Place d' Arms is nice and relatively inexpensive.
Use priceline. We stayed at the Sheraton right near Bourbon on Canal for $75 a night.

W on Poydras or Monteleone one block south of Bourbon!
Big fan of the W.

Inn on Bourbon if you want to be on Bourbon St. If you don't mind being about a block off Bourbon, can't ever go wrong with the Bourbon Orleans!

Another vote for the Inn on Bourbon. Right in the middle of it all.
Stay away from the Sheraton and other hotels on Canal. Have to walk a couple of blocks to get to the Quarter and deal with all the trash and beggars.
