Just looking for suggestions of cool bars and restaurants that one might not think of (ie- not the typical bourbon st. spots)

You know the local spots! I'm surprised! But those are definitely some very good places. You live down there or what?

Lucy's is pretty good. Nice for an inexpensive burger and brews.

Other suggestions:
Dos Jefes - Nice variety and kind of a college bar.

Saint Bar and Lounge - (Very interesting out of the way place. Total dive. Cash only.)

Circle Bar - Looks like an abandoned house on Lee Circle. Cash only but beer is REALLY cheap! They usually have local talent play. Dive.

Ryan's Irish Bar - In the French Quarter but mostly locals go there. On Decatur near Canal.

The Columns Hotel Bar - Pretty cool hotel on St. Charles in Uptown.

Gloria's on the north edge of the quarter is my fav. especialy if you like brass.

CRM - I used to live there, but moved to Houston 1.5 years ago. I go back whenever I get the chance and Goldmine is always on my to-do list! That, and Rock n' Sake, are my two favorite places in New Orleans...and of course all the CC's.

What?!?!?!?!?! New Orleans has something to offer other than the French Quarter?

My wife is from NOLA (we'll be there next weekend, yay me!).

The Goldmine Saloon is her favorite 'locals' bar in the quarter.

Port of Call on Esplanade - good call!
