Sangria Recipe Needed

I have Googled but I want a recipe that you know is good from experience. I want one with a little kick to it. I know sometimes they are closely guarded family secrets.

Let's see if a rookie can actually contribute something of value. This recipie is on a larger scale, but it is well tested and comes from a bar I visited in Spain.

12 Bottles Spanish Red Wine (I always use Sangre de Toro)
1 Bottle (1.75l) Brandy
1 Can (about 2 cups) Superfine Sugar
1 Gallon Orange Juice
Sliced Apples, Peaches, Oranges, Lemons and Limes.

Mix the brandy and sugar together until sugar is dissolved. Add in the rest of the ingredients. We usually make this in an igloo cooler so it is easy to access from the spout. You need to make it one day in advance of your event as it takes a while to mellow out and let the fruit flavors mix in. The quantities of fruit added is up to you. For a batch this size we usually add 4 of 5 of each, sliced with the skin or peel on.

Hope this helps.

3. drank it down.

I have seen the same in spain, less the Brandy. take a 1/4 of the wine you will use and replace the brandy. Key is mixing the sugar first with a little bit of liquid (wine syrup).

Brandy will give it a biger kick.

I love the Carlos And Rossi Sangria the best. You can find it in a huge gallon bottle for about $11 bucks at walmart and heb. I add a little bit of sprite to it, and a bunch of fruit like strawberries, peaches, cherries, oranges, limes and lemons..On mothers day, we actually used pieces of orange and lemon zest and it carried the same amount of flavor.

I like to buy the Sangria, mix in a little vodka and sprite over ice. Good shizzle.

Another twist for folks who want a bit lighter finish: when you serve, cut it with chilled champagne. My wife likes the sparkle.

Swamp,

When served, pour sangria 2-1 into club soda and ice. Or the champaign sounds good too. Never tried it like that.

how much champaign to sangia?

Try this batch without cutting it with Champaigne or anything else. We make three batches every year for a Tapas party we host and it is aways gone before the night is over. It also adds an much more exciting element to your night as people (especially the females) tend to be in a great state of mind after a few glasses.

Im gonna give yours a go. We will be having an end to the school year party and I was wanting something different than we usually do. We have done margaritas or pink panty pull-downs the last few years. I have some friends (an older couple) that have an awesome sangria recipe. They wont share . I think yours might be the trick. Drinkable with a kick.

How can you not think about adding vodka? It's like butter - it goes with everything.

I've never had complaints about this one:
1 box cheap wine (grenache or similar)
1 can cheap grape juice (frozen concentrate)
1 can cheap apple juice (frozen concentrate)
1 can Rum (using the juice container as a measure)
Mix in a big pitcher or punch bowl
Garnish with slices of apples, oranges, or other citrus (really for looks only).

Let me know how it turns out. At our parties they rave about this (plus it gets the ladies all liquored up....and I think you KNOW what I mean!)

BTHOtu here in Austin dammit!

bobag87 ... Your recipe is very close to one I picked up from friends in Spain 40 years ago ... and it is still the greatest. We mix the brandy, citrus and sugar the day before and let it mellow overnight in the fridge before adding the wine. (We have sometime added Club Soda as an extender occasionally with good results.)

Good contribution for a rookie! (j/k)

I have surfed these boards for three years without posting. The Sangria thread enticed me to actually post. i stake my not so valuable rookie repuation on this recipie. I think you will find it a good time.

Swamp,

If the Sangria turns out as good as your homebrew, then I am sure it will be a hit.

Bobag,

What size/kind of cooler do you recommend? Will a water cooler work or are you talking about a regular ice chest - if you are talking about a regulare ice chest can you buy a spigot for those at Academy or something.

Also should this be served cold or can you just serve it over ice?

thanks, as I plan on trying this out for a large group in a couple of weeks.

We use the dreaded orange water coolers like the football team uses. I think igloo makes them. We put packs in zip lock bags to keep it cold overnight as we use fresh squeezed orange juice and don't want that to go bad in warm weather. Of course, I tell my wife there is enough alcohol in there that the juice should be fine, but she is very concerned about this issue so I let her keep changing the ice packs out. We just serve it over ice and do not worry how cold it is when the party rolls around.

Let me know if either of you try this. I am interested in how it turns out for you. We did it last weekend and it was a hit once again.

I plan on trying it next Friday for our annual graduation party. Wifey wants to do 5 gallons of Margaritas like we usually do. She is afraid we will make a big batch and no one will like it. I am planning on making a small test batch this weekend as we are going to a medium sized get together. I will post up about how it turns out.

Start with some wine
Get some apples and brandy and sugar just fine
Old friends always show up on time
That's why you add Sparkling Burgandy wine

In Texas on a Saturday Night, Everclear is added to the wine sometime.

bobag,

Just went and priced everything...will a five gallon water cooler be big enough. I calculated the mixture to be roughly 3.8 gallons before the sugar and fruit. The reason I ask is because the nice 10 gallon igloo coolers are $45 bucks at Academy...so if I can get away with the 5 gal, I'd rather go that route.

not to hijack, but if you want to get a party goind take a watermelon and inject everclear, let sit in fridge for atleast three days. cut in half, chunk it up and leave in melon.

be prepared, crazy things will happen. stay away from the dark red veins, leave those pieces to the women that are easy on the eyes!
bobag87
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I appreciate the attempt to hijack as the watermelon can be lots of fun. Of course my wife tells me I am too old for such adventures. I am also quite fascinated by the "pink panty pulldowns" and may have to have a party just to try those. I will go out on a limb and say this recepie can hold its own against those as the drink is much stronger than wine, but no one has any clue. The females seem to be particularly susceptible to the Sangria.

As for the cooler size, you are smarter than me if you did the math. If it fits in a five gallon cooler, there is no reason why you could not make it in such. We use the igloo water coolers because they have a spout. However, if your cooler has a drain, I do not see a reason why it could not serve as a spout. Also, You can use a ladle to serve. We sometimes have to resort to this even in the igloos as the fruit will clog the spout.

My only critical advice is to make sure you let it sit overnight. If not, the Brandy is definitely a shocking element.

By the way Tree Hugger and Swamp, the Jerry Jeff lyrics are not going without great appreciation. I have had the song in my head all day.

The tacos, burritos, who knows how it usually goes.
