This is an e-mail I got from a friend of mine who is in OKC for the tourny. He wanted me to share it with Texags and publicly extend his gratitude to Mr. Atchley.

A revealing story about Okie vs. Texas hospitality

We left DFW on Friday morning, dressed in Aggie attire, for Oklahoma City to
see the Men's Basketball Tournament and found out after we attended Session
3 that the hotel had canceled our room for Friday and Saturday nights as
well as charged us $200 for not showing up for our Thursday night
reservation, which we canceled mid-day Monday. Our discussion with the
assistant manager (Josh) led nowhere since he wouldn't even consider there
was a mistake on their end and kept repeating there was nothing he could do
to refund us the $200. About the time he insinuated that we probably
financially NEEDED the $200 and were more than likely making up the story
about canceling the room to get the refund, a gentleman who was checking in
at the time decided to weigh in with the manager on the lack of customer
concern he was observing.

This gentleman knew we were Aggies, told us he had an affiliation with UT
and then spent the next half hour helping us reason with the manger
(impossible), making phone calls to customer service, and aiding us in any
way he could (helping my wife remain calm and collected). About the time we
parted ways we learned his affiliation with Texas was through his son, #32
Connor Atchley.

Alma Mater aside, courtesy and respect of this nature make me proud to be
Texan.

P.S. Keep your distance from Amerisuites by the Airport, OKC.

Oklahoma and Oklahoma city have no idea how to run an event like the Big XII tourney. They should leave it in Dallas. They do a great job and have the experience required.

Wow, you really proved your point with this one. Texans are much better people than Oklahomans.

Nicely done!

P.S. I see the usual Oklahoma bashers (WestTexasAg, Austin_Aggie_13) have dropped in to give their Seals of Approval.

Tools.

I generally agree, but I think the West Texas Sand Fleas are honorary Oklahomans with the way they behave.

Tell them to call there credit card company, pretty good chance the C.C. will refund the charge and tell the hotel where to stick it.

I had it out with the Courtyard next to the Ford Center last night. Spent 15 minutes having them tell me I couldn't cancel my reservation even though the policy was that I could until 6pm the day of check in. Hung up, called the 800 number and they cancelled it in 2 minutes. I agree, leave it in Dallas where it can be handled properly.

Sorry to hear about everyone elses problems.

We booked the Holiday Inn Express of I-40 at Sooner Rd through the Holiday Inn website. We called them last night and asked about checking out a day early, and they had no problem with changing our reservation.

I really do feel smarter now!

Not to ruin your bashing of OKC, but some of these posters are making up their stories. They don't even know where the hotels are, let alone their policies.

First of all, one was criticizing the AmeriSuites near the OKC airport. That is curious as the closest one is approximately 21 miles away. If they didn't even know where they were, they didn't have ANY experience with them.

Secondly, late cancellations are usually penalized with at least one day of charges. I travel 5 days a week all over the country, INCLUDING TEXAS, and it is the same all over, depending on rate rules at reservation, and event booking, etc.

Seldom travelors probably aren't up to speed.

I have nothing but great things to say about our trip to OKC.Stayed downtown at the newly renovated Hilton Skirvin(only open for 8 days)and got treated great.Checked out a day early with no penalty fee.Great food, the people were extremely nice, everything within walking distance, felt VERY secure, and they even had undercover police keeping down the scalpers.
I talked at length to 3 of the cops and they were great guys.Downtown and the Brickyard were extremely clean with few,if any, vagrants.
While there,I was so impressed with the setup that I booked a room at the Colcord for the baseball tourney.
The only drawback of the whole trip was our men and women teams losing their first games.

I concur with Dermdoc.I stayed at the Sheraton across the street from the arenas. They screwed up our checkin (no rooms available at 5:00 pm) but combined our 2 rooms into a 2 bedroom suite they sold to us at a price less than the cost of 2 rooms. We cancelled Saturday nite's stay w/o a penalty and were able to sell our tickets right at the hotel when we decided to leave.Walked everywhere and never felt threatened or scared going back and forth to Bricktown.Helluva lot better set up than KC I'd vote for this venue any day.

The reality of the situation is that Dallas was a mediocre host, unfortunately. Now, I definitely support Dallas in its endeavors because most of the people in Dallas, unlike the rest of Texas, aren't vehemently spewing this crap about the place that I live.

Actually there is an AmeriSuites by the airport, but I don't know why anyone would want to pay $142 for a room in Southwest OKC when they could pay the same for a room in a few of the cheaper downtown hotels. Let's face it. When you're in the middle of the action, people treat you nicely. When you aren't, they treat you like they treat everyone else.

I had a really bad experience at the Hilton in DT Houston a few months ago. You don't see me whining about it. Actually, since I used to live in Montrose before moving to OKC I know better than to start blaming the average people in Houston for what went wrong.

Instead I can blame that hotel, and say I won't have my company set me up there again.

I am glad to hear that some more reasonable forum members had a great time in OKC. Where the arenas as 58 steps apart ... as opposed to one being in Victory and the other being in a high-crime part of DT Dallas.

Most people who have been to OKC for the first time in ten years, or even five, are really impressed with all of the changes happening in downtown, even all over the city. Hopefully bad experiences at a motel by the airport wouldn't dampen the impression of our fine city and our fine folks for the rest of the Aggie Nation.

I would invite you all to come back to OKC when the tourney is back in 2009. Of course it's not official, but I think OKC is definitely in the lead for '09. I am not sure if KC will be able to compete against all of the records we set. And all of the people we pleased.

I guess that's what happens when you have a sh*tty team. Those Sooners must be pretty bitter about going 0-4 against A&M and UT this year to get mad about us dissing their motels.
Good luck in the NCAAs, Oklahoma. Oh, f***...

Coming from a person who has had the misfortune to have lived a few years in OKC, the place is a dump and has no business hosting a tourney event. People in that state are some of the rudest I have ever met. The airport is pathetic and other than Bricktown the “city” has nothing going for it. However, it’s a great place for meth users and 6-toed individuals looking for a mate. Flame on Okies…
