There are plenty of fine dining places in town, but there's also The Republic Steakhouse among those.

I have not been to The Republic or Veritas, and I have heard that both are excellent. I have been to Christopher's many, many times and they have some of the best filets I've had even compared to many upscale restaurants in bigger cities.

No steak is worth $60 (Christopher's), unless its rolled in gold plakes.

The Republic is outstanding. It's a bit pricier, but the atmosphere and service are excellent! Reservations are a must and please help them maintain their decorum by not wearing jeans, t-shirts or gimme caps. I spent about $45 for an excellent steak, ample vegetables, a great salad, good bread, and tea. The meal was very satisfying.

Veritas is a beautifully appointed restaurant. The service is excellent. However, the menu is extremely pricey for the quantity of the food. I spent $45 for a teeny entree, a sparse salad, a small roll, water and a shared dessert. I came away hungry for a meal.

Pam, I don't think I've ever seen a steak on Christopher's menu for $60. If you get an appetizer, steak (filet), drinks and desert, a couple can get out of Christopher's for right around $100. And in my opinion, the atmosphere, food and experience is worth it, but I can only afford to go like once a year when I'm paying my own bill.

Doe’s Eat Place is outstanding. Not as pricy as Christopher’s or Republic. The atmosphere is not as nice but the service is good and friendly. Those Sweet Potato Fries are to kill for and the Gumbo is great. Their small filet is over 2 inches thick and only about $20. You can wear your jeans and cap or your suit and tie both will already be there. I left so full I could hardly walk but I ate everything. The couple that was with us shared the porterhouse and they got out under $60 for both of them with an appetizer. Those Fried Mushrooms were no prebreaded stuff, they were gggggoooooddddd!!!!!

Last year we took a friend after he got his ring and he got some kind of discount, he had his sticker still on and the manager came around asked to see his ring and gave him a discount. I don’t remember how much. You will need reservations the place was full of Aggies that just got their rings.

I have been to the Doe’s in Fayetteville and Bentonville, AR. and the one here in Bryan. They are based off the original in Miss. that is in an old house that was a store and bar. The one we have here is very nice compared to those three locations.

Cinch, what I mean is that a person cannot go to Christophers and purchase a single steak dinner, drink, etc. with tip and escape for less than that.

I ate at Doe's the week that it opened here and was not impressed. It took a solid hour to get our meal and at that they were out of all the smaller steaks so we ended up ordering a 3.5lb steak the we ate half of. Our waitress was very graciuos and we got free soup & appetizers because of the wait.

It took us a solid 2 hours to get our meal and get out of the place. The steak was good, not fantastic. I've cooked better on my grill a la casa.

My boys say Doe's Eat Place is the best and Doe's was ranked 3rd best steak in America by Bon Appetit. They won't eat steak anywhere else now.

spelling correction

That was over two years ago, if what you say is true they would not still be here.

Let me guess, you where one of the people that voted Texas "I am from Indiana" Road House and Beefmasters as the "Best of the Brazos Valley". How sad was that.

Did you guys hear the Fox guys talk about Doe's during the Fresno State game????

There's no hope for me. If I want to go out for a steak I'll head straight for Feed Barn and leave happy with cash untouched in my pocket. My yuppie cred is shot.

Doe's Eat Place in Mississippi, not in Bryan, TX.

Heh. I feel the same way about J. Cody's.

To answer the original question, I like the filet at Christopher's and Republic is nice.

There a many eataries that I like in B/CS, Doe's simply was not impressive enough on first visit to validate a return trip. If someone ELSE was picking up the tab and it was on a non-busy evening, no prob.

Those that have made my list are Cafe Capri, Square One, Zarape's, Cenare, Fratello's Pizza Co., T. Jin's, Junek's BBQ and Koppe Bridge; plus I'm sure there are some that I'm forgetting at the moment.

And no-I did not vote for Roadhouse or Beefmasters as the best steakhouse is B/CS. Although Beefmasters does have a mighty fine CFS.

Just as a side note, I just checked my ring receipt to be sure but ring day is Nov. 16 this semester. I had to reorder mine since it went missing about 5 years ago and the ring office told me that they will be passing out rings for former students starting at 8 am on the 16th and for current students starting at noon that same day.

You say that like it is a bad thing. Name another restaurant in BCS that comes with that kind of press. They weren't grouped with Outback or TRH, they were listed with Peter Luger in Brooklyn, NY and Cut with someone named Wolfgang Puck as the chef. Did you read the article? And we have one right here in Bryan, TX!!!

Can you name another restaurant that is in the Brazos valley that has been talked about not just once but twice by the FSN crew during a live national broadcast? The first time they just went on and on about the place. They were getting on the old guy for waiting until that day to come to town and wasn't there to eat. Only one I can remember is back in the day they talked about Tom's BBQ and the Aggie special all the time but I don't remember another one being taked about like that since Tom's.

Yes, MS, but same chain, same recipes, same guidelines. We are lucky to have them here; it's an outstanding fit for downtown Bryan with good food and market equitable prices.

Now I'll agree, without screaming, LOL, that Roadhouse has the best ribs in B/CS for sure, but I would never order a steak there.

Good steaks are all about the quality of the beef. Everybody here seems to use plain ol select or choice. That said, there is kind of a sleeper suggestion in town. Cafe Eccell has really great steaks. They claim it's certified angus. I don't know if it is or not, but they're damn good.

I ate at Doe's last night. Very tasty. I think I enjoyed it more then the Republic. It won't help for the Nov. Ring Day, but the new Cafe Ecell Steak House should be open by early next year.

Had a steak at Fish Daddy's the other night that was pretty darn good. I'd go back for it.

Never been to Doe's but whenever I'm downtown that place looks quite empty. As for kudos given during a football game I've heard Rudy's mentioned a few times.

I enjoyed the Republic when I went there. Christophers will always be good. Does is tasty too. I've heard good things about the Bell Ranch Steakhouse in the Hilton but have not been there myself.

Any of the above will be good meals. There is really not anywhere in town that is a FINE steakhouse. At least, no black tie restaurants.

Three sure bets for FINE DINING ambiance, service and cuisine, including excellent steaks:

Maddens, downtown: http://www.pmaddens.com/
I am amazed that Madden's has not been mentioned.

Christopher's World Grille, Booneville Road: http://www.christophersworldgrille.com/

Republic 1836, University Drive: http://www.therepublic1836.com/

The websites reflect the truth of many visits.

Doe's Eat Place
Went there a while back, too pricey for what you get. While the food was good it was not great. I spent $44 on a 2lb steak plate (can't remember which steaks they have priced by the lb) anyway while it was good it wasn't great. Wife got some shrimp/seafood type plate that was the size of a one person appetizer for around $22. All in all our bill was $100 for two adults and two kids meals with one appetizer. Mind you no dessert or drinks (other than tea)either.

For the very best steaks, you need to drive 45 minutes to Royer's in Round Top. Save room for some pie, though.

Man, I miss Royers in CS...

When we go out for something that may include fine steak, we're usually looking for a night out, some ambience and some kind of experience. For that reason we haven't visited Doe's or Feed Barn or some of the other casual restaurants. My feeling is if we're going to blow $30 or 40 each we may as well blow $50 and go to a really nice place, too.

My faves, in order:
The Republic
Maddens
Veritas
Cafe Eccel
Christopher's

Got a heads up from real estate developer in downtown Bryan today that said Doe's is closing. You might have a back-up plan handy. I'd pick Texas Roadhouse IMHO

That sucks if true. Even though I've not had a steak there, I hate to see a business struggle who's spent significant time and money helping to revitalize an area like downtown Bryan. Hopefully the rumor is untrue.
