If things go as they should, this year will be the last of the home and home series between us. It's all about revenue, but what isn't nowadays. Revenues will be minimum, approx 4 million per year per team. If we get a title sponsor it will be 5 million per year per team. That will be approx 6 million more every two years than you would normally get (you don't earn anything for road games in the conference).
This will upset some ticket holders as they paid good money to get prime seats for the marquee games of which Tech is the one (since UT is on the opposite schedule). But we need to look at what's good for the programs as a whole.
The added 12th game to our yearly schedule means ticket holders will get the same amount of home games as before. So in essence the athletic department doesn't owe you anything. The athletic department can't ask more money from ticket holders as they are maxed out. So this would add revenue without much effort.
In addition there are a bunch of fans with money that can't get good seats to the home games since they are sold out. This enables the other fans to get to see the team, and get decent seats.
UT/OU are ahead of the game. They already have this in place. UT is blowing away the conference in revenue made from football. This ia an effortless and big way to increase the budget.
Also, we are losing the recruiting wars very decisevely to UT. The exposure of Dallas will help immensely. Most of the nation doesn't know how good our games have been. If I remember correctly the 2002 game in Kyle wasn't even televised and that was the best game of all ages. The game in Lubbock the year after had to be moved to a 9pm start, to get TV playing time.
Let's face it Lubbock and College Station aren't media meccas. The move to Dallas will dramatically increase exposure.
This will upset the merchants in the respective cities and season ticket holders. However if they are true fans they will accept the move, knowing it is the way to better our programs.
If after 4 years it is not the same, then we go back to home and home.
To sum up
Reasons for the move:
1. Money - 20M total over 4 years (12M more than you now get.
2. Exposure - National recruiting and school visibility
3. Accomodate the other fans unable to see home games.
4. A new fun experience with fans on both sides of the stadium.
5. No more blowouts. Those hurt your program, immensely and take away from our games. Lubbock has a psychologic effect on your team. Neutral site won't.
Reasons against the move.
1. Selfish business owners in the respective communities.
2. Selfish season ticket holders who think the world revolves around them.
Basically the athletic programs are not asking for you to like the move. Just asking you to accept it.
Cheers!
