Going to Europe in a few weeks. We are staying in a fairly nice hotel but I figure that I will still need Europe adapters and/or converters. Any rec's on what I need to get?

I will have iphone, ipad, laptop and I assume my wife will have hairdryer and those sort of things. Will an adapter suffice or do I need to check into converters? Thanks in advance.

Your plug should say. Most modern gadgets are designed to take both US/Euro voltages, so you just need an adapter for the plug. Check before you blow it up though

As previously mentioned. Most devices will have a converter built into the plug or built into the device itself. Check the back make sure it can handle 110 - 220 (221 whatever it takes). May laptop and cell phone chargers work on European voltages. Not sure about hair dryers or electic razors.

you will need an adapter and possibly a transformer (the big bulky ones) to use the hairdryer because they likely need 1800W. Most nicer hotels have one on hand though.

For our trip, I just took the transformer and plugged a surge protector into it, then charged everything off the surge protector. Probably not the safest thing in the world, but it got the job done.

You can get converters and adapters CHEAP on Amazon.

Converter will be fine for most stuff. I use this Targus brand thing which has USA, uk, and Europe all in one.
Hair dryers are a different story. Those things can cause trouble. Your hotel may provide one or else I would honestly just recommend buying a cheap one. Ten euros at the most.

The adapters will be different for the UK versus northern Europe versus Southern Europe. The UK plug is a completely different monstrosity of a plug than the other two. I can't remember which is which, but one continental Europe plug has thicker prongs than the other (otherwise it's similar), so you can usually get away with the smaller in both places, though it will fit loosely in the larger plugs.

Also watch out for ground prongs in certain types of continental Europe plugs. The ground prong comes out of the plug itself and is right in the middle of the two power prongs. There is a hole for it in the plug-in from the device or appliance. Sometimes they are spring loaded and will push into the plug with a groundless adapter, sometimes it's fixed. I've been on trips where I had the groundless adapter that didn't have the hole for the ground prong and couldn't use it because it was the fixed variety.

I suggest you go to Radio Shack. They have a website they go to that shows pictures and descriptions of what is needed country by country (may be online somewhere from home too).

Thanks for the info. We have a layover in Heathrow and are staying at the Hotel Schloss Fuschl outside of Salzberg for a week and probably one night somewhere in Munich. Does that help with the prong/adapter options? Thanks again.

Just go to the Container Store and get some. They have them in the travel section.
