That's very sad. I know how mad I'd be if some idiot cost us the Century Tree. It will be interesting to see what they come up with as a replacement given the tradition of the area.

I know it's probably financial unfeasible, but it would be awesome if they could replicate the size and shape of the trees with some kind of metal statue (for lack of a better term).

On second thought, I guess you could make the tree out of some kind of low cost composite plastic, and coat it with somenkind of spray on material that makes it look like bronze.

Bama fan here and I *DO NOT* condone what that %#*$# idiot Updyke has done to Bama's rivalry with Auburn. He is a transplant fan that is not even from our state, and he DOES NOT represent the true college football fans here in Alabama.

If the Toomers Oaks are like The Century Tree they have multiple known 2nd Gen offspring. I have some Century trees growing now nearing 10 years of age myself. I would donate them at any age in a heartbeat to replace The Century Tree if they were big enough to slide into that spot.

If any Auburn grads have offspring and suitable trees anywhere, they can be transplanted. Of course, they wouldn't be near as statuesque and beautiful until the next generation or two but the pride and genes would live on. Who knows, maybe there are known offspring that are 30 or more years in the area. They could create an even better
site there before the planting.

To the agronomists here, would it be difficult to genetically prove close relation to a specific tree?

That's what I was thinking about replacing the trees. It will cost several hundred thousand to transplant a mature oak, but it can be done.

Just have to remove all of the soil to make sure it is not contaminated in any way first.

Auburn is a land grant school. I'm sure they have someone who can figure it out and raise the money for the operation.

Updyke hasn't even gone to trial yet, but the trees are dead.

It's very feasible. The oaks in the Alamo courtyard were transplants at ~40 yrs of age, I believe done in the 1910's or 20's. Technology is not a problem. $ could be, but I would doubt it with a school like Auburn and the notoriety of those oaks.

Sad to see. Hope they can get some second generation trees in there and start fresh.

Is that dips* Updyke allowed inside Brian-Dennehy stadium? I would hope he's permabanned.

They could cut it up into several thousand pieces and sell them with a certificate authenticating their history.

Depending on what they sell them for, a pretty good sum of money could be raised towards replacing them.
