I'm trying to figure out if I can get away with not checking a bag when I fly next week.

Would a shaving razor be allowed on the plane?

No problem with razors...

They are getting pretty lax... I forgot to pull out my clear bag of small liquids and they didn't care.

Razor-Type Blades - such as box cutters, utility knives, razor blades not in a cartridge, but excluding safety razors. Carry on: No Checked luggage: Yes

But you can't bring finger nail clippers-- that's just bizarre.

I can make a pretty good weapon out of even a disposable razor. I haven't figured out what I could do with fingernail clippers that would kill or incapcitate them except clip thier nails short and introduce some sort of bacteria so they die a month after the nail clipping.

Lastly, nail clippers. I can't even count the number of times I have heard or seen this... Totally not true. Way back when, 2001, pre-TSA, post 9-11, nail clippers were prohibited, probably an immediate reaction to the events of that day. However, when we came along, we changed the list, allowed nail clippers, but still get accused of being pro-long finger nail. Totally not true.
Trim those nails, in flight if you want, just be sure the passenger sitting next to you doesn't mind a flying hang nail.... Oh yeah, no blades on nail clippers either. Nail files on the other hand are OK.

this looks like a good place to profess my general hatred of the TSA.

i'm guessing that means double-edged razors are a no-go?

no. I interpret Pro Sandy's post to mean that safety razors ARE allowed.

but I think you are taking a serious chance by relying on a TSA agent to actually know what a safety razor is.

even if it's not in a cartridge?

Well again I interpret this to mean you can have a safety razor, but I think it is really unclear if your safety razor can have a blade in it... since they make it a point of saying 'excluding safety razors' following the other comment I think they mean you can have a blade loaded in it but who knows... and there's a good chance your TSA agent doesn't have clue and will confiscate it and arrest you just because he can.
