I'm far from an expert on this style of rifle. For my purposes I think the CMMG Bargain Bin is a good option.

http://cmmginc.secure-mall.com/shop/?shop=1&cat=33&

Rifle = $550
Hand Select Option = $20
5 30rd Magazines = $50
Shipping = $15
My local FFL charge = $50
Total = $685

These all look to have a flat-top upper receiver which as far as I can tell does not have a rear site. Am I just not seeing where the rear site is or does the flat top mean that I have to buy a rear site or an optic?

Also, is $50 the going rate for an FFL transfer or should I shop around for less?

Below are pics of one of the bargain bin rifles after received by a buyer.

Thanks.

$50 is too much for a transfer - U can get $25 if you look around.

And yea - many flat tops do not have a rear sight. It's flat in order to mount an optic usually - and, many people buy a folding rear sight...

Yes, it's called a BUIS or you can get an optic of some kind.

You can find cheaper.

Texas FFL list

Do you think you need a hand selected option?
They all should function the same. If the $$ amount is agreeable with you, buy more mags or save for a buis.

If you don't think you will put optics on it is $100 really the cheapest you can go for iron sites?

As a sidenote, I picked up one of the CMMG rifles. People are saying lots of good things on ar15 and xdtalk (the two boards I go to).

Welcome to the club, my first was a Rock River Entry Tactical A3 w/EOTech sights and I thought I would be satisfied with one AR, however I now also own a Bushmaster Varminter with a Leupold scope. Its addicting.

Champion's transfer fee was $25

Burdett & Sons will transfer for $15. Champion will try to charge most people 25 + 10% of what they could have sold the gun for if it is something they could have got for you.

Burdett told me $25 - And, I did a transfer at Burdett 2 months ago, it was $25.

Champion will only transfer something the don't sell or can't get. And, a friend of mine told me that they charge a % of the gun on top of the $25 fee, but I can't personally confirm that.

It was a while back that I asked they about the price (Burdett) so I'm sure you're right. As far as Champion yeah it's 10%.

Which BUIS would y'all recommend? My purpose for this rifle will be a truck/trunk gun that I can toss around, take hog hunting, plink with, etc. and not worry about scratching/damaging. Therefore the rear site needs to be rugged. I also probably wouldn't be shooting beyond 100 yards most of the time and I can't see a 16" barrell bargain bin rifle as a serious tack driver anyway.

Loan Star Pawn will FFL transfer for about $22. They are on Westheimer near HWY 6. I've had 2 guns transferred there with no issues whatsoever.

How quick is target acquisition with that Larue sight as compared with others. After perusing the websites listed above they all look to be the same design/style but I definitely do not want to struggle with a small aperture peep sight while trying to acquire a moving target. The only ARs I've shot had scopes or red dot setups so maybe I need to visit a store and check out the bui sights myself.

what's your budget?

All AR-15 BUIS are based on the A2 aperture. They are made to work with the flattop uppers and provide the correct sight picture. So the Larue is going to be the same in that aspect as all the others.

The difference comes in how rugged they are. Some are crap, some are built like tanks (the Larue).

No real budget but I don't plan on putting a lot of $ into this rifle. I just want something rugged and reliable to use while I get accustomed to the AR system.

Most likely this will suffice for a year or so at which point I'd probably purchase a higher end rifle with 20" chrome lined barrell, quality optics, etc. so that I can have a true tack driver and get the most of the .223's ballistics.
