I have this weed creeping through my lawn. It doesn't grow higher than the rest of the grass, it more or less grows horizontally. It is a deeper green than the st augustine. It is has a hard, wirey texture. What is it, and can I get rid of it selectively?

Looks like slender aster. It will produce small purple-white flowers later in the fall. It's an annual and very tough to control at this stage, so don't bother trying to get it now. Look into a pre-emerge early next spring or post-emerge applications later in the spring to knock it out. It will not look the same when younger...more of a lighter green with wider leaves, making it harder to notice than the way it looks now.

I was going to guess it was roadside aster. I had not heard of slender aster, but probably the same thing.

It appears this time of year in spots in my backyard. I have been successful in reducing the amount of it each year by just pulling it up and disposing it as I see it (I don't use warm season weed pre-emergent and this comes up pretty easily). It's easier to find where to start pulling once the flowers show up, which should be any week now.

If you get a good rain they can be pulled up pretty easy.
