Appearently you can review simultaneous possession in endzone? And they still didn't overturn? Just heard this on SVP show. The guy upstairs dropped the ball

They did review it. They did not overturn it.

So the non-replacement replay official upheld the call?

Supposedly, they could not overturn based on Jennings actually establishing possession. They could only review whether the pass was complete or incomplete.

If true, there will be almost assuredly be a rule change next year. If not true, then the replay official (not replacement) screwed up majorly--or was trying to avoid a potential riot.

Reading an nfl statement right now is like reading something from Baghdad bob.

From the NFL's statement, citing the applicable rules:
quote:
Simultaneous Catch. If a pass is caught simultaneously by two eligible opponents, and both players retain it, the ball belongs to the passers. It is not a simultaneous catch if a player gains control first and an opponent subsequently gains joint control.

Not a simultaneous catch. Jennings "gain[ed] control first."

Both players did not "retain it." Tate's right arm and hand are not on the ball.

quote:
Player Going to the Ground. If a player goes to the ground in the act of catching a pass (with or without contact by an opponent), he must maintain control of the ball throughout the process of contacting the ground, whether in the field of play or the end zone.

Tate didn't even do enought to establish a catch. He did not "maintain control of the ball throughout the process of contacting the ground."

Not true. They can rule on possession, but only in the end zone -- like what did happen. I'm not sure exactly how the replay official and the Referee when he's under the hood come to any conclusion on a replay, as to whether there is definitive evidence to overrule or not. But I doubt the replay official didn't have a say in the ultimate ruling. I have to believe that if it was clearly missed, the replay official (who isn't a replacement) would have corrected it.

By rule, at the college and NFL level, it isn't a catch until there is contact with the ground. From what I saw, when the players hit the ground, there was simultaneous possession. This business about the Packer defender had it in the air and the Seahawk grabbing it later, may be correct as far as what happened, but it has no relevance in the rules. Its what happens when they hit the ground -- this case, with their body.

With that in mind, look at the video again and come to your own conclusion. It would be a mistake to take Gruden's or ESPN's word for anything relating to the rule.

I know everyone wants to jump on the replacements because they have missed calls (including a probable OPI on that final play) and they appear to be letting the coaches intimidate them a little. But this was a very tough play and even after looking at tape, there isn't a clear definitive answer. It was MUCH CLOSER than what most are asserting/assuming.

Golden Tate's flailing right arm is the clincher

Not even close. See above rules on what defines simultaneous possession.

Not even remotely close to simultaneous possession. Jennings had the ball tight to his chest with both elbows tight to his chest. They fell to the ground where Jennings still had 2 arms around the ball and Tate had 1 and still trying to rip it away. Once the two officials made conflicting signals and the Seahawk players saw the TD signal they rushed the field/end zone. They then proceeded to pull away all the Packer players AND Jennings away from the ball thus allowing Tate to have it at the end. This call was horrendous. The NFL, of course, backs the call because it's their officials right now and they are not going to admit the product on the field nor their decision-making is flawed in any way. What will bring this replacement issue to a quick resolution is when at probably 8am EST this morning, Goddell listened to his voicemails to hear team owners say "if I lose millions of dollars or my team misses an opportunity at the playoffs because of these officials, I am holding you personally responsible." I am not a fan of either GB or Seattle but I am still pissed about that call. Unbelievable how blatant the call was and the fact that after 3 weeks the calls are starting to get progressively worse.

funny, cause its the owners who are holding out on paying the officials what they want.

I never said the owners didn't elect Goodell as commissioner but it is his job to make the ship steer straight. The owners depend on him to give sound advice for what is best for their businesses. Losing sources of revenue is bad for business. They will absolutely be telling him to figure out a solution to this mess.

Wow, I think the photos are pretty self-explanatory. That was in no way a touchdown. It was either an interception or an incomplete pass cause the receiver sure as hell didn't maintain possession of the ball to the ground.

you have to be kidding, right?

there are about 10 owners that could end this right now with a phone call to Goodell. Guess what, they ain't calling.

the owners (that matter) are just fine with the result last night.

The owners (that matter) are fine with it until an error is made that impacts their team's playoff chances which could ultimately impact their bottom line.

I think the NFL just got royally embarrassed and they have egg on their face. It's kind of funny actually. I'm a Texans fan and never really been a packers fan, but they royally got this one wrong.
