As many of us "older" Ags remember, the KYLE FIELD sign on the outside of the west stands used to be lit at night. You could see it for quite a distance driving in from the Snook or Caldwell. It is a real sight that has been missing for the last several years due to $$$.

I e-mailed the athletic department to see if they would be willing to light it up on home game weekends. I was told it would take $150k just to repair the lights that aren't working. BB has said before that it is too expensive to keep lit.

Question: Would any of you donate to a fund through the 12th Man foundation just to support getting the sign fixed and to pay the bill to have it lit on game weekends (7 times a year)?

Let me know your thoughts b/c the issue has been forwarded to Miles Marks at 12th Man for consideration. I'd like to know how many of you think it is something you'd be willing to contribute to.

sure, as long as you can guarantee me that all of our home games will be night games.

What's ridiculous is that it shouldn't take a specific fund to keep the lights on. However, if I had some money, I'd donate.

I equate it to a fast food restaurant having the same problem. By looking at the building, everyone knows it's a Whataburger, and during the day they can read the Whataburger sign just fine. But you don't see the Whataburger leaving their sign unfixed, do you?

Well, yell practice obviously occurs at night before every home game, so there are 7 nights right there. There may only be a few night home games each year and nothing is guaranteed.

It could still be it up both Friday and Saturday nights (or T & T+1)when there are day games.

Hey, if there is no interest then there is no reason to seriously pursue it with 12th Man. The issue has been raised before and there appeared to be a desire to see it lit again.

150k sounds like a huge overestimate...

Most of the cost comes from hiring electricians that'll hang way up there and fix the damn things

You know .. if the birds were a problem .. why dont they just do whatever any major structure does and put up those little pointy metal wires all around where the birds like to roost, then they wont. Its really simple, it just sounds like athletics are lazy.

I have been to every home game since 99, and I dont recall the lights, it may have been before that time...but I think it would add some flair. With them leaving the lights on overnight before games (I know yell practice but I think they leave them on overnight) then it seems they have enough money to do that as well

I've always thought that it was a shame that the lights were left to fall into disrepair. I never understood it. It really was the "signature" face of Kyle Field and I thought it just looked awesome. I'm just not sure I get how a couple hundred flourescent lights or getting them repaired could cost so much. Seems like a local or Houston contractor could do for fractions of that cost, maybe with trade off incentives for advertising elsewhere such as somewhere else on campus or even near the base of Kyle. That's the kind of creativity to get things done that BB needs to have. I'm sure he's worked these angles but for anyone who's seen it at night it is impressive and worth pursuing.

I'm pretty sure that most companies that install stadium lighting, or perhaps scoreboards, have plenty of people that are willing and able to do that kind of work so having to "find an electrician willing to hang up there" really would not be a problem. I just think he doesn't want to do it and came up with that estimate out of his arse

The only way they get lit is if they add Kyle Field at HEB Stadium to it.

Would it not be cheaper and just as effective to purchase some large spot lights and shine them up at the lettering?

First we have a huge budget in athletics, so funding this should be no problem. However, if they were to need funding even as a recent grad I would help.

I remember when they installed the letters; they said that the lights could be seen for thirty miles. As someone said ealier, They were definitely visible as far as Caldwell.
