HOWDY!!!

How many out there remember when Kyle's lights were on at night? Personally, I remember driving back from Snook at night in the late 80's and early 90's, coming to a hill, and all I could see was Kyle in the distance. It was something to see.

Anyway, I would like to take a quick non-scientific poll on who would/would not like to have the lights back on, at least on home football weekends? Let everyone know!

DONE! I sent an email to Bill. Hopefully it is on the agenda for the coming year.

I'm going to guess that the reason the lights were on so much during that period was because practice was actually held on Kyle Field, when it was turf. And the team had to have the lights to practice. Now they have the practice facility and lights over there.

That being said, I like the idea and agree they should be on at night for home football weekends.

That may be true, but all I am talking about the actual Kyle Field with the ATM facing the west sign light. I don't think those lights have to be on for the field lights to be on. Could be wrong. All I know it is really cool to see them at night on football weekends for me.

I think the reference is to the sign lights, not the stadium lights. Wally said that his ass was too tight to spend the money to fix the sign and keep the lights on.

It will cost too much money to keep the lights on. Lets just fix all the burned out bulbs first and paint Kyle.

Well, as we are seeing Bill doesn't seem to think the same about spending money. Besides, I am only talking about, on average, 6 home weekends at 2 nights. 12 nights a year should be that bad. Hopefully they will bring it back for the future Ags to see it like I was able to.

I was under the impression that this was about the lights on "KYLE FIELD" behind the pressbox!

If you are class of '97 you probably never saw them on. It looks great at night. They used to be on at night 24/7/365, back in old army when I was there (87-91)

this topic came up last year and someone said that pigeons kept building nests in the sign and it became a huge maintenance problem.

I remember. I started coming to CS in 1985 when my sister was in school. They were on and then they were not anymore and I don't remember ever seeing them again. Being Class of '94, I was able to see a lot of things the recent classes aren't able to, for instance Bonfire, but that is altogether another post. Old Army, I miss that a lot these days!

I want some of the extra money I'm spending on season tickets (40%) to go to maintaining the dam* lights. I'm sure we could put one guy on staff just to keep the lights on. What will that cost? $40,000? Do it already.

As a side note, has anyone heard what they need the extra money for?

I got an email from Bill awhile back about this. I was asking if they were going to be raising prices on sports as well so at least they are helping out with the price increase. He said they will be visiting the other sport's possible price increase in the coming months. What he said to me is that the extra money will be going toward facilites, like Olsen, Kyle, etc. I was expecting an increase but no that much this year.

I agree with you about my extra money going to something like the lights for 12-15 days a year. Send an email off to Bill. More the merrier, I always say.

Does anyone know if there are still plans to put 2 parking garages on the west side of Kyle b/w Kyle and Welborn?

This is very disturbing to me b/c it will completely hide the lower half of Kyle. I hope they ditch the plans for this.

Which sport's budget would you like to see cut so that we can turn on these lights? I mean, look where the sign is--you aren't going to get an A&M maintenance crew to keep the birds out--you'd have to hire contractors to do it.

Some of you guys sound like women when it comes to spending other people's money

If PTTS can afford to buy themselves brand new Chevy Tahoes which is an ABSOLUTE WASTE of money, we can afford to turn those lights on.

money spent on image is well spent

Do like they do on ancient European buildings and in parking garages= put some metal spikes/wire in there to keep the flying rats from nesting. Done. Or, make it a fish detail to kill nesting pigeons in the lights

Of course, we could just slap some vinyl siding up...

Also, many recruits come up for games. If they stay overnight or come to a night game, that is just one more thing that could sway a recruit to come to A&M. The first time I saw it in 1985, it was really cool because I had never seen anything like it. A little investment could go a long ways with new students and athletes alike.

I agree that the bird excuse doesn't work for me either. Things can be done to not allow birds into the lights. They just haven't done it yet. Again, we are really only talking about 12-15 nights on. I would love to see it on 24/7/365 again but I also realize that the cost would be very high.

How can anything in the 80's be considered Ol' Army? Not that I am, either.

Now there's an idea for a class gift. Beats the hell out of the ideas for the class of '03 gift.

I didn't know the lights were off. I started in '85 and made the r/t home to San Antonio a lot. I always came back at night. I would see the lights from 2818 and knew I was truly home.

You guys talking about mid to late eighties being ole' army- when I was going to school we still had the original '03 class still attending football games. An Pinkie Downs a 0 something class was the official greeter of aggieland at the MSC lobby. No offense to todays 03 class but young folks like you should talk to some of us - the real ole' brown shoe army for information. I think its great to hear young people talk- go ahead and I sure you will-gig'em ole' army.

Bring back the lights!! Those lights have got to be one of my earliest memories of the campus - long before I was a student there or even thought of being an aggie.

Turn the "Kyle Field" lights back on!!

I'm trying to figure out, with all of the money that has gone into facilities, why we can't come up with a way to keep birds out of the lights?
