Since we settled for less than 50% from both NU and CU, the conference is already down $20 million in promised revenue, and $2 million revenue per remaining school in the Big XII.

Beebe sold Byrne et. al a bill of goods. We'll be lucky to clear $15 million per year in TV revenue under the new deal.

Too bad we couldn't get it in writing to have a valid case for a suit as a result of "breach of contract".

Well at least we won't have to play with the big boys for 17MM/year every year. The competition would be just too hard!

-Bill Byrne

PS - Plus, we would be on TV every week and I will not stand for that!!!

We'll be in the SEC once Beebe's hand is played and he doesn't have the money ponied up that he promised. Byrne will be retired, and whoever we put in there will be pro-SEC/TV/$$$.

no it was not dependent on that- it was commitment based on TV revenues and how they will be spit up in the future. With nu and cu gone, there will now be ten teams in the mix and thus more money to be split amongst those that are left

I don't believe they will come close to the TV money thats being talked about! And if they do...will the Ags get their payoff right off the top....Can't wait to see that happen. This whole thing is a joke!

contracts don't have to be in writing to be valid, just have to be 1)a promise(s) and 2) enforceable by law

I don't think there's anything we can do but except less money. We surely don't still have an offer from the SEC now that realignment is done. What other option do we have besides stay in the Big 12?

In order for a verbal contract to be legally binding, there are a number of other factors that must be met.

Don't most of you guys get it -- going to the SEC was a bluff all along (by A&M) to get more money from the Big 12. The bluff worked.

But as it turned out, Beebe called the bluff with monopoly money. He bluffed the bluffer.

Now the SEC boat has sailed (never really was a possibility anyway) and it's hello to the longhorn conference for a while.

Live and learn.

And things ain't so bad anyway.

There are so many hard-headed fools on this site. The $20 million is guaranteed. End of story. We'll get it. The departure settlements do not affect out bottom line at all; it affects the bottom lines of Tech, Baylor, Kansas, KSU, and Iowa State. They agreed to reduce their payouts to whatever was necessary to get us to $20 million.

Some other dude just posted that it was all up for discussion again.

I'm sure one of you is right.

Comments from Byrne initially indicated support for joining the PAC 16 conference... then an about-face occurred and A&M decided they really wanted to remain in the Big 12.

What part of this is wrong?

Pretty much all of it. Byrne did always favor joining the PAC 16 over going to the SEC. If he had had his way, then the PAC 16 would have happened. But this decision is not made by AD's. The regents decided they would rather join the SEC than the PAC 16. There was a firm offer of an offer. If we were willing to accept, the official offer was waiting.

Byrne and the regents said all along that the preference was to remain in the Big 12. They never wavered from that. Texas was the only school saying that there was no way to save the Big 12. When they realized that A&M would not follow them to the PAC 16, they had a change of heart. The change of heart from the sips, plus a willingness from the less influential Big 12 schools to guarantee A&M the $20 million, plus an indication from TV people that they would not reduce the tv payout, despite the loss of CU and NU, made the salvation of the Big 12 possible.

That's one interpretation, I guess. The version that seems to be gaining currency is that yes, UT was amenable to going to the PAC 16 and saw advantages to doing so if they could bring along the core players of the Big 12 south. A&M first agreed to this in principal, then backed away for some unknown reason, perhaps because it was not seen as a good cultural fit (whatever that means).

At that point, A&M then decided to stay with the known rather than the unknown and wanted to remain in the more familiar, cozier Big 12 (minus 2). Some have speculated that A&M really wanted to joing the SEC (there is no proof that this is true or that there was even a firm offer, only initial talk of such as the SEC had little reason to expand given that the PAC 16 was not going to be a reality).

At any rate, this was just a pipe dream as it was not politically expedient for A&M to wreck the Pac 16 and then the Big 12 (minus 2) and do harm to Tech and Baylor and others so not sure that was even a possibility anyway.

So it seems that ATM is just fine with the new, smaller Big 12 (minus 2). Perhaps the Gods are frowning on such shenanigans, who knows?

Loftin said an offer was a phone call away. Not sure what you want besides a public address from Slive to say, COME TO THE SEC.
haustin6
How long do you want to ignore this user?
People say a lot of things -- there is no proof that anything other than discussion of an offer occurred -- and there is no proof that the discussions ever came anywhere close to that (would involve all the SEC schools, etc.)

If you think one guy flew into College Station at a moment's notice to extend a formal offer to join the SEC without consulting the SEC schools, you must be smoking something. It was just preliminary discussion.

Loftin - Offer was a phone call away.
Haustin6 - No way, I know everything.

Gotta go with Loftin.

President Loftin: "Texas A&M is a proud member of the Big 12 Conference and will continue to be affiliated with the conference in the future. As Athletics Director Bill Byrne and I have stated on numerous occasions, our hope and desire was for the Big 12 to continue. We are committed to the Big 12 and its success today and in the future."

"There were also many other factors considered, including maintaining Texas A&M's strong foothold in the State of Texas and preserving our natural athletic rivalries, many of which date back more than 100 years," he said.
Whistling For Flies
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Loftin lied.
The SEC lied to Stallings.
The Big 12 schools promised us $20 million even though we had no SEC offer.
The SEC doesn't want one of the top athletic departments in the country, with a football stadium holding around 85,000, with a stellar academic reputation, that would open the Texas tv market to the SEC, that would open the Texas recruiting grounds to the SEC.
The multitude of internal reports verifying the SEC offer are all lies.

Really, dude. You're a huge idiot.
