From The Times-Picayune (New Orleans newspaper) recruiting chat, excerpts that have A&M connections

Purpleandgold1: This time of year is definitely a snooze fest for recruiting. Occasionally someone picks up a verbal but it is usually more than offset in numbers by decommitments. You think LSU's next commit will be after the bigger summer camp in July? If not, could you send me a wakeup call like the motels/hotels do? LOL!
James Smith, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune: It would be fair to believe that LSU will strike gold during the July camp. If Deondre Clark makes it in town, done deal...

lsu 2011 sec champs mnc fact: Hi Duckie, by the way you are doing a terrific job and brightening all the LSU fans’ days!!!!!!!!!! OK, what about the O-line recruits? Who’s in and who’s out? Backup plan for Cameron Robinson? Who else are we recruiting for the O-line positions? Thanks
James Smith, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune: Koda Martin from Texas is a tackle option and LSU may revisit the [Saint Louis, MO OT] Andy Bauer situation. Rod Taylor from Jackson, Mississippi is an option...

Eric Barron: Since Brandon Harris eliminated A&M yesterday, what school does he commit to?? What about [Ohio QB DeShone] Kizer, does LSU get them both??
Bill60: Sounds like he eliminated A&M because they committed another QB. If LSU signs Kizer he'll probably do the same thing.
James Smith, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune: Harris has been adamant about being the only QB in a class. In his own words...If LSU signs Kizer I am not going there...

lsu 2011 sec champs mnc fact: Who is our next commitment? Crystal ball?
James Smith, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune: Deondre Clark will make it official soon

tigas1: James, with Mason Rudolph committing soon and possibly picking LSU, how does that affect the QB Kizer who is all LSU? Also, I am assuming it would have less affect on Brandon Harris who is a dual threat.
James Smith, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune: Brandon Harris will be bothered if either QB were to commit. He was initially being recruited as the only QB and that is what he wants.

northerntiger: Are any of the New Orleans kids camping [at LSU] this week or will they be in July?
James Smith, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune: July

lsu 2011 sec champs mnc fact: Does Harris really think that he will be the only QB LSU will sign? How big of a threat is Bama to sign him?
James Smith, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune: I think Bama is a threat, but Ohio State and even Auburn could challenge as well. The ball is in LSU's court here....either turn down the others or roll the dice and hope you don't push Harris away. May be rolling the dice either way really

Tiger Fanatic: James, yesterday Brandon Harris tweeted: “I'm ready to hear Kyle Allen's announcement this means a lot". After Allen committed to A&M, Harris tweeted: “I would like to wish Texas A&M the best of luck in the future, as they received a fantastic quarterback in Kyle Allen. I will not be pursuing Texas A&M anymore as this recruiting process goes along…” and “When one door closes, another one opens.” It sounds like Harris really wanted to go to A&M, but like you said in last week’s chat: “Harris doesn't like the idea of two QB's in the class.” If the LSU coaches prefer Harris over DeShone Kizer, shouldn’t they slow-play Kizer, not accepting a commitment from him until if and when Harris picks another school?
James Smith, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune: The question becomes do they turn a kid down or slow play a kid for a maybe? I think they take the first that tries to commit.

Bill60: There are numerous WR prospects in Louisiana this year. Should the Tigers put a "number" on how many they will take? Or should they take them all if they are great, and convert the extras to another position?
James Smith, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune: I would say take them all, but 2015 is even deeper at the position.

lsu 2011 sec champs mnc fact: Do you agree with Phil Steele’s preseason ranking of 17 for LSU? Last year we finished #14 at 10-3 so it seems with the difficult schedule to be a realistic ranking to me. Do you agree?
James Smith, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune: I said 8-4 a while ago and got killed for it...but I stick to my story...

Tiger Fanatic: Do you think LSU will offer defensive linemen Garrald McDowell and/or Davon Godchaux soon? What are the Tigers waiting to see from them?
James Smith, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune: I don't know if Garrald will wait around much longer. He cancelled his Bama trip yesterday to attend the [LSU] camp and wasn't overly excited about leaving without one. As for Godchaux, I expect him to earn his offer at the July camp.
Bill60: Now that McDowell from Covington has visited, have you heard anything about an offer from the Tigers?
James Smith, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune: I think it is unlikely at this point

lsu 2011 sec champs mnc fact: What about the DE and OL from Texas who came to the spring game? They are brothers, how good are they? Are they takes? And will they commit? One was 2014 and one was 2015.
Purpleandgold1: Sione Teuhema and his brother committed to Texas May 30th. I personally was glad LSU did NOT get them. Seems like one brother was worth the scholarship but not the other IMO.
Mack Brown: Sione Teuhema is a 2014 defensive end and his brother Maea Teuhema is a 2015 offensive lineman. They committed to me last week, and I want you Tigers to leave them alone! I'm having enough trouble as it is trying to catch up with those darn Aggies!
Purpleandgold1: Yeah Mack, one minor little problem. I doubt you will be at Texas to see either of those guys fax in their signed LOI.

lsu 2011 sec champs mnc fact: Do we offer Bailey Granier from South Lafourche? The big o-lineman?
James Smith, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune: They would like to work him out at camp in July, but I am not sure he attends it.

Tiger Fanatic: LSU offered 2014 Alexandria WR D.J. Chark yesterday. Does that indicate the coaches are not confident about signing D’Haquille Williams, Blacknall, Quinn, Noil, and Dupre?
Purpleandgold1: Read below about "conditional offers". I bet you anything that it is NOT a committable offer at this time. With his offers right now which are NOTHING offers other than LSU, he would have jumped on that immediately IMO IF he could.
James Smith, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune: I think that offer was more of a “we want to see you again” type of thing...

charles1natl: What do you think about Brandon Harris? Do believe he will commit to LSU?
James Smith, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune: I am really torn right now...if he pulls the trigger first...yes...If Kizer or Rudolph make the call first...then no Harris
Purpleandgold1: IMO, I hope it is Kizer! The guy has been on LSU the entire time, rated fairly similar to Harris, and the guy doesn't have the attitude that Harris has. I also remember Harris saying "If I don't have an offer already from someone, I won't be attending their camp." Sorry, but that is arrogant!

lsutigers1919: Do you believe Brandon Harris has already given a silent commitment to LSU or Bama? Also do you think Bama would prefer Harris or [Norman, OK QB David] Cornwell?
James Smith, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune: No I do not
James Smith, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune: They prefer Cornwell

Would suck for Harris if Alabama took Cornwell, and LSU took Kizer or whoever.

I am assuming that all the postings on TexAgs are just so much BS and Kyle Allen still remains an LSU lock?

I hope Harris stays in the SEC. Him going to tOSU just makes the end of the SEC's reign that much more likely. The more speed that goes up north, the worse for the SEC. This is why I wish we would have made a spot for Dontre Wilson last year.

Was this the guy that made some wild prediction about Koda Martin going to LSU? Where did that nonsense come from?

Funny how the lock mentality has gradually softened over the course of about eight weeks. The questions/prospects this week didn't lend themselves as much to it, but nevertheless he's talking now as if some of the targets actually could be considering other options.

Koda Martin is James Smith's pet "blue sky" LSU commit prediction. He said it's not based on anything other than a feeling he got from a conversation some months ago. Even he thinks it's a long shot, but has circled it on his card for "warm and fuzzy" reasons. Every good MC needs one of these hangers to keep the audience in their seats.

I actually get a kick out of the Mack Brown dialogue, even if it is cheesy.

Before I was all for the duel threat QB Brandon Harris.. His attitude towards the 2 QB situation. Attitude of arrogance towards not having an offer already. Sounds like a drama queen. SO HAPPY to have Kyle Allen! Attitude is everything!

This theme has appeared in previous weeks: "Well if targets don't work out exactly how LSU wants, they can just flip guys from other schools."

Bauer is an Ole Miss commit and has been for over a month now, and they think they can just swoop in and woo him away when the guy already has an offer and has clearly considered them. Oh the delusion.

At least explain why. I post a bold statement like the one I did to get some different perspectives on Harris potentially leaving SEC country. I can handle insults so long as they provide me with some useful info., but insulting just to insult on a blog....doesn't help anyone bud. So at least back up it with some legitimacy.

There have been really good dual-threat quarterbacks up north. Speed and athleticism at the QB position is not what separates northern teams and southern teams.

you are putting way too much stake in single players commitment. that's just not logical. osus qb is braxton miller. he's fast. the qb before, terrelle pryor also fast. before that, the Heisman trophy winner who's name escapes me was also fast. at Michigan they had denard Robinson, who is very fast. Indiana has had fast dual threat qbs in recent history. Nebraska has Taylor Martinez. wisconsin for a year had Tyler Wilson (fast).

your "fear" just comes across as immature... meanwhile lsu has not had a dual threat qb in a long time (jordan Jefferson couldn't throw) and same goes for bama. so what point are you trying to make. the football teams are better on average in the sec, but it has absolutely nothing to do with speed at the qb position.

Yes lets hope one of the top Qbs in the country go to a school where we will have to play against him. That sounds terrific.

Btw, Dontre wilson wasn't considering us.

Truth here.

I am a little surprised he is predicting 8-4. In related news, James Smith has been killed.

He was banging on our door to be let in, we just didn't want to lose any of our other WRs. He was very eagerly considering us for the few weeks up until signing day.

LSU signed 2 highly ranked QBs last year and doesn't really need to sign one this year. One will play a little, maybe even a lot, and one will redshirt.

So LSU goes from planning on signing two quarterbacks to not needing any?

Got it.
Tamu_mgm
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Sam - I wouldn't ride off the QB position for this year just because you got two 4 star Qbs last year. You guys didn't take a single QB in the class before that, and you never know how two QBs in the same class will pan out, even if they're both 5 stars (for example). Kids transfer, don't live up to the potential, get in trouble (Jordan Jefferson?), etc. This is the same reason why it was so crucial for us to pick up Kyle Allen. One QB from last year will most likely not be enrolling (due to the MLB), and who knows how the other will play out, even though he's a 4 star (and TX high school player of the year, etc.).

I would not ignore the fact that this is a crucial year for LSU to pick up a quality QB. That being said, you guys will most likely pick up Kizer. We all know it's Harris you really want though

That's not what I mean. They don't have to sign a QB just to be siging one, which is one of the reasons they wouldn't take a commit from Mason Rudolph before Kizer and Harris made their move.

They'd like to get Kizer and/or Harris in this year, but if they don't it's not the end of the world.

However, the next year, they have to score on a QB like they did in 2013.

BTW,the guy they got from Georgia this year, Anthony Jennings, who was a mid-term enrollee allegedly had a great spring and is expected to play some.

Tamu_mgm...there is talk the the one LSU wants is Kizer. problem is, Notre Dame just offered, and they don't have any qbs on their roster that can play worth a damn.
We'll see.

Up until March of this year, I was on premium almost religiously and will say that this contradicts everything anyone "in the know" said (and that includes a poster who knew his dad and called the tOSU thing months earlier).

He may have had more interest in us than he let on, but he certainly was not, by ANY account I ever read, banging down the door to get in.

I'd like to hear who stated this - maybe they had better info, but it certainly goes against everything I remember about the situation.
