I'm interested in the community pheasanthunts in places like Nazareth and Easter -- I'm a journalist in North Carolina, and learned about these while in the Panhandle last year writing a story on playa conservation. Can anyone tell me how these community hunts work? Sounds like a great way that hunters are giving back to their communities.

I'm not familiar with those exact hunts, but my town used to put on one. The kiwanias club would get farmers to basically donate their land for hunters which would pay the Kiwanias. They would also rent the expo center and cook a huge breakfast for the hunters.

I don't think the majority of these guys are hunters giving back. They are normal citizens who are giving back to the betterment of their city.

I have been on one in morse. Basically a farmer donates land, and they get a farmer to take you and tell you where to go. This was for the lion's club. They also feed you breakfast and lunch. It was a great deal.

Most small texas panhandle towns do something similar.

The Nazareth Lions Club puts it on. I understand it is pretty good. Hart puts one on also. I know that it is good because I know the land they hunt on.

Good luck.

Thanks for this info on the community hunts. I've made contact with some of the local folks. Sounds like a fascinating event.

We're always looking for intriguing hunting and fishing stories, so drop me a private email if ever you come across something particularly interesting: T. Edward Nickens, editor-at-large, Field & Stream, enickens@nc.rr.com

Thanks again....

Quick question... do you have to be from the community to go on a community hunt? :-)

Take a look at Dumas. They used to have one to benefit the 4-H clubs. The C of C might be able to help. I know the Lions club had a great early breakfast.

Not that I am aware of. You just have to pay the fee and they'll set you up. They do it to bring money into the community.

My younger brother has a large group of hunters who come to Oslo every year. There's no charge, but they limit the group size to keep it manageable.

The night before the season, they throw a pretty good party in his shop where they filmed part of a Taste of America show there with him and my old high school teacher cooking pheasant a couple of years ago. Last year, they had the best bratwurst and saurkraut I've ever eaten. After all that, I'm not sure how they wake up the next morning.

One of our panhandle brothers should organize a big TexAgs community hunt.

I'd go.

I might be interested considering we no longer live on a farm which we used to hunt on.
