Normally the wife and I are pretty thrifty travelers. So we usually just break out the Lonely Planet and go to the budget section. However, we're going to be in Rome with my sisters family and my parents, so we will probably stay somewhere a little classier than we would pay for

Anyone have a recommendation for a nice hotel (less than maybe 200$ a night) near all the important sites? When I was in Rome before we stayed near the Piazza Navona which seemed to be a pretty sweet location, but I don't really know much about the neighborhoods.

I'm very much interested in this also. I'm definitely a saver, not a spender, but I'd like to spend a bit more than I usually would when in Rome in July. I'm also looking to see if anyone has any good suggestions. Thanks

I thought the Forum sucked, hotel-wise. Really small rooms, really overpriced. Location was decent. Central Rome is a nightmare to navigate though - if you get a car or a motorcycle/scooter, go ahead and get a GPS with the euro maps. Otherwise, you'll spend half your time trying to figure out where the **** you are and how to get where you are trying to go.

I stayed at both locations of the Daphne Inn Rome a few years back and was happy with both.

For a great hotel in central Rome, you can't go wrong with Albergo Del Senato. It's right next to the Pantheon and has a rooftop bar where you can have drinks and look out over the Pantheon. My wife and I have stayed here several times and we love it. It's going to be a little over your $200 limit, though.

Another great option that's a little more along your price range is Best Pantheon (I know, terrible name). Having said that, the name is the only bad part about the hotel. It's fantastic--has only a couple of rooms and the complimentary breakfast in the morning is incredible. The rooms are really clean and it's in a great location to use as your home base. I highly recommend this one as well.

These two hotels have totally different feels, but honestly, my wife and I have spent many nights at both and always enjoy our stay.

Here's my post from another thread a month of so ago on the Houston board...

quote:
My wife and I just booked rooms last night for a trip in May. We'll be staying at Hotel Golden prior to leaving on a cruise, and at Hotel Regno for 3 nights after the cruise is over. Both hotels were reasonably priced, centrally located, and got good reviews on Trip Advisor.

As a reference point, Hotel Golden is near the southeast corner of Villa Borghese, and Hotel Regno is about a quarter mile from the Trevi Fountain.

Both hotels fall within the price range you're looking for....I think they were both around $150-$180 USD/night.

Prior to a cruise summer 2008 we stayed at "The Center of Rome" Bed & Breakfast: Via Cola Di Rienzo 212. It was affordable and near the Vatican.

Hotel Nardizzi or Hotel Oceania on Via Firenze are both good choices. I have stayed at them both.

We (husband, daughter and I) stayed at the Hotel Condotti and loved it. Just a couple of blocks from the Spanish Steps and on a quiet side street. Has a roof top patio and we found a tiny shop to buy wine, cheese, beer, etc. and had our own, and much cheaper, happy hour each evening. Several small but good restaurants close. I'm jealous! Would love to go back again.

We stayed at Hotel Quirinale last May for 3 nights. It's located on Via Nazionale near the Roma Termini train station. Pretty cool place.

I have stayed here twice and last time was may 2012.

However, I would pick the place mentioned above next to the pantheon. It is very centrally located and I love the pantheon!

I also used Best Pantheon. Perfect location, huge breakfast brought to your room, and low prices. Walls are a pretty thin, though, so you'll be hearing your neighbors' television and/or sexual activities.
