It will be very interesting to see what happens to RC...early speculation was he would consider the Baylor job...but if Saban goes to Chicage, look for RC to pop-up in Baton Rouge.

though i have no love for lsu (though i am from the state), lsu would have a place in my heart if that were to happen. i would root for them for rc's sake. rc's character might contrast with that school's fans though and athletic program.

I'm an lsu fan and that would make me an even more fan of lsu if RC went there. I mean we wouldn't have to play him but if he goes to Baylor, somethings tellin me that he'll turn that program around. So I'm hopin for the LSU job for RC.

He couldn't succeed with A&M's resources. He would have no chance at Baylor.

The SEC would eat him alive. Some place like So. Miss would be a good fit.

Road Dog,

I believe he could succeed elsewhere with less resources. I am of the impression that Coach Slocum and company fell victim to the paradigm effect (doing it the way it has always been done). By the time he made big changes, it was too late.

He has now been awakened. I bet he would make big waves where ever he ends up.

RD, you have always hated the guy, as best I can tell.

The fact is, RC would be a BIG winner at LSU, would recruit a lot of players we wanted, and we better hope that he does NOT go to LSU, Arkansas, or any good school that could recruit texas.

He is something like 9-1 v. the SEC and is FEARED in louisiana.

It may have been time for a change here, but that is not because RC is not a pretty good coach.

You are correct, and I have my reasons.

I think he's a "pretty good" coach, but pretty good won't cut it in the SEC, just like it no longer cuts it in the Big 12.

I will give you and Tom this. He may have changed, and if so, he could be successful. IMO, he should be his own DC, and spend the DC money on a top OC. Then, he would have a shot.

I don't see it, but he's not our problem anymore. Recruiting wise, he wouldn't hurt us.

No way does LSU go with Slocum if Saban leaves for Chicago. I think they would go with promoting OC Jimbo Fisher or a pro assistant coach, like Georgia Tech did with Gailey. Anyway, I don't think Slocum would take that job, since it's much more stressful than College Station.

Bama is dead.

ESPN radio said earlier that Jerry Angelo (Bears GM) said that Jauron will coach Chicago next year...

from ESPN.com
quote:
Jerry Angelo's midseason vote of confidence for Dick Jauron has become a full-fledged assurance that the coach will return to lead the Bears in 2003. The general manager never put Jauron, whom Angelo inherited when he took over in the summer of 2001, out to dangle in the wind. But the furthest he went last month in discussing his coach was to say, "I'm assuming that my confidence in our coaches is assumed, and I'm not going to update on those assumptions.'' He delivered an update Dec. 3, making it certain that regardless of how the team finishes the year, Jauron will return for his fifth season.

that would mean no vacancy for Saban to take, and no vacancy at LSU.

so unless RC goes to Baylor or UH or wherever, he's still here, advising the president.

Also, RD, that IS absolutely right, as for the Slocum should be his own DC and spend lots of money on OC. Don't get me wrong, I am huge on Hankw., but RC is just a great dc, but that may be the best role for him.

Pretty good doesn't cut it in the SEC? Look, I am a huge fan of SEC ball, am extremely familiar with SEC, but there are just as many "pretty good" coaches in the SEC as there are in the Big XII. Not flaming, but it is always the SEC that dogs every other conference, with the "we just beat each other up, that's why none of us are in the NC this year" reasoning.

RD,

As a A&M, USM and Yellow Shoe fan (in that order) I disagree with the USM thing.

I think Slocum would be a great defensive coordinator in the pros - ala Arnsperger.

RC to LSU would be your worst nightmare. The man can recruit and he would own the state.
He also could recruit players with less academic rankings. I think the SEC allows more PQ players than the Big 12 also.

I hope that Byrne ,Gates and Fran (if he does indeed make it here) can at least level the playing field with the rest of the conference.

I think the SEC can take 2 PQs instaed of 1. He would not be my worst nightmare at LSU. He has already been that for the last several years. He would recruit just like LSU recruits now. A few Texans, but that's about it.

Junction is right on the money.

LSU pretty much owns the state no matter who coaches there.

RC is a very good coach - I think he was slow to react to changes going on in the rest of the Big 12. I think he learned from that and was starting to change this year - just too little too late. However, if he went to LSU, he would absolutely kill us by taking good players from Louisiana and Texas that we would be in on. I would be willing to bet that he would be very successful at LSU.

Gig 'em!

I hope it never happens. The pqs and lower academic standards would help more than you can imagine.

I agree with Road Dog and I have no ill will toward RC. He is a great DC, very average HC. I've always wanted him to run the D and let a hotshot OC run the offense. He had that chance with Toledo but instead insisted on a very conservative offense.

If RC goes to Baylor, he will learn very quickly how well he had it at A&M. RC beat mac3, leach, and stoops only once each, and stoops and brown blew him out twice. He will find it ugly at Baylor. And no way LSU takes him, a program like that can find a much bigger coaching name.

Again, I have nothing against RC, I just think he is an average coach.

I hope RC doesn't go to Bama if Fran comes here. He'll go to Bama and win a few MNCs.

I think RC could do some damage at LSU if he had the right staff and continued his more daring approach to offense. I don't think that would affect us much -- we do get a few plum recruits from LA here and there, but I don't think RC at LSU would change that a great deal. The only concern I'd have with Texas recruiting is the stellar relationship he has with Texas HS coaches, but I think Fran (or whoever we hire) will have no problem recruiting Texas. I still think RC is a good coach (not a great coach), but he'd gone as far as he was going to go at A&M. A new setting might give him new life, and I can't think of a better place for him than LSU. For those who doubt it could happen, remember (or know, if you don't already) that he was very close to taking the LSU gig after the '99 season.

I think he would recruit the hell out of the city of Houston. That WOULD hurt.

Case in point ......this year our dline was very thin.We had a recruit TWICE that we couldnt get in.Remember Eddie Brown???
This is the type of player he could get at LSU and not here.

Trust me RC + LSU would be bad............very bad.

Trust me, LSU would not hire R.C. for their head coach. If coach Fran came here, Fran would eat his lunch.

If you're a recruit and you see where R.C. gets fired from a program with unlimited resources, Saban voluntarily leaves LSU, and coach Fran leaves The University of Alabama to come to College Station, who would you think has the program with the brightest future?

Just a hypothetical question.
Road Dog
How long do you want to ignore this user?
That would be bad for LSU, not us.

Remember Pat Wiliams? Ever talk to him? I can assure you Eddie had nothing on him.The point is that we got some guys in that were longshots. Connell is another one. Ferguson is another one. Sure, he would get a few guys, but no big deal.

This is the 1st good recruiting class we've had in 4 years. RC was a good recruiter when Texas and OU were down. He was a good coach when the SWC was terrible. He's real good when he has no competition.

He would be competing against THREE top 10 programs for Texas players--Texas, OU, and TEXAS A&M! He would be exposed for what he is, and I would love nothing better.

Wishing has been pretty successful lately!

LSU won't hire him. Relax. I'm telling you it would be nothing to worry about if it did happen. We are about to have bigger fish to fry.

As an alum for both A&M and LSU, I agree with RoadDog that RC would be mincemeat in Tigerland after his first lost. Have you ever listened to the postgame call-in radio broadcasts after an LSU loss? They're so irreverent, that they're hilarious to listen to. We get so paranoid that this board will effect recruiting to A&M, even with civil, constructive criticism. Tune in to AM 1150 Baton Rouge after a loss, and you'll see how nice it is to be a coach in Aggieland.

Last years' class was mediocre. The best recruiting publication for my money, SuperPrep, ranked it 28th. I could make an argument for top 20, but not much higher.

Maybe if RC would learn to recruit badass OL he would be good somewhere. Even this year when we are obviously in need of big uglies our class is very light on them and we even had one decommit.
