Why haven't they torn that building down already? They closed that place down when they built the Super Wal-Mart probably 10 years ago. I just thought that it was interesting that when they built the new center right next to it, they didn't even touch it.

Umm, because there is a Gold's Gym in it.

Because maybe they want to try to lease it for something.

Why would they hold out for so long though? They must want a rediculous amount for that space.

Wal-mart does not care if their old buildings are vacant.

I don't believe Wal Mart owns that building. I think Stalworth owns it. Could be mistaken though.

Email this guy if you really want to know.

Gold's is in part of the space of the big hallway by Walmart and of the arcade, plus some other areas(maybe a bit of the theatre area?), but doestn't actually go into the Walmart building.

MonkeyWards was where the produce section and the side parking for HEB is.

I'm not going to bet money on this, but I seem to remember hearing that it would cost too much to bring the building up to standard. If I remember correctly, it's going to be used for storage.

That might be the ugliest storage building I've ever seen.

828,

Bring the building up to standards?? That is a joke right?? Who ever told you that, either was very ignorant or was blowing smoke up your tail pipe.

Montgomery Wards was where the drive and left side of HEB is when facing it...it went to about the customer service counter or so. There was a theater in the old Walmart building if I recall correctly...didn't ever do much, but there was a sign up for it. Gold's was BESIDE the old WalMart when the rebuild started and is still beside it, albeit in a the newer portion of the building, not the same spot.

Sorry, but that's just not right... Not that it is of any benefit to me that I went to that crappy mall hundreds of times, aside from knowing where the old and new locations of things are.
Manor East Three was open the entire time Walmart was there(and even a few years after Walmart moved). They never shared the same space. By the way, for many years ME3's largest theater was the nicest in town, and the Schulman-owned theater did just fine selling tickets in its heyday of the 80's.

Where you said Monkey Wards was is where Eckerd's, (before they built the free standing building across the street), the main entrance, etc., were. I'm sure the customer service counter of HEB was in the footprint of Montgomery Wards, but it didn't go east much past the self service lanes, if at all. There was also a pet store, a sporting goods store, and maybe one or two others(at one time or another) between the main entrance to the mall and the beginning of Wards. All of this section was torn down.

Gold's was where Craft's Etc. was, facing the parking lot that is still in back of HEB. The old Gold's area(which was completely torn down) is probably about where the milk and bread is in HEB.

The new Gold's is actually in part of the old mall, of course with massive renovations.

I am embarrassed that I know this stuff, but sadly, I notice crap like that.

This is what it was like, as I recall it. I do know that Wards is correct.

Good find.

(I read the ramblings below to myself and realize it is extremely anal retentive, but I just can't help myself, sorry.)

Yup, Wards is right. What you show as Eckerd is too large. You can see three vents(or something on the roof), two close together that probably are right over Eckerd. There was a video store, facing Villa Maria(that went out of biz a few years after Hasting's opened) and a Kids Cuts type place(inside, facing the entry hall) between Eckerd and the main mall entrance hall. To the west of Eckerd I remember one tenent as being a jewelery store(that was one of the first things to close as I recall), one a sporting goods store, and finally a pet store before a smaller "mall" entrance.

The modern Hastings has the same footprint, aside from about 100 linear feet added to the east, and comes pretty close to touching the old Wards service area.

It is hard to tell from the image if the hallway I mentioned was kept and remodeled for Gold's or torn down and a new section built. I don't think that part was ever knocked down, but I may be wrong. Could you find a current image to see? The hall I am talking about follows the east blue line of what you have marked Eckerd south until it hits Walmart, missing the east line you have for Gold's by 20 feet or so.

I was too picky about your description of Gold's. A sane person could clearly understand that the old location was beside the old Walmart. I took you more literally and thought you meant RIGHT beside, which, the new location actually is.

You can see Manor East 3 on the image as the browner portion of the roof north of Walmart.

(By the way, north, east, south and west are relative. In my descriptions, assume the front of the mall faces north, which it doesn't because of the quirky layout of most of our town. It looks like your satellite image is aligned true north-south.)

I haven't been to a Theatre Company production since the new Gold's opened. They performed in the old large theater when I went, but it looks like Gold's might have taken over that space. For those that have been to recent shows, and are old enough to remember Manor East Three, which area do they perform in now?

The Theater Company is still in the old theater. They've redone the walls in there and have all new seating (nice seats, too).

Some of you old timers may remember that Kroger was once in that area with the white roof next to Hastings.

I saw the old Kroger in an article I found online, but I'm too young to remember it.

looking at that picture the Hastings building WAS the Kroger...that's Montgomery Wards over beside it.

Cool old photos... I was just a little tyke when the Kroger was there, but it looks like it may have have been where Hastings was before the remodel. I remember the entrance to the old Kroger still being there to the right of Hastings before the Tejas Center renovations. Maybe the part with the white roof was added later.
