Tips for Helping a Found Pet – Updated 7.12.13

Identifying owners
This is sometimes difficult because microchip and license data bases are not kept current by owners. Use of the internet to locate new telephone numbers, addresses, etc. can be helpful.

ID Tag:
No brainer, if information is current.

Microchip:
Have the pet scanned for a microchip. All of the local vets and the Shelter have microchip scanners, and will more than happy to check a pet for a microchip. If a weekend call Banfields @ Petsmart, 979.260.3171, for hours. If there is a microchip tag call to obtain contact information. If vet cannot obtain information call microchip service. These are the three most common in BCS

Home Again http://public.homeagain.com 1-888-466-3242
AVID www.avidplc.com 1-800-652-9977
AKC www.akccar.org 1-800-252-7894

County License
If licensed in Brazos County the pet has a big advantage: 10 days instead of 3 for impound to locate owners; 24/7 Lost and Found number Call: 979.775.6094 + the owners are in luck too: reduced impound fees and avoid possible $500 citation.

Rabies/Vet tag
Call the Vet’s office with the tag number. They can give you contact info or call the owners with your contact info.

Publicizing the Foundling
Even if you have to turn the animal in to a shelter, please take time to get the word out regarding it’s plight. Your ad or post can say it is in the shelter or have them contact you for details. Also, so that you can be certain the owners are truly the pet’s folks, do not publicize all information. Be able to ask for specifically identifying information.

In cases that you cannot apprehend the animal call Animal Control, numbers below. It can be of great value to post sightings of animals that are clearly lost and not caught.

Post signs at intersections within a 2 mile area of where pet was found. In addition, post signs at grocery stores, community centers, pet stores, veterinary offices, churches and apartment complex laundromats. If possible have photo on the signs and fliers.

File found pet reports
Aggieland Humane Society, Bryan Animal Center and notify Animal Control Officers.

**If you are not able to keep it, please take to your animal facility or call Animal Control Officers to pick it up. That is where many will look for their lost pets.

Ask neighbors, letter carriers and delivery people if they recognize the pet. Give them a copy of your flier with contact info and photo. Some neighborhoods have email listings that can be used to spread the word.

Contact veterinary clinics in your area to see if they recognize the animal.

Online Resources: Post information about the foundling online. Include complete description, details of how, when, where pet was found, contact information to get in touch with you, a photo if possible. Keep posting updated with sightings, news, concerns, etc.

I have an 80 pound dog that FREAKS when it thunders, when he hears gunshots/fireworks, or when a truck backfires. Usually someone is home to let him inside, where he's still a big, slobbery, nervous dog, just not so frantic.

No one was home when a brief but bad thunderstorm hit late last week. He freaked and even tried to dig out of the back yard by two gates...which proves his state of mind during a storm b/c there's a built-in door for him to get thru to the garage when he needs to. He uses it daily.

My dog ran off and made it about a mile from the house before a very kind guy named Eric befriended him, took him into his own backyard and called the number on 1) the personal dog tag (dog's name, our name, our phone number) and getting no answer called 2) our vet's number on the red county dog tag (which BTW was the only reason he figured our panicked, foamy-mouthed dog wasn't rabid). The vet had my cell phone number, called me and a few minutes later I very gratefully picked up a dog that was very happy to see 'Mom'.

An imbedded chip is a great backup in case your pet's collar gets lost. But it's much easier for the finder of your pet to read a tag and make a phone call.

IMHO every dog should have a tag with his/her name, your name and phone number and also have the county tag clearly displayed. Make is as easy as possible for someone to return your pet to you.

Thank you, Eric, for rescuing my dog!!!!!!!!!!!

Here, here for Eric, your pup's angel.

This post and Tips for Finding a Lost Pet were the result of Tailgate88's post regarding findtoto.com PLUS our reuniting a lost dog Saturday morning. It seems they find us frequently.

Her tags were ALL out of date:
Called the vet in Ottawa Canada - contact information all old.
Called the engraved contact into on other tag - all out of date.
Deciphered the worn off sharpie note on the ID tag, looked in the neighborhood directory, called and went by the house.
Eventually Lucky's mom came by and saw signs we'd posted around the neighborhood.

There are a ton of kids in my neighborhood who are always outside playing. One thing I quickly learned when trying to find a lost dog's owner, is that the kids know everything! I usually take the lost dog with me around the neighborhood and ask people if they recognize the dog. Adults never know and often don't want to be bothered. Those kids see, hear and know everything though. Ask them.

If there's a tag on the collar saying there's a chip, you can also try www.petmicrochiplookup.org They search all national databases, so it may save a call- and if it's not registered, it'll give you phone numbers to call.

Great tips on what to do when you find a stray animal. I think the best thing to do here is contact the animal shelter or animal control. You don't know if the animal has had their shots yet.

Note that the Brazos Animal Shelter is now out on Leonard Rd (between Hwy 47 and FM 2818) and open on the weekend but not Mondays (and they have been closing home football Saturdays). 2207 Finfesther is now the Bryan Animal Care Center (shelter).

I am in middle of project. If you will post the updated information I will gladly edit into OP of both lost and found threads. Just won't have time for at least a few more days, if not next week. Sorry.

If you find a lost pet or a stray, please consider checking some of the sites that are helping families reunite with pets lost during the wildfires in September. There are still a couple hundred missing pets from the Austin/Bastrop and Houston areas. We have a Facebook page Lost and Found Pets From Texas Wildfires and a website www.wildfirepetrescue.com that is dedicated to helping these families. We are still celebrating reunions!
Even though BCS seems far away, it is actually not far at all for a dog to travel. Also, if you find a dog along the highway aren't you more likely to bring it to your local shelter?
Please visit our sites, share the information, like our Facebook page, and help these families. It would be the best holiday gift for them to find their beloved pets. Thank you!

When find a cat, check if it has been ear tipped - about 3/8" of tip of one ear removed. Thst is the mark that a feral/stray/free-roaming cat has been fixed.

For ear-tipped cats, check microchip info with Brazos Feral Cat Allies 690-9530 info@catfriends.org http://catfriends.org or BCS Spay 393-0043 BCSSpayDay@gmail.com http://BCSSpay.org as they are usually who got cats fixed when ear tipped.

If find a cat that has not been fixed yet and cannot locate the owners, BCS Spay can help you get the cat spayed/neutered if live in Brazos County. Easier to find a new home for them if that has been done or makes it easier to decide to keep.

We are a group of volunteers helping to reunite lost and found pets in central Texas. We began helping during the recent wildfires but have continued our efforts, particularly in Austin, Bastrop, north of Houston, and now the Brazos Valley. Facebook is a great way of communicating this information because as admins, we actively check this site and crosspost to other pages or sources. Plus you can easily add updates and pictures. Please share our page! Thank you. You can contact us directly at Texaspetslostandfound@gmail.com

TLIAC, for some reason, texags and mybcs links don't work if they start with "https". The link you posted will work if it starts with "http", so you might edit it to make it work that way.

Recently found a little kitty which had to be taken to animal control.

As it turned out, someone that we know that works there contacted us a few days later saying that the kitten had been fixed, had all the shots and everything but was still looking for a home.

Right now she's sitting right next to me and quite happy with her new house! great info here btw, kudos to this post!

Another thing to check is your local Animal rescue shelter most of them have a website that lists lost or found pets and they usually will post a picture so that it's not necessary to actually go to the shelter you should be able to check on line

Not wanting at all to be argumentative, but any rescue or shelter organization getting photos posted to the website depends on a great deal of variables. Just a few of these are whether they are very busy, low on help and/or volunteers. Also, sometimes, in the rush of things, animals are simply missed in the photo-taking process.

While the internet has become a very useful tool, I would never encourage someone who is missing a loved animal to rely only upon phone calls to rescue organizations or visits to their websites.
