Per The Ticket: Mavs beat writer Eddie Sefko claims Dallas and Detroit have agreed in principle to a sign and trade that would send Ben Wallace to Dallas for Jerry Stackhouse, Dasagana Diop and a 2007 draft pick. The trade would be completed on or shortly after July 1st, when NBA free agency begins.

If Donnie Nelson can pull this one off, he is officially the best GM in basketball, maybe in all of pro sports.

*edit* This claim was made by eddie Sefko

I will believe that when I see it. If it does happen you would have to like Dallas' chances to make it back to the finals next year.

Ok, anyway, according to the Ticket in Dallas, the Mavs and Pistons have agreed on a sign and trade that sends Ben Wallace to dallas for Diop, Stackhouse, and a 2007 draft pick. Apparently, Big Ben is very unhappy in detroit and wants out.

Ah, arguably the best defensive player in the NBA for a mediocre role player, an unproven 'big man', and a draft pick. Sure thing.

KT, the word out of Detroit is Ben Wallace is malcontent and wants out because he despises Saunders. He is a FA this offseason, and if Detroit doesnt do a S&T, they will likely lose him for nothing.

You have to admit though, a lineup of:

Harris
Terry
Howard
Nowitzki
Wallace

Would be the best in the NBA without question

I don't know why he'd leave when he already plays for the best line-up in the NBA. Has to be some really bad blood between he and Flip.

Their have been the same rumors about him to SA as well.

Neither is going to happen though.

Imagine:

Tony Parker
Manu Ginobili
Bruce Bowen
Tim Duncan
Ben Wallace

Would a team ever score 70 points against the Spurs?

The problem SA would encounter:

They cannot give up a role player of Stackhouse's quality, they would likely be forced to trade Parker or Ginobili

They cannot give up a center of Diop's quality (and much of his quality is his cheao contract and youth), and I'm sure Detroit would want something at center to help ease the loss of their onyl real center

They can give up the rights to Scola, who would have been a top 3 pick in this year's draft along with Barry and Beno.

or they could S&T Nazr and give them the rights to Scola.

I highly doubt Scola is a top 3 pick in any draft. Top 10, sure, but top 3?
jmtamu

He's the best player in Europe. This was a weak draft. I think Scola would have definitely been near the top. I just don't know that he is in the Spurs future plans, but he is definitely a good NBA player.

I call BS on Hostile. Did any other P1s hear this? I've been listening off and on for an hour now and there's been no follow up. Plus no mention by Sefko on the blog.

Most likely Skin or Norm said that "the Mavericks *might* be able to get Wallace for Stack/Diop, and Sefko agreed.

I haven't heard anything about a trade, but it isn't just speculation that Wallace isn't happy in Detroit.

He's sick of doing nothing but the dirty work.

This would be awesome, especially with a guy like Ager coming in who can kinda fill the void potentially left by Stackhouse. That said, I'm not holding my breath.

But yeah, it's a safe bet that either Wallace or Saunders will be gone before the end of the summer, and it will probably be Wallace, as stupid as that is for the franchise of the Pistons.

I really like Stack, but I think he might be slowing the development of Harris and Howard. Too many times the Mavs used Stack in iso situations, and although he is a good iso player, he is not strong enough with the dribble to consistently break down good defenders. This was the major knock against him coming out of UNC. To this day - despite his huge NBA scoring numbers - I think he would have greatly benefitted from another year under Dean Smith. If the Mavs can move Stack and get some value, it would really open up the end quarter/end game situations for Howard and Harris.

If the deal does not go through, I'm sure you will blame the refs or the conspiracy against the Mavs.

I'd be pretty shocked if it went through, but who knows.

As a Mavs fan, I think I like the trade - but one point to add....Wallace is about to turn 32, and Diop is just 24. Are we 100% convinced that Diop will never amount to anything just yet? Like I said, I still think I'd pull the trigger - but that would be the only thing that would bother me a little bit....giving up that youth combined with a draft pick.

It may be the right time to trade Stackhouse, while he still has a lot of value. He may be about to drop off the cliff in production due to his knees. He is losing the ability to attack the basket. The Mavs traded Van Exel to Golden State at just the right time - his production plummetted after the trade.

I think that the front office is looking to win now - Dirk is just now entering his prime and should sustain an elite level for 4-5 years before he begins to drop off. The Mavs have acquired a lot of talented, cheap, young assets, and it's time to cash them in if they can get a great veteran, even if the veteran only has 2-3 years of high level production left. There needs to be a good mix of young talent and championship caliber veterans.
