A while back I saw a thread regarding winter trips to Yellowstone. My wife, son and I are talking about spending next Christmas there. We have fly fished there several times and are pretty familiar with the park.

Can anyone speak to lodging in the park vs. in West Yellowstone, Gardiner or Cooke City. The last time we were there we stayed in Cooke City and enjoyed it. I understand that the road from Mammoth to Cooke City is the only one open to vehicles in the winter. We would probably leave SA on 12/23. We would like to spend a couple of days doing the snow coach tours, a day doing a snowmobile tour and maybe another day doing something else.

Any info on lodging, tour companies, etc would be appreciated.
Thanks

don't know if you are going to be going out of Jackson at all but we used Goosewing Outfitters for snowmobiles and they do the snowcoaches too. As far as I know the park is only open to tours, not just the public.

We used the goosewing when i went as well. They are a great outfit and I highly recommend them. Our original plan was to spend a few nights going hut to hut on snowmobiles in Yellowstone before heading to their cabins in GTNF. Lack of snow turned that into a day trip into Yellowstone followed by day trips out from their cabins in GTNF. Give them a call and they can probably help you figure out a good itinerary.

If you do not do this soon, the new president may not allow you to have fun there anymore

Moose is correct...do it fast.
I have always...well, just about always used West Yellowstone Tour and Travel. Lodging is adequate. Warm and clean. That's about all you can say about that part of the country anyhow. But, I like the peaceful nature of the town and prefer the West Entrance to the park because you also have access to Galitin nat. Forrest where you can do some real snowmobiling.
The park is very restrictive now with Rangers on your back every moment and you must have a guide. You don't really need one cause the park is pretty much just a big circle..but, be that as it may.
West Yellowstone is probably a bit cheaper, esp than coming out of Jackson. Used Flagg Ranch years ago at the South entrance, which was OK. I think it is still used as entry point by Jackson companies. And of course, jackson is pretty neet in it's own right and has a few excellant lodgings.
Inside the Park lodging is pretty neet. Little cabins or a big lodge. I've stayed in the cabins in winter and it was verrry...very much fun.
I think an outside concern now manages inside the Park (well, has for years). I bleive you will find them through the US Park Service site for Yellowstone.
I think the West Yellowstone Tour and Travel told me last time I was there that they could also arrange it.
Do it...MOST FUN YOU WILL EVER HAVE WITH YOUR CLOTHES ON.
