if you want to know who is leading the front on this new era of all-out warfare in college football, look no further than the current Emperor of the Dark Side ? Nick Saban.

In talking with one source about the subject this weekend, I was told, "Alabama is building an army." He wasn't kidding.

While the Gators and Bulldogs each have directors of player personnel, Saban has hired four people specifically for that department alone. He also has added seven "football analysts," an "athletics relations coordinator" and a "recruiting operations coordinator".

All told, Emperor Saban has built a staff that consists of 28 soldiers for football only duty. All of them can be involved in recruiting at all times.

So, what about the Longhorns? Well, with all of that excess money ? somehow ? someway ? the Longhorns forgot to staff up the Death Star and they might just be ill-prepared for the attack Emperor Saban and the rest of the Dark Side ? errrr ? the SEC will be bringing them.

One look at the Texas staff directory shows that the Longhorns have nine people inside of their football department besides the on-field coaching staff and grad assistants, and six of the nine (I'm including Bill Little) are administrative assistants (i.e ... personal secretaries/assistants).

Arthur Johnson is the Associate AD of Football Operations, Marcus Tubbs is the Director of Football Operations and Ken Rucker is the Director of High School Relations and Player Development. Those are three guys outside of the football staff that Mack Brown currently has in place as the true battles begin in the 2014 recruiting wars. Everyone else is an administrative assistant or an administrative executive or a Special Assistant to Head Coach for Communications,

There are no player-personnel people. There are no football analysts. There is no separate recruiting coordinator outside Bruce Chambers.

And just because in painting a picture of what's going on around Austin, I need to give you guys as much information as possible, do you want to take a guess as to how many of Saban's army of 28 are administrative assistants? The answer is two. Yes, Saban has twice as many members on his newly minted player personnel staff as he does secretaries for the entire department."

Ifyou want to compete with that, be ready to spend a whole lot of money, and be ready to cross a whole lot of grey area lines into things you may not want revealed on the front of the sports section of the paper, without the benefit of having Slive at the SEC Office and Mark Emmert at the NCAA running interference for you.

Otherwise, consider those people can only take 25 a year, and do things the right, ethical way. Be assured Alabama and Ethics arent' gonna collide very often in recruiting.

I think you're being a little over dramatic, Sam.

There's nothing unethical about building the best talent evaluation and recruiting staff you can. Generally program staff members aren't the ones doing unethical things, it's the boosters who hand money to recruits. Having a large team of scouts who can spend 100% of their time during the fall watching HS practices and games is just a good strategy for consistently identifying the best talent year after year.

There are plenty of dirty things happening behind closed doors when it comes to recruiting, but hiring a bigger staff is not one of them. If we want to continue our rise to the top and stay there we need to be investing the same way Alabama is.

I bet we see a return to some of these regulations rather quickly.

Personally, I think it's a rather obscene direction for college football to go.

ha ha I had the exact same thought when I read it. I can't tell if he's confused or if he's conceding t.u. as one of the evil empires of college football (with gobbles of money) as well.

Agree. If this really does start to take off, I expect to see regulations pull it back in.

There was a story last year that, shortly upon arriving, Sumlin asked for a full time Recruiting Coordinator to be hired. He was apparently denied because we didn't have the cash.

I think there's probably a lot that Sumlin would like to do, but we are currently financial incapable of it. However, we are spending good money on coaches, recruiting and facilities. With every facility that gets done and done right, that's one fewer deficit we have relative to our competition.

I'm still digesting these numbers... consider the source, but if true, 28 full time employees dedicated to recruiting.. when you can sign 25. It's a 1-1 ratio. Is this really the best use of money? Should it be?

Seriously, it kind of makes me ill.

There are "only" 4 recruiting/player personnel out of that 28 according to Ketch. 28 includes all the football staff including admin assistants trainers, etc.

Our list of support staff on AA includes 30 people (not all specifically football but most of them are) plus Larry Jackson, Justin Moore, and Gary Reynolds are listed under the coaching staff.

In light of the Applewhite situation, there should probably be quotes around "personal secretaries/assistants".

You're looking at it backwards. It's not 28 employees for 25 signees, it's 28 employees for thousands of potential recruits. Alabama didn't stock up the talent they have by logging in to Rivals and sending offer letters to the top 3 guys at every position. Whether they are cheating or not, they do a better job of researching and evaluating recruits than anyone. After all, schools like Texas, ND, and USC have gotten pretty much whoever they want for years, and look where they aren't.

That said, is a staff of 28 employees overkill? Should college football really be so corporate? Those are different questions, but then again I have no doubt that Jabba the Ketch was among those who lauded Mack the CEO before they started looking like early-90s IBM.

Another example of Longhorn arrogance and ignorance. As a Bama alum and life-long fan, let me share a secret with you. We don't consider the Texas Longhorns to be a pimple on our posterior. Texas, you've lost. Don't worry about "Emperor Saban", you're never going to keep up with him, anyway. Horns need to worry about salvaging their in-state recruiting and reputation, because THE SEC representatives in Texas are killing you and it's only going to get worse. Game over Longhorns. There's only one Texas team Bama fans are worried about, and they sure as heck don't reside in Austin.

Seems like overkill for Alabama.

Boise State or TCU should have this set-up as they're the ones trying to find diamonds in the rough.

This is not a draft where you try to maximize a fixed position. In theory, Bama can take the top 25 players in the country.

Its a lot easier to spot blue-chippers than figure out which 2 and 3 stars will excel.

Ketch has referred to the 40 Acres as the Death Star for a few years now. He or one of the interns from The Drive in Austin started doing it back when the whorns were good.

A few thoughts, helps me to enumerate them:
1. Bama got to where they are by maximizing everything they possibly could.

2. These schollies are like 85 chunks of gold. They are that precious. I'd put all available resources into it. Bama has the top revenue (or very near it) in any given year in the SEC, and I believe they've pulled in the most cash, total, over the last 5 years. We are far, far behind them, but we'll be catching up at a certain rate. Boise and TCU have far lower revenue than do we, and so have less ability to try to do what Bama's doing, even though they need it much worse than does Bama. (Or us.)

3. Sure, Bama can take 25 of the very top players in the nation in any given year right now, when they're kicking tail like they are. This is about finding out which guys they want to target more than others. For instance, if greater dilligence would've provided warnings and red flags about these 4 thugs that were exposed recently, they might've gone in a different direction and avoided this problem. Therefore, they might prefer a Damontre Moore to a thug, even though Damontre was a 3-star. And with their depth, Damontre wouldn't've had to play immediately, anyway. If we can't match what they're going to do, it might not be us getting the Damontres, Colts, Breeses, Tannehill's, Jerod Johnsons and JFFs of this state....all 3-stars. It might be Bama, because they might have a better chance of finding them.

This is one of the reasons it's so important to have great relationships with the High School coaches of our state.
