Well.....the ragin' cajuns just never gave up in that game......I remember how frustrating it was to watch....their QB just kept fighting back to get the job done and pull off their first ever win over a Division I program......the goal posts came down.....

Well ags.....tune in today to watch that same QB play for the NFC conference title game....for the Carolina Panthers.....

and his name is......Delhomme...

Brandon Shockley will be playing for the Colts if he gets over his injury.

It was the turnovers that killed us against USL, not their offense.

Don't forget current Colt Brandon Stokely who had 5 catches for 54 yards against us.

GAME RECAP
Britt Jackson's 30-yard interception return for a touchdown with
6:30 to play lifted Southwest Louisiana to a shocking 29-22
upset over number 25 Texas A&M, its first-ever victory over a
ranked opponent.

Jackson stepped in front of a pass thrown by Branndon Stewart on
the right sideline and raced into the end zone to give the
Ragin' Cajuns a 27-22 lead. Brandon Stokley caught the two-point
conversion pass from Jake Delhomme to extend the lead to seven
points.

Texas A&M (0-2), which committed eight turnovers, had one last
chance to tie, but Damon Mason made his second interception of
the game at his own 14 to preserve the victory. Fans stormed
the field as time expired.

"There's never been anything this sweet," said coach Nelson
Stokley, who is in his 11th season at Southwest Louisiana. "I've
been around a lot of big wins, but our heart was in this one,
the players, the coaches. I'm just so glad for this team and
program. I think a lot of kids who have been here the last 10
years certainly had a part in this, and I hope I they feel like
that."

Southwest Louisiana (1-1) scored three touchdowns on defense as
Mason ran back his first interception 42 yards for a score and
Charles Johnson had a 17-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown.

The Ragin' Cajuns have four defensive touchdowns this season
after failing to score defensively all last season. Jackson had
a 54-yard fumble return in a 55-21 loss to fourth-ranked Florida
two weeks ago.

The Ragin' Cajuns had lost their first two meetings with Texas
A&M by a combined 97-21 margin.

The Aggies, who were idle for two weeks after a 41-37 loss to
BYU in the Pigskin Classic, likely will have their 109-week run
of being ranked in either the Associated Press or the USA
Today/CNN poll come to an end. Texas A&M is 0-2 for the first
time since 1988, when it went 7-5.

D'Andre Hardeman staked the Aggies to a 7-0 lead with a one-yard
TD run 1:54 into the game. Delhomme was intercepted by Donovan
Greer on the first play from scrimmage and returned the ball to
the USL 12. Hardeman scored four plays later.

Mason tied the game just over four minutes later and Southwest
Louisiana took a 14-7 lead when Aggies running back Sirr Parker
fumbled on a hit by Randy Young and Johnson rumbled into the end
zone with the loose ball.

Texas A&M had two interceptions and two fumbles on four straight
possessions in the first quarter, leading to 14 points for the
Ragin' Cajuns. The Aggies also committed 15 penalties, one shy
of the school record set in 1986 and matched in 1990.

"We made too many mistakes to win the football game," Aggies
coach R.C. Slocum said. "We are a young football team. We just
have to go back to work and try to get better.

"I have to get USL credit. They took advantage of our mistakes
and did what it took to win the game."

Delhomme, who was 14-of-33 for 128 yards and an interception,
extended the lead to 21-7 with a one-yard pass to Cody Romero
with 9:58 left in the first half to cap a 17-play, 92-yard drive
that consumed almost 10 minutes.

"We really needed that break in the second quarter when the
offense had that long drive, and that was beautiful to watch,"
Stokley added. "Great execution, and you saw what kind of
offensive team we could be. We needed that break... we were
making a lot of things happen defensively, but we were also
spending a lot of time out there on the field."

The Aggies pulled within 21-13 on a 39-yard jaunt by Hardeman
with 2:46 left. Hardeman was stripped by Mason at the 2, but
recovered the loose ball in the end zone. Stewart scampered 46
yards to make it 21-19 but failed to convert a two-point pass.

Texas A&M took a 22-21 lead with 7:58 to go in the third quarter
on a 48-yard field goal by Kyle Bryant.

Stewart completed 16-of-33 passes for 181 yards, four
interceptions and no touchdowns. Texas A&M had 399 yards of
total offense, 213 on the ground. Hardeman added 80 yards on 11
carries.

"It was a tough game," said Stewart. "Practically nothing went
our way. I made some bad decisions. We took points off the
board we had. Those interceptions I had and the turnovers. I
think we pretty much just kind of hurt ourselves in that game."

i went to it. every coonass around me was saying delhomme was the real deal. at the time, i thought it was just one of those fluke games, but he has turned out to have the stuff. stewart didn't help much either. watching those fanatics march the post out of the fiels was the first and last time i have seen it in person. i still don't know what possesses people to do that crap, but then again when i saw the coverage of the michael jackson cout appearance friday, i was similarly perplexed at the mindset of some people.

To answer the original question, No, I don't believe anyone here remembers that particular game. As a matter of fact, I don't believe it ever happened. Probably an urban legend started on the internet.

Yeah, tell us how RC suited up and made the plays on those 6 turnovers... moronic statement. Outcoached that day? Maybe, but to credit a coach with a turnover, well what can I say, it defies logic...

Given the fact that I sat on the 50 yard line next to the USL student section and endured every moment of that embarrassment, all I can say is that was definately one of the lowest points in A&M football history. Delhomme was very good considering he was playing for a 3rd tier at best football university. I meet USL fans and grads often and they still talk about the win over us. What other football power goes to Lafyette to play. I do not see Texas going to Las Cruces, but they seem to play New Mexico state each year.

I guess the point I am trying to make is this: Away games against 3rd and 4th tier teams can do nothing but hurt you. Yea, if you walk out of there with a win, it might help you gain one or two recruits, but God forbid you lose. When we lost that game, we were less than one week and a year from the loss to Colorado at Boulder. We were headed toward number one with that win over CU, then it was all down hill to the Fiesta Bowl and National Champs. Within one year we had gone from the top of College Football to Cesspool on the Bayou.

We on this board can argue for hours about who did what, and whose fault it was, I can honestly say that the USL crowd never quit, and their players never quit. Our guys played there guts out,and lets just be glad there were no chat rooms or boards to complain on then, and take home the message: Play your Patsys at home.

don't forget that both Albert Connell and Keith Mitchell were suspended for the first half due to disciplinary reasons.

The Crew held USL to 228 total yards and basically 7 points. It was definitely the 8 turnovers and Stewart's stats were not that good either.

Up until about 3 years ago they still had bumper stickers celebrating that particular win hanging in the Old Tyme Grocery (good local po-boys next to their campus)... I think they finally re-painted and lost them though as I didn't see them on my last visit to Lafayette.

Growing up in Lake Charles and being a McNeese fan meant that going to that game in '96 was double hatred. I hated USL from the early days when they were still I-AA. And I hated 'em more because they were the opponents of the Ags.

Left IMMEDIATELY from the stadium...didn't stick around to see the posts start flying. Went as fast as I could back west. Stopped at a McD's on Amb Caffery on the way out of town. Full of maroon and very quiet.

I hate USL...er...ULaLa, whatever.

I was at that game.
Friends from LSU (who were open that
weekend) came to the game with me.

They said it was EXACTLY the reason LSU
didn't want to play in-state schools.
"Don't play 'em" and
"Keep'em down" is what they said.

Jake Delhomme didn't do squat that game.

The CoonAsses scored off of 4 of the 8 turnovers.

3 were returned directly for TD's.
The 4th turnover was returned to the 1 yard line.

I was there.... nightmares.

The best thing about it was watching some 650 lb guy on SWLa's sideline.

It was disgusting after watching the shootout we had with BYU. I thought for sure that even with the BYU loss, we finally had a quarterback. Then this and the rest of the season happens. The 96 as well as last season are those I would like to forget.

It was very bad and add to that I lived in Lafayette at the time and you still hear about that crap to this day.
