Eight Big 12 athletic directors met with a media rights holder Friday morning to discuss forming their own cable network.

Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Iowa State, Colorado, Missouri and Kansas State had discussions Learfield Sports, a Plano, Texas-based company that manages the multimedia rights for more than 50 universities nationwide. Texas A&M AD Bill Byrne has talked and tweeted about the meeting publicly. The move is not related to any conference shifting, but is seen as a new revenue stream.

"[People are] interested in creating a cable network for the conference," Byrne told CBSSports.com. "It's something I'm quite interested in ... It's something that our fans are going to be demanding sooner rather than later."

This is the conference's last season as a 12-team league. Nebraska is headed to the Big Ten in 2011. Colorado is leaving for the Pac-10 in either 2011 or 2012. It wasn't immediately clear what Colorado was doing at the meeting if it is soon leaving the league.

Texas' rights are not handled by Learfield. The school has made it clear it wants to develop its own channel or network.

"If they can pull that off, my hat's off to them," Byrne said. "We're just having preliminary discussions right now to gauge the level of interest."

Experts have said the success of a college sports cable network hinge on the number of football and men's basketball games it can broadcast. Fox Sports, ESPN and ABC own those Big 12 rights. Byrne said there could be some flexibility in new negotiations. The Big 12 has been promised upwards of $20 million annually per team in the new round of negotiations which begin next year.

"That's what you have to have to have a successful cable channel," Byrne said. "You have to have football and a handful of men's basketball games."

Learfield played down the meeting.

"It caused a lot of questions [from media]," a spokesman said. "It was nothing out of the ordinary. It wasn't anything top secret."

This might sell in Big 12-2 territory but I doubt it would have the draw nationwide that the Big 10 network does. Would be great to see it happen though.

this from the guy that prefers to keep us off the tv so he can maximize the massive "walkup" demand?

the mtn channel seems to be doing just fine and they have even less of a draw.

If it plays football on it, people will watch. For serious football fans that try to watch all of the games, they will have that channel on regardless of location on one of their tvs.

And why is CU included and not Baylor/KU? (Obvious why UT isnt)

anything moving forward to advance any team not named tu (because they seem quite onery about BeVo TiVo) is a step in the right direction!

I am curious about KU and BU not being on board (are they pondering a move away from the Longhorn Conference or possibly not happy with their share of a proposed "alliance".

CU would appear to be "covering all bases" if the Pac 10 move does not happen, which shows a "proactive" stance, as opposed to a "reactive" one.

Well there's a revelation. Thank goodness for experts.

And the fact that Nebraska wasn't there but Colorado was is worrisome. I'm starting to wonder if Colorado knows they're not really going anywhere. If Beebe can salvage CU and add BYU and keep this league going it really hurts our chances of going to the SEC. Puke.

Also, who the hell is going to watch the Iowa State Channel?

Going back to an Old Main post....

note KU and BU in the pic!

What if KU was "eyeballin" tu in football, and willing to make a reciprocal deal for their basketball?

What if BU was shining the bevo hoofs instead of A&M's boots?

No matter what, Missouri and Iowa State have the best expressions!

Interesting point made about CU and BYU!

If CU and BYU take the Longhorn Conference back to the Big 12 I have 2 questions that should be raised:

a) what kind of "deal" did CU and BYU get in relation to other members of the conference not named tu or ou?

b) was this a "backroom" deal by somebody like ESPN to regain revenue they would have had to shell out to A&M (ie 20 Million Beebe Bucks) from the loss of a CCG?

I sure hope there is something I don't know.....cause if things are as they appear we are painting ourselves into a corner after blowing the SEC deal.

I guess we're supposed to be excited about this?

puhhhhleeez, can ya just let us ride out these last two years of the Bevo-10 in peace, since it will all change when we go to the SEC.

Oh yeah, Rick may still be gov and we might still have the same BORs in place....

I like Byrne's comment about tu's own network. Get the impression he does not think much of its possible success.

Let's go ski-man!

I think ku and bu are not included because their media rights may not be held by leerfield sports. I bet if you look it up the schools in the meeting all have their media rights signed over to leerfield.

Exhaust all other options first. . . . and then join the SEC.
