I know several people have been there and I have seen threads in the past.

Some tips for an inexpensive (by Cayman standards) trip.

Thanks,

Don't know if that is possible. Might try Sunshine Suites which is near the Ritz.

There are several of us on here that travel to GC. I think we could help if you would give more details like: what time of year you are going/single/couple/family/how long staying/what types of places you like to stay at/quiet/busy/on beach/what is inexpensive to you?

I think the cheapest decent place we found to stay was called "Treasure Island" or treasure something. Real nice and on the beach. Other than that, everything is expensive. A 2 piece chicken dinner from KFC will run you @ $15 probably!

Looking for a family place, 2 kids that are water rats.

Is VRBO a real solution??

Thanks,

bring as much food as you can. Try not to go out and eat for lunch. For dinner, there are quite a few places that are more kid friendly and less expensive.

I use vrbo all of the time. I found a GC condo there last year but ultimately all of the rental details were worked out thru the condo property mgr. Check out caymanvacations.com for some good info/maps. Look on North 7 mile beach. We like to stay there but you will need a car. There is a grocery store about 1 mile North so you can eat some meals in the condo. Look at Aqua Bay Club, Discovery Point, Christopher Columbus, & Anchorage. I hope you are going in the summer because that is when lodging rates drop. They also offer some specials like some nights free. We stayed at Aqua Bay Club & loved it! The North side is quieter & cheaper but close enough to everything for whenever you want to venture out. Rental cars are usually older models so just look for the best rate.

The best resort you can stay at while trying to save money is at the Reef Resort on the west end...that is...if you want to get away from the crowds.

Other than that, there are some cheap hotels and resorts on 7 mile beach. I think the Comfort Suites is one of the cheapest, and a place decent place to stay if you're on a budget.

Go to Tripadvisor.com and check it out.

I'd recommend finding a condo with a kitchen so that you can cook some of your meals. Also, if you snorkel, buy your snorkel mask and fins at Academy before you leave on your trip.

Summer of 2009 we pricelined a room at the Marriott on Seven Mile Beach for $92 a night. Gave the guy a tip when we arrived and he upgraded to the best room that wasn't being ocean front.

Kids wise it is very nice because they have artificial "reef balls" right off the beach... easy access for the kids to see a lot of fish. We, for the most part, chose to set up a little down the beach where not many people were (not more than 100yds).

We were very happy with our stay (10 nights).

We stayed at Christopher Columbus condos and loved it. We rented a car for the week, got groceries, ate out some.

If you aren't picky about when you go, in the rainy summer months they discount airfare and hotel rooms. It rained daily when we went in May but the rain only lasted 20 - 30 min.

We were there last week of May/first week of June & it rained one morn for 20 min. The weather was great all week! Our daughter is graduating from HS this year & we are taking her to Cayman or Cabo before she heads down to Aggieland!

Same for us... last week in July and early August and we only had one brief shower.

We are looking to going back summer 2012, right before our baby turns two. We absolutely love that island.

Texas Ag Mom -

Go to Cabo. That place is a blast and there is way more to do in Cabo than the Cayman Islands.

Thanks KW!You are right.
We have been to Cabo several times & we just took Mack there in July. She fell in love w/Cabo also. She wanted to move there within the the first few hours she was there! We love the beauty of Cayman & she has only been there once on a cruise stop when she was young. Some day I want to take her to Sting Ray City. It will probably boil down to flight schedules but as I write this I have a vision of us all on the sunset cruise dancing, drinking & having a blast! Cabo is calling!

my fav time of the day is when the late afternoon clouds come rolling in. It rains for about 15 minutes and then completely clears up. I'll plug my cigar, pull a chair down by the water and watch the sunset.

doesn't get any better or peaceful than that
