I am planning on taking a trip between Christmas and New Year to Omaha to see my parents. The girlfriend and I are wanting to take a trip to KC for a couple of days while we are there. Neither of us have ever been to KC.

What are see must visit attractions, restuarants, music, arts, and museums? I want to try to catch the Boulevard Brewing tour and I hope that the Plaza Lights are still going. I think I read something about a water garden too.

TIA

If you're at the WWI memorial, you may as well drop in to Union Station and Crown Center as well. Do BBQ at the original Arthur Bryant's and I'd recommend Jack's Stack as well. The steamboat Arabia Museum is pretty cool, and it has an interesting farmers market around it.

There's not really anything in Kansas City that I would call "can't miss" though. Beyond the above, it's kind of a matter of taste. What type of things do you enjoy? Bar scene, family oriented, religious, etc?

Good point, patty. There is a Cabela's in a KC suburb, my son-in-law would count that as a religious pilgrimage.

There is also a farm and ranch museum in Bonner Springs (not open in winter) I enjoyed it, but it'd be a yawner for folks not into old machinery nd/or farm history.

Oklahoma Joe's is the best.

Besides eating some BBQ, you can gamble in the casinos. I enjoyed Argoyle (or something like that) casino.

Guys I appreciate all the info and advice. We will plan the trip and certainly take all those into consideration.

I am into all of the things mentioned. Def want to try some KC BBQ. Love baseball so will have to look at the Negro League Museum. Gf loves Christmas lights and shopping (surprise surprise) so I am sure we will look at the place around the Plaza. I saw something about a sunken steamboat that is now a museum that peeks my interest.

I love texags. You can find all kinds of great info out. Thanks again folks. Gig em!

Justus Drug Store, yes that is the name of the restaurant, for unreal food. Its up in Smithville I believe. Its expensive but some of the best food you will ever have.

I'm disappointed in myself to say that I never went to see the Negro Leagues museum. I was always interested but just never got around to it. If you're into jazz, there's some nice places around Vine, not far from the original Arthur Bryant's. I respectfully disagree on Jack's Stack versus Oklahoma Joe's, but Oklahoma Joe's is good too. I think it's a solid third (huge drop to fourth), but it's also pretty out of the way to get to and from if you're only in town for a short time. Just to emphasize something above, if you have kids Union Station is hard to pass up. They've got a pretty cool kids' area there. I was never into shopping or the arts, so I for the most part stayed away from the Plaza and things like the Nelson-Atkins art museum. Some people love it though. There's another history walking area through Loose Park near the Plaza, but there's not a whole lot to it - nice park though. Chiefs fans are nuts as far as NFL fans go, though maybe not so much now that they've been down a few years. The whole Legends area out by the Speedway has lots to do: Cabela's, minor league baseball, a dinosaur restaurant for kids, a good number of solid restaurants, and I always enjoyed Nebraska Furniture Mart. That place is insanely huge and will provoke you to jealousy if you ever go shopping for furniture elsewhere in the future.

I can't really speak much to the bar scene. Westport would kind of be their Northgate meets Sixth Street area at night but isn't much of anything during days or weekday nights. The Plaza has several higher end places, though not a lot of activity.

On the religious side, the Unitarian church is based out of Unity Village a little east of town. You've got an off shoot of the Mormon church that broke off on their way to Salt Lake city based out of Independence - complete with their own temple. It was open for tours for a while, but that was a ways back now. There's a fairly major modern charismatic movement in the southeast corner of town. Depending on how you view it as to whether it belongs here, the Freemasons have at least one dedicated cemetery and a couple pretty interesting buildings, but there's not much to them beyond a quick drive by.

There is the American Jazz Museum right next to the Negro League Musesum if you're into Jazz. I think they have deals where you can get tickets to both for a discount. Both are great!

jack's stack was some of the worst barbecue i've ever had.

WW1 museuem is definitely cool. right next to it is the KC federal reserve. it's free and a fun 30 minutes or so to visit. you can see the huhe vaults with all the moeny inside. you also get a free bag of shredded paper money on your way out. boulevard brewery is also a fun visit.

the best food we had was actually a tapas place in town. i think it was la bodega. it's practically under the freeway. the pizza at waldo pizza was also very good.

i also got to go to the top of city hall. they don't advertise it, but you can go up to the top and see the view. i was alone at the time, and they sent this young girl security guard that was probably in her early 20's to escort me to make sure i didn't get crazy or something. it was just me and her up there. i took a bunch of pictures and then went back down. tell the kind of surly ladies working at the main desk you'd like to go up to the observation deck. not sure if they do this in the winter, however.

also, the train station is a very cool thing to check out, since KC used to be a big transportation center.

The sunken steamboat you mentioned is the "Arabia Steamboat Museum"

My wife and I went there a couple years ago between Christmas and New Years, so they should be open that week.

Across the street from Union Station is Crown Center. More shopping for your wife and there's an outdoor ice skating rink. The Hallmark Visitors Center has a quick/free tour. I wouldn't go out of my way for it, but kinda interesting if you're in the area.
Check out Pierponts in Union Station if you're looking for a nice dinner.

Stay somewhere in The Plaza. Eat at Jack Stack's on W. 22nd near downtown. There's one in The Plaza too, but it may not be as good. Their BBQ beans with burnt ends is memorable.
