Thoughts on Fordham

Although A&M destroyed one of the worst teams in the nation today 13-1, I really don't understand the point of playing these type of games at all. They are glorified scrimmages with nothing but a major downside in that some key players could get hurt. Well, that's exactly what happened today. Shea Groom, Rachel Lenz, Bianca Brinson, and Katie Perry all went down with injuries, a few minor and a few more serious. Why in the world would arguably our most dynamic player be on the field with 10 minutes left in a match? Yes, it was an ugly foul that should have been a red card, but now we have to sweat out some x-rays and the possibility that Shea could be out for a while. It just doesn't make any sense. At least it was an ankle/foot and not a knee. I would honestly rather just not play games like this and take a bye to keep everyone healthy and get added rest. There's no requirement to play 19 games as far as I know. North Carolina is only playing 16 games in the regular season, why don't we do the same?

- Annie Kunz just finds ways to score. She's not flashy, but she is very effective. She's starting to remind me of Ashlee Pistorious in her ability to score when she's near the goal and the ball is anywhere near her feet (or head). Another hat trick today and she leads the Big 12 in goals.

- Kelley Monogue is improving rapidly and is getting better and better. She has pretty much nailed down a starting spot alongside Merritt Mathias.

- Shea Groom had a good game and scored a couple of goals. She was active and a menace to the Fordham back line. Her injury is obviously the biggest concern going forward for this team.

- Katie Perry had a terrific game today and it was great to see her get her rhythm back after not playing against Baylor. The added rest has helped her get her legs back as I think she's had a tough time adjusting to this climate.

- Chelsea Jones is playing well right now, another good game in the middle and another nice header for goal.

- Beth West started today and she had another solid performance. She is almost back to her old form and it's fun to see her team with Chelsea in the middle of the field.

- Bri Young finally saw her first action of the season today and looked sharp for being out for so long. She even had a few free kicks on goal. I wish she would have redshirted, but we need to use her fully now if she's back. I expect her to eventually start on the back line with Meghan Streight in the center, which will allow Rachel Lenz to move back to the outside.

It was a good rebound game for A&M after an off night against a physical Baylor squad. Let's hope they can keep this momentum heading into Iowa State on Friday. We're in the easiest stretch of the season so there's no room for any missteps now.

Against McNeese we called off the attack with 15 minutes to play and just passed the ball around. Did we get mad at Fordham and keep pouring it on? Fordham seemed to be a better team than McNeese. Both Shea and Rachel went to the training room on the cart. Looks like Shea's right foot or ankle was the injury.
Looks like in the SEC all the current 12 schools play and they play each other once, so next year our conference schedule will probably be 12 games.

I agree, I think they were a better team then McNeese St. The team they beat on Friday, 4-2, lost to Baylor 2-1.

It looks like that was the most goals ever scored in a game by an A&M team. Previous most was 11 scored in 1994. If one was to dig deeper, it probably was the most assists as well.

Fordham site says that was the most ever scored against them, and only the 2nd time in double digits.

It looks like Jordan was in goal today. Any updates on Renee's injury?

Renee's right arm is still injured, wasn't in a sling or anything... but didn't give high-fives in the boot line with that arm

The coaching today regarding key starters' playing time was reprehensible. G's level of foolishness is juvenile. No way would my daughter play for him.

lol, who on our team isn't a starter???

LMAO....redd sees the "G" bat signal and runs to the rescue. Hilarious. BTW, my stated focus was on "key" starters, but you missed that like you do most other fine points of intelligent discussion.

How many starts do you need before you're a "key" starter? Can you please post the chart of starter hierarchy?

I agree that Lenz's injury is a major concern because it looked like a concussion. She was pretty groggy on the sideline. I really think Coach G should just have open dates after SEC games on Friday night if possible. We don't have to play 19 games and it would give our players a lot more rest to be ready for the next weekend, especially if it's a road trip. I just hate seeing our top players injured in meaningless games.

I was sitting with soccer parents. They said, "I can't believe Shea's in!" Then looked down the bench and couldnt decide on anyone who shouldve been in instead... Because they were all starters.

Of course no one wants to get hurt but the reactions here are border line dumb. Would you rather Merrit was in? Nora?

I forgot to mention Nora Skelton's play today, which was again stellar. Nora has really turned a corner this year when it comes to consistency and she has found a home on the outside flank where she routinely beats her defender and crosses into the box. Also, it looks like she has more speed this year too. She's making a strong argument for MVP of the team (along with Meghan Streight and Shea Groom) over the first 10 games. She finally got the start today and didn't disappoint.

While I agree we have a lot of interchangeable parts, the following players should never be on the field late in the 2nd half with a big lead:

Shea Groom
Nora Skelton
Meghan Streight
Beth West
Merritt Mathias
Chelsea Jones

I wish everyone played with the same effort that Nora does.

I'm glad your 3 person MVP shortlist through 10 games was Nora, Meghan, and Shea because I could not agree more. The 3 of them have been absolutely phenomenal. I think Meghan has been my favorite so far, but the other two right behind her.

We have a very young team. You take every opportunity you get to let them play games and get on the field. 19 games allowed, you play 19.

It was unfortunate the we had injuries, but we need the experience. Experience breeds consistency and chemistry. We can't afford to pass on these opportunities.

Not every game can be against a top 25 team. Injuries are (roughly) as likely to happen against good teams as they are against bad teams. It is part of the game.

I would agree that I'd rather not see Nora, Merritt, Lenz or Beth out there late in these blowout games, but it does give them an opportunity to work with the other pieces of this team in a real game situation.

Lenz took the blow to her abdomen, I did not notice how she fell. I was assuming it was going to be an injury related to the kick in the stomach.

I don't mind playing the games... but when we're up by over a touchdown, we just need to pass the ball around and kill clock. Like I posted in the game thread, there was no reason for Brinson to go up for a header in a collision with the goalie with under ten seconds remaining in the game. That's just stupid, in my opinion.
